Description: Mr & Mrs Bund – Modern Eatery by Paul Pairet. A modern French eatery. Relaxed chic atmosphere, heritage Bund location.Mr & Mrs Bund is French, in the manner of Chef Paul Pairet: born, traveled, and globally stamped. Contemporary, but not stuffy. Relaxed, without sacrificing an ounce of chic. We serve populist French favorites, through Pairet's looking glass. Service is family-style, recast for a modern table, and the wine list includes 32 wines by the glass. We riff on classics, we dish up comfort cuisine, and we serve it just like you would Sunday night dinner – sharing-style, and with plenty for seconds. It's a straightforward menu that takes simple French classics to start, and then let you add and play. Mash-ups: not just for potatoes and DJs anymore. Hours: Dinner: 5:30pm to 10:30pm (Monday to Sunday); Late Night Supper: 11:00pm to 2:00am (Thursday to Saturday)Accolades: No.43 in 2013 & No. 76 in 2014 by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants & 51-100 list; No.7 in 2013 & No.11 in 2014 by Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants

The food and service here are excellent. We were going to have the three course menu, but after two large courses we canceled dessert. The chicken breast was probably the best I have ever eaten. The atmosphere is very hip with a view from the sixth floor in Bund #18 overlooking the Pudong skyscrapers. When we canceled dessert, the manager insisted that we share a house specialty gratis, which was the Lemon and Lemon Tart. It would be a gross understatement to say that this dessert was terrific - it was one of the best we have ever eaten. A whole lemon skin has been filled with wonderful flavors. The skin itself had been cooked for 72 hours and was just great.

The cost for the two of us was about $75-80 including beer and a great big bargain for the quality and portions we had.

Very few places offer great ambience and super food. Mr and Mrs Bund is one such place.

Awesome food and awesome experience. Bund View from the restaurant gallery is amazing. Staff is courteous and restaurant serves amazing fresh cuisine.

We tried some chicken dishes and these were the best I have ever eaten.

Bread spread is also very good and appealing. Staff and service are very good as well.

I should have reviewed this before-- am on a roll this morning with my second visit to Shanghai in 1 year. Food is above average (perhaps 8.5 out of 10) and you can get nearly anything you want prepared any way you want it. That's a good thing. However, the music is a big energetic so that's good if you don't want to have an active conversation with your dining partners. If you do-- then be prepared. Very trendy/hip. Dance club upstairs. And you can have dinner through the small hours (I think until 3am or so-- no joke)...albeit a smaller menu of course. Did not rush back this time around-- for same price went to both of Jean Georges restaurants which were WONDERFUL and the music complemented the atmosphere as opposed to competing with it and the food like M&M Bund. Hope this helps.

I’ve heard a lot about this place during previous visits to Shanghai, and this time was determined to try it out. Surfing around Tripadvisor looking for excellent restaurants in Shanghai is very misleading, especially with crappy Din Tai Fung dumpling venues making it into the top 10 - but Mr & Mrs Bund deserves every accolade it has; it’s super-chic right from the discombobulating wooden entry door (am I in the right place?) to the red velvet curtains, chandeliers, and Adidas-sneaker wearing wait staff (see footnote on menu; ‘shoes by Adidas’).

It’s big but not too big; with a cosy split level setup that has both the highly sought after window tables (think front-row theater stalls) and other entry level tables (think stands) in a narrow but uncrowded space, and then a slightly elevated area (think gallery) with leather-clad booths and an Alice in Wonderland style communal table that also houses the inviting bar area. The initial impression on walking in here is that it is just super super cool, and somewhat theatrical – and it is.

We ordered cocktails, which were excellently made and presented – in American servings (rather than European or Asian), which is refreshing for us Martini-lovers. The menu is interestingly laid out by meat type, and you’ll find the wine list on an iPad. We were three, and all our appetizers were fabulous – my friend ordered the main course scallops, which were the perfect combination of being large, perfectly seared, and utterly delicious. The green pea soup served in a thermos was also sensational, as was my slice of foie gras. But the best was yet to come…

For mains we made the assumption that the warning ‘for 2 people’ was overstated – after all we were Westerners in an Asian restaurant, and the photo of the short rib I fancied didn’t look too big (far from it!)…but in this case, assumption proved to be the mother of all gluttony. My teriyaki short-rib arrived looking like it had been carved from a Brontosaurus – with an estimated 500g of perfectly cooked meat on it - and my friends lamb rack was carved into 6-8 thick, meaty, juicy slabs, with even the ‘normal’ 250g tenderloin needing a mid-meal pause to regroup for a final assault.

All the peripherals that accompanied our meals were excellent – the crusty ‘horned’ bread, sauces, spinach, and in particular the arugula and truffle salad (which was magic).

Of course the wine selection here is terrific, and you would expect it to be – so if you don’t mind paying a premium then you can indulge yourself in a way that is impossible even in many of the 5-star hotels which carry limited selections of generally rubbish wine. At 1,800RMB (roughly $300USD) you can enjoy a 2009 Penfolds St Henri Shiraz, or a South African Meerlust Rubicon for half that – and there are many other jewels in the chest…

For dessert we tried the pomelo with crackling powder (yes it was deliciously strange), and crème bruleee – both of which were exceptional, as was the coffee, post dinner liqueurs and more cocktails.

Mr & Mrs Bund is best for those times when you’re looking for an event, rather than just dinner. If you’ve paid $300-$400 a head for great dining experiences before then you’ve definitely paid more elsewhere and not experienced anything nearly as exquisite as this place…It lends itself to lingering and enjoying, it’s hypnotic and intoxicating, and my hands-down best dining experience in Shanghai.

Make it top of your list.

We ate at Mr & Mrs Bund with friends of ours who live in Shanghai. We had booked it as our friends had recently married and we wanted to treat them to a night to remember. We were not disappointed. The restaurant has an amazing atmosphere is very funky and plays great music throughout the evening. It has wonderful views over the bund. We started with some bitter lemon martini's (we had several more later on as they are a stunning drink and I would encourage everyone to try them) and then chose our food. The menu is varied and has pictures of a lot of the dishes, I personally don't like this as it reminds me of the cafes in Spain catering for the Brits abroad (of which I am one before anyone complains) and the menus for a trendy place like this could do with an overhaul. We had some sharing starters to begin with and I had the Fillet Rossini for main course. The food and wine was excellent. What was unusual was that at 11pm when you ordered wine you got a 2nd bottle free. The waiting staff were very accommodating in allowing us to choose a wine before 11pm and letting us have it so we then got the free bottle. They also make a real fuss of you for special occasions. My suggestion is, if you are looking for great food, great atmosphere and just generally a great night in Shanghai then Mr & Mrs Bund is a must.
