This is my third stay at this hotel, for which I’ve written a review before.
Pros:
as I said last time, the rooms have all the amenities you can think of, luxuriously decorated; beautiful deep-soaking bath tub , high-tech (well, may not be that high-tech) gadgets (e.g. Bose, blue-ray player, electronically controlled shades (once opend up, you can get panoramic view of the bund (if you choose the right room type, more on this later), which is nothing less than amazing. Great location, many shops – catering to different budget - & lots of restaurants in the mall next it and nearby.
Overall , rooms are superb.
Now the Cons (i.e. the service or lack of)
This could be one of the best hotels in the world. But the problems are the overall service level (or lack of ) It is simply NOT up to Ritz Carlton level standard, or not what you expected from such a high-end luxury hotel, which boasts the gold-standard of hospitality.
- First of all, the morning breakfast buffet was chaotic, at best.
Servers are so swamped to the point that they ignored my request for getting a spoon (one said you can go & look for yourself, ,another one said simply walked away to take care other supposedly more urgent matter after I made the same request ) . Some food was empty without being get refilled. In a word, it was a nightmare. Granted, it was Chinese Spring festival holidays, which means many tourists were in town. But this should be an excuse for a hotel like Ritz Carlton, shouldn’t they have anticipated & prepared for that?
- Slow check-in/check out
There’s only a very small front desk for check in/out on the 52nd floor ( if your rooms are club-level, there’s another check-in area on different level). The limited capacity to handle guests inevitably leads to lines, especially during this holiday seasons like this one. When I was checking out, the scene at the reception area was like buying a ticket at a Chinese train station ( if you have ever been to one in big City like Shanghai, you will know what I mean). I really don’t understand why they couldn’t have more check-ins done at the ground level, which would offer much more space, at least would ease the problem (i.e. the long lines) if not preventing it from happening at all.
- Poor Service level/attitude. Just to give two examples. I booked Shanghai bund view room - a room type offers best view, which was the same type of room I stayed back in last July. But when I walked into the room, I found the view was not exactly what I expected, I called the service line , but was told that only suites (shanghai Bund type) offer that view. Sure, I did stay in a suite last time. But I was sure Shanghai bund view rooms -regardless if they’re suites or not – can have the same or similar view. Later on, from the front desk, It turned out that I was indeed correct. Look, if those rooms I’m asking for are not ready , or have been booked, ,that’s fine, but tell me so, don’t lie to me or tell me something that is NOT true. Also, on the night of my stay, I first asked for a Champaign bucket (which was promptly sent over to my room) before I realized I forgot to ask for Champaign glasses. When the lady with the glasses showed up, I can clearly tell she was very UNHAPPY about my oversight from her facial expression & tone. Again, this is what you called “gold standard of hospitality”? Hardly !
When I stayed in Hong Kong intercontinental hotel a few years ago, not only did it offer me the mesmerizing view, but most importantly their services - warm smile, eagerness to help , attention to detail, etc. – were what made them really stand out – from the moment you checked in. When I read the rave reviews about 5 hotels in Hong Kong(like Four seasons, Intercontinental, including, yes, Ritz Carlton), for instance, words frequently describing their services are immaculate, impeccable. Top notch Services are what make them unique, what make them great hotel, and what differentiate them – truly exceptional 5-star hotels – from mediocre 5 start hotels.
Look, this hotel could be so much better only if their services could be improved. What a shame!

I have had the good fortune of staying at this property twice. It is simply great! The rooms are spacious, modern and have great views of Shanghai. The Hotel lobby is located on the 52nd floor, which gives you an idea of the views. The service and eagerness of the staff is inspiring. The Flair roof top bar has an impressive view of the Bund and great food. It was a joy staying at this hotel and I can only but praise Ritz Carlton for what they have achieved with this property and team of staff! Will I be back? You bet!

Stayed here for two nights at the start of our China tour. Our standard room was very comfortable with everything needed for a pleasant stay. Staff were helpful and very patient when we had the inevitable language difficulties. Afternoon Tea was a delight as we 'people watched' in the lounge. The Hotel is in a good area for some Designer shopping but watch the traffic! Dinner and breakfast were both excellent. We chose to have the 'Buffet' at dinner and were delighted with the choice of different foods available and the excellent quality.

We arrived late, the welcome was very friendly. I was shown to my room, which was perfect. On a very high floor. Incredible shower. Fantastic view. Bar at the very top worth a visit!
The shopping mal in the building is the most luxurious I ever visited

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the river directly

Excellent hotel.... Beautiful spacious room.... A bit glitzy for my taste.... But other than that its sublime.

I arrived very late but the Duty Manager made me most welcome, swift check-in, bags to the room quickly so no complaints there.

Quality breakfast.... Bacon made to order... Nice touch...awesome view over Shanghai skyline.

Friendly helpful staff who appear genuinely happy to help.

One of the best hotels I've stayed at in 2012.

Room Tip: Ask for view over the river

A superb hotel right in the middle of Pudong, so really convenient if you have meetings or are on business. The rooms are beautiful - very glitzy - but very spacious. Beautiful bathroom (and bizarre bath).

Wi-Fi free and very fast too.

Breakfast was also great and the staff overall seemed only too happy to help.

Was definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: All the rooms were high - you might want to ask for a view of the Pearl.
