My family spent several hours walking around this amazing building, taking pictures, looking at shops (not many, but the few were interesting), going across the street to the design building with the cool, red, plexiglass stairway that went up several floors, and then returning to eat at Jardin de Jade on the third floor which had wonderful stir-fried green beens with pork sausage, great pan-dried dumplings, and great spareribs. The hong shao rou (fatty pork) and spring rolls were just okay, and the noodles were mamahuhu (so-so). I highly recommend this as a half-day activity in Shanghai.

I would highly recommend this for a visit, and sooner rather than later. Although apparently a protected building is hasn't stopped developers from turning this into a labyrinth and a building totally void of personality. Attempts to turn it into a shopping centre clearly failed looking at all the closed shops, as such it's a mixture of various entities that occupy just a small portion of the building. But taking that aside the architecture is incredible. Why there isn't a tourist shop (there was but it also closed) that could provide some background to what we find mystifies me.
I found it amusing that apparently this is popular location for newlyweds to come for photos, is a slaughterhouse an appropriate location for wedding photos? Maybe.

A former slaughterhouse. Almost looks deceiving from the outside, but once you enter the building, you'll be impressed by all the elements in the design, it's hard to imagine it was built for its utilitarian purpose back in the day...you can imagine the animals being herded on the pebbled paths from one level to the next (kinda sad, i know...). It's pouring with natural light with its open centre court design, just simply a very clever and unique design. It is a mixed use complex now with a couple of restaurants, offices and some quaint shops.

A very cool find. It was a nice walking distance from my hotel. Great to stumble upon it after exploring the neighborhood. Fascinating architecture and history. You don't see architecture like this every day. Explore all the nooks and crannies. They have a free guide to read get it before exploring.
