The Peninsula Shanghai
Ranked #12 of 5,159 Hotels in Shanghai
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 11, 2013

The Peninsula is quite possibly the best hotel I've ever stayed in. The attention to detail, the staff, the location and the property itself are all outstanding.

Airport transfer:
They can arrange a pick up if you really want to splurge but honestly taxis are so cheap and plentiful that it's not really necessary. It's about a CNY60 fare from Hongqiao airport or CNY200 from Pudong airport.

Location:
On the Bund directly opposite the People's Heroes Monument and across the river from the Pearl Tower. There are many entrances but the main one is on a relatively quiet side street. It's about a 5-10 minute walk to the hustle and bustle of the main Nanjing shopping street but also easy to get across to Pudong and you are of course right on the Bund.

Room:
Exquisite art deco style room with a large sleeping and sitting area, a separate walk in closet and a large bathroom, all of which can be closed off from each other. They have quite literally thought of everything.

The bedroom/living area has complimentary fresh fruit, a Nespresso coffee machine, bottled water and free international calls. You can control everything from the lighting to the tv using the control panels on either side of the bed which is itself super comfortable. If you have the do not disturb sign on and they want to leave a message, they even send a fax to the machine in your room.

The closet has a valet box that the hotel staff can access from the hall so they leave your newspaper and dry cleaning there plus there's even a nail dryer.

The bathroom has double basins, a shower and a spa bath with mood lighting and music plus there's a tv.

Breakfast:
There's a menu for cooked options which includes western and local dishes. They're all prepared and presented really well and because it's cooked to order, the food hasn't been sitting around as it would if they had a hot buffet. There's also a small cold buffet with freshly baked goods, fruit, yogurt, cheese and cold meats.

The only minor complaint about our entire stay – and it really is a very small one – is that there is no cereal and if you're staying for more than a few days as we were, the selection of food available is perhaps a bit limited.

Dinner:
Very good quality food in the Chinese restaurant and great service.

There are of course other great hotels in Shanghai but in my mind, you won't find a better hotel than this.

Room Tip: The Bund view is the one you want but those rooms naturally cost more.

Great location, super food, and then the rooms..... The best appointed we've ever stayed in. Huge walkin closets, fantastic bathrooms, free international calling, automatic shades. The Westin and St. Regis are nice but they don't stack up with the Peninsula.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the Bund are more expensive. Worth the price.

From the moment we arrived our brief stay was in a word - heaven. Every aspect was just fantastic - our lead-in room was beyond what we expected - the spa setting in the bathroom which dimmed the lights and played music was the icing in the cake. Just amazing.

Stayed here for 4 nights with my wife over New Year's eve holiday. Location is great near the end of the Bund in Puxi. Being a Peninsula I did have alot of expectation for this hotel, it didn't disappoint. The service is impeccable and one of the very best in Shanghai - comparing to other high end hotels such as Park Hyatt, Ritz Carlton and Puli. Rooms are generous, with a walk-in closet and a large bathroom. One thing I particularly like is the lighting/ AV system of the room. It is easy to use and very clever. Slap your iPod on the dock and it automatically plays the music without a touch of the button...step into the bathroom and press "Spa" and the lighting automatically dims with relaxing tunes filling your ears. Outside temperature and humidity is displayed in the room and the walk-in closet as you prepare to change before going out... It is the most advanced and most integrated system I have experienced - I believe Peninsula is upgrading this for all their properties as they have the same thing in Tokyo. The Gym, pool and Spa were great. Had a massage there and the masseuse was excellent. Overall I am very pleased with my stay and I think the Pen has set a very high standard for all other luxury hotels in Shanghai.

This is a wonderful hotel. I'd definitely go back. We didn't "discover" the roof top bar until our last night - definitely grab a drink up there. The bar in the lobby was a bit too smokey for us, but that's China for you. There is a salon in the shops area - reasonably priced wash/blow dry for an expensive hotel in an expensive city.

We stayed in some beautiful places on our trip to China, but this hotel was the best. We even had a television to watch when we took a bath. The controls on the bedside tables were so cool. My favorite was when the alarm went off in the morning, the lights would slowly and softly come on in the room. All the amenities inside and outside the room were top notch. The food, the bar the view, the staff, all amazing. Be careful of having your laundry done, though, it is very expensive, but does not take away from this fabulous hotel.

We visited Sir Elly's today for brunch (family). We each ordered our mains following which the set menu appetizers were presented - smoked salmon on toasted brioche, ceasar salad, serrano ham with melon, artichoke veloute with truffle ravioli, risotto with scallop, and rigatoni. All were beautifully presented and and delicious. The soup with truffle oil / ravioli was incredibly rich for a non-truffle lover, however, the others enjoyed it. We were pretty full when the mains arrived. We chose lamb cutlet with gnocchi, confit duck leg with polenta, and short ribs. The lamb and ribs were wonderful, though the confit duck was disappointing - a touch dry. The assiette of desserts included chocolate torte, strawberry panna cotta, coffee brulee with fresh berries, and chocolate mousse - each one amazing in its own right. At 350RBM per person (or 545RMB for free flowing Moet & Chandon) I thought this was excelent value for near Michelin-star quality. Sir Elly's is very child-friendly, with a childrens menu (88RBM) offering good quality food - the "fish with rice" was a perfectly steamed fillet of sea bass served with pak choi and a timbale of boiled rice. And there's a kids play area with large bowls of sweets / fruit to keep the kids out of harms way and, more importantly, allowed you to eat your meal peacefully. Alternatively crayons and colouring in sheet available at your table. Overall, excellent experience, and happy to recommend and would definitely be returning. Note - our brunch is served throughout December, so future menus will probably be different.
