Holiday Inn Express Sanlin Shanghai
Ranked #1,815 of 5,160 Hotels in Shanghai
Reviewed March 17, 2011

I use Holiday Inn in Nanjing very often and this was quite different and disappointing. However, I also use Ibis for it's low price and basic standards. Holiday Inn Express, Sanlin is comparable to the Ibis chain. So if you're on a tight travel budget, I think it's worth the compromise.

Highlights-
- Breakfast was terrible.
- Bathroom design for sharing a room.
- Front desk courtesy, helpfulness
- Location from SH city center.
- Location from subway.
- No iron so I'm sure other details are missing
- Linens and towels are low grade
+ Location has plenty of food options around but mostly fast food, WalMart also.
+ Bed is softer than the normal Chinese hotels.
+ Ipod dock alarm clock.
+ Elevator has security system with your room key.
+ Good WiFi in the rooms
+ Good TV channel selections

Details-
If you are trying to sight-see in SH, I strongly do not suggest this hotel. It's far removed from the city center and in the 'burbs. I used this location because it's a short drive to our office location. Breakfast is included but seriously bad. It's all traditional Chinese foods except toast and coffee, which I'm happy to eat but everything was of poor quality- overcooked or too cold. Things looked clean but very sloppy and there's not enough seating no matter what time you get to the dining area. Front desk was rude to my Chinese coworker and does not know enough English if you're limited. Big ah-ha, there's not an iron to be borrowed in the hotel. Who doesn't have at least 1 iron for community use?? It's also an indication when you see the shower and the bathroom have those refillable soap dispensers like you see in the gym showers or public restrooms' sinks. I will give kudos to the bed and pillow. It was surprisingly soft and so I slept through the night. Also they had an ipod dock, which was a huge surprise given everything else. Last bad design is their bathroom. There's one door that swings to close the whole bathroom or to served as the shower door. That's cool for a single bed room but we were staying in a 2 double bed room... if you want 2 beds, wouldn't you think privacy is also expected regarding the bathroom area? Wow, come on. Anyhow, it's a better value than the Da Muzhi Ibis that I used to use but don't expect anywhere close to the usual China Holiday Inn experience.

I stayed here for two nights in Jan. 2011, one night at a time.
Contrary to a previous review, the staff spoke a okay English, was friendly and tried to help where they could.
The hotel is located about 30 minutes by Taxi from the airport (costs 130RMB for a ride), and it is about 20-30 minutes by Taxi from downtown.
The breakfast is very basic. As it seems to be custom in China, the lobby, breakfast room and hall ways are not heated in winter. So take a jacket when you go for breakfast.
In China smoking is accepted nearly everywhere, therefore even a non smoking room might smell like smoke.

First problem none of the front desk staff know how to speak english. Second problem we were given a smoking room when we requested a no smoking room and the unfriendly staff didn't want us to change our room when their housekeeping person could clearly smell how bad the room was. Third problem was that the new room was full of stray hairs. The fourth problem is the location of hotel is terrible. Its very very very far from anywhere. I think this hotel was built for future expansion of shanghai. The fifth problem was they would charge us 100 yuan deposit to borrow an umbrella. This is ridiculous considering it costs 10 yuan for an umbrella here. And they already took a 1200 yuan deposit for the rooms. Sixth problem was when we called to ask for additional toiletries and they couldn't understand us, instead of trying to find out our problem, they hung up on us!!! All these problems was compounded by an unhelpful manager who also spoke no english!!!

Good points:
(1) Generally clean as it is quite new
(2) Reception is quick to change door (card) keys which fail daily

Poor points:
(1) Housekeeping never made my bed for 3 days
(2) Check-in and check-out were time-consuming, there was one staff handling everyone, where two others in the reception were doing nothing.
(3) Very messy breakfast
(4) Location is difficult to find for taxi drivers, really remote

Pretty new hotel, but far from the city center. Check-in was a pain as many people were demanding the attention of the poor clerk. You have to be aggressive -- there seemed to be no concept of first come, first serve. The people who got what they wanted first just went up and demanded it from the clerk. Took me a while to figure that out as one by one people came and diverted the clerk's attention away from me. The rooms were nice though. Thin walls; I could hear the people talking next door -- in the middle of the night.
