I completely agree with TreVal and feel compelled to share my experience. I booked this hotel for 3 days 2 nights for holiday based on the above average reviews and mainly due to the beautiful pictures with the artistic element of the room. The rooms are nothing like those presented in the pictures. It is very very misleading and bordering on cheating. It was really the worst ever hotel experience in my life. I left the hotel after 2 nights despite paying for 3 nights as it was really a lost cause. It is too expensive at over US$100 for this quality. I feel ripped off and you can get many good up to par hotels with this budget.

The hotel building itself is very old so it is very worn out and tired. There is a small miserable table which function as the reception/registration desk. Behind the table is a small side door which takes you to the cafe where you have your free breakfast. The design is weird to say the least. There is 1 small slow lift which takes you to your room. The rooms itself are big but the housekeeping is non-existant. The carpet in the living area is dusty and full of hair. There is no art or even a picture at all in the "art deco suite" that I got. I was shocked to see the totally open concept bathroom which does not have any kind of shield at all. From the hotel pictures, I expected al least some beads curtain to shield the bathroom area. But the "bathroom" at the corner is made up of 3 different free-standing components, the shower cubicle, bathtub and WC which are totally exposed for all to see. It is really cold in the winter and very embarassing to relief yourself in the open even it you're staying with your partner. I also got a room fronting the main road so it was very noisy, when i asked for a change, they said the hotel is full, could not sleep for 2 nights. As the room was huge, it is very cold luckily the heater above the bed was working so it was bearable. Other parts of the room i.e the living area and bathroom was really really cold. The worst was the old piping system which emitted loud rusty cranking noises when you switch on the tap/or someone above you does it. The noise just shocks you awake especially in the middle of the night and we complained to maintenance, whose solution was to off the main tap below the basin, which thankfully worked. But imagine everytime you need to use the tap, you need to kneel down the basin and switch on the main tap. The satelitte has been spoilt over a year now based on the past reviews so it showed they do not even bother to repair it at all. I was hoping that it was fixed during my stay but no such luck. Imagine having a big TV with no channels in the room, how boring can this be?? There is a DVD player so I tried asking if they have DVD for rental but no, they don't as well. Do they expect travellers to bring along DVDs on their trip?? So you end up bored to death in the room with no TV and radio. The only plus point was the bed was quite big and soft for China standard. And the free wifi was stable and strong.

Service is non-existant and the hotel seem very understaffed. There is only 1 staff on duty at the registration table on both days i were there. I asked to extra blanket on 1 night and they could only send it after 10.30pm when the maintenance staff comes in otherwise there's no one to man the counter. Not very helpful in answering your general questions as well about sightseeing spots or ways to travel to our intended destinations, i.e. mode of transport etc

The free breakfast thrown in was typical American brakfast with egg, toast, bacon or sausage with soggy potatoes. You get a coffee or tea to go with it served in the adjoining cafe. It was very basic and cannot be called tasty but did fill you up. The cafe is quite old and the ventilation is poor so the oil smell permeates the cafe and even the lobby, sticking to your clothes!

The location was quite good as it's 5 mins walk to the Hengshan subway. This subway line is very convenient as it takes you to the East Nanjing Road, Xintiandi (which is overhyped and overpriced) and Stadium area) However it is at the tailend of hengshan road so there are not many restaurant or bars around this area, if you want to stay around this area of the french concession try further up which is more happening.

Conclusion, please bewarned that you will be sorely dissapointed with this hotel if you expect to get what you see in the hotel pictures on its website/ other travel sites. You can really get much better places at a fraction of this price in Shanghai, if not you will end up regretting it!!

Room Tip: If you must, choose the courtyard facing room not the main road

A lovely room/suite with a huge bathroom at the Gallery Suites was my home for 2 weeks on a recent business trip to Shanghai. Not too expensive, quiet, very comfortable, fast internet. A huge desk made my work a pleasure. The front desk staff were a bit grumpy on occasion but that is my only beef. Lots of bars and restaurants nearby made an evening stroll a pleasure.

I travelled with a friend and stayed here for 2 nights in Oct. The hotel is located in the lovely Hengshan Rd area and it is a charming Art Deco heritage building originally designed by Turner & Palmer. Can't say that our room was particularly Art Decor although it was modern, very large and clean. There is a metro station about a 5 min walk away so connectivity is not a problem. There is also a pharmacy and conveniece store nearby. Be warned that the bathroom has no door separating it from the bedroom so this can be a problem for some. The venetian blinds on the bathroom windows were not working and it was a matter of artful navigation to get from the shower to the bedroom in order to avoid being detected by occupants in the opposite building. The toiletries provided by the hotel were a strange selection, like someone had collected them from various other hotels and put them together. The reception is 24 hrs and the staff speak good English.

Great boutique hotel in the French Concession - close to lines 1 and 7 on the metro and also plenty of nearby taxis to take you around the city at very little cost. Staff are very friendly, helpful and of international standard. The rooms are clean, spacious and every room has individual design touches that will make your stay in Shanghai that extra bit special. On the down side the TV channels are very limited (12), and have not been working correctly since before April 2011 when I last stayed - but with Shanghai on your door step why stay in to watch tv. The internet is also free - which is an extra bonus.

Room Tip: Look at options of upgrading to the larger suites - ask for either traditional Chinese design or mod...

This is an amazing boutique hotel in the heart of the French Concession. I stayed here for a week and have been recommending this place to all my friends. The beautiful area, its convenient location, the stylish decor matched with the conveniences you would expect from four or five star hotels, housed in a beautiful heritage building made this a great stay. All 39 rooms in this 'heritage architecture' building are 'suites', decorated in art deco or gallery style. Everything worked well in my large 'gallery' design room that was outfitted with a large French-style standalone bathtub, separate shower, a large, comfortable bed, a personal safe big enough to accommodate a bulky laptop, WIFI, etc. The only things missing were the international channels on satellite that was being 'repaired' then, and a fridge, but the hotel was good about keeping stuff for me in their fridge. All the places that I wanted to go to were within each reach either on foot or by the plenty of taxis plying the busy but still peaceful western end of Hengshan Road. I would definitely stay here again when I'm next in Shanghai.

Nice hotel that needs to hire more staff to manage the cleaning and ensure TV works.
1 TV station is just note enough especially during the rainy season. Breakfast is the same every day and there is not much variety besides American breakfast with eggs.
This hotel has great potential and prices are very reasonable for SHA. It is located in the most romantic street of SHA and its a pleasure to take a stroll to the subway.
I hope that Management will fix the TV soon,

I wouldn't say the location is the best - it's not really in the center, but not that far of it either. It's just ok location-wise.

The rooms though are nice and original; like you are in a Shanghai room in the 1930s. It made for a special weekend. I will be back.
