“Good hotel, didn't like the location.”
Reviewed September 12, 2012

As mentioned before, this hotel is now named the LongMen Hollyear Hotel. It is clean, the breakfast offers anything you wish in a large dining area and the staff is responsive to your needs: however, I would recommend something closer to the Bund. The neighborhood around the train station is rather barren in terms of shopping and restaurants. The restaurants that are there cater to the travelers from the train station. They are essentially fast food. There are also many small grocery stores. The neighborhood lacks any charm or historical value and isn't close to any attractions. You have to take a cab. Stay here if you are a business traveler, but not a tourist.

Room Tip: Higher floors have less street noise.

This property is now called the LongMen Hollyear Hotel. We stayed for two nights at the tail end of a tour of China. The hotel selection and booking was handled by our tour company.

Location
At the outer edge of central Shanghai, next to the train station but far from any attractions. If you're taking the train (not the airport magnet), this location could be for you, but otherwise it's an undesirable spot due to the distance from the main attractions in Shanghai. Fortunately taxis in Shanghai are very inexpensive; probably cost us around $5 USD for a 20-minute ride to the Yu Gardens bazaar.

Service
Very disappointing. The front desk did not have the ability to call outside the hotel. We asked them to make a dinner reservation for us both nights. The first night, a staff member thankfully used his personal mobile phone, but the next night we were refused.

Maid service was poor. The lobby bathroom was filthy, in contrast to all other hotels we stayed at in China. Toilet paper was not replaced in our room until we requested it. Drinking glasses that we had used in the room were not cleaned or replaced but instead just had water poured into them, apparently to dilute the remnants of our drinks from the previous night.

Room
Decent-sized, with a small sitting area near the entrance. Our room overlooked the train station, but being on the 19th floor we had no problems with noise. The bed was uncomfortably hard. This is something I've never complained about before now. In past hotel stays I've noticed that beds are hard, but never to the point where it bothered me. At this hotel it bothered me.

The hotel could be great. It gives hints of elegance. The room has crown molding on the ceiling, mahogany shelves, marble counters in the bathroom and beautiful furniture. That said the upkeep of the room is very poor as evienced by wallpaper starting to peel, the refrigerator had food and dirt encrusted in it, the carpets were warn with stains and cigarette burns and the ceiling had a large black mark on it. The room did not have toilet paper upon arrival. They came up very quickly and brought it when called.

On the positive side is that the hotel was a short walk from the train station. It is close to many restaurants and markets. The buffet has a good variety of Western and Eastern food. The staff is very friendly and responsive to the needs of the customer.

Our room overlooked the Shanghai train station, making train and taxi travel easy. Meals were excellent. Rooms were comfortable and well serviced. Never noticed road noise. Bed was "Chinese" firm. We'd come back.

I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights while on a group tour of China. My room was on the 19th floor, it was clean, pillow was ok, bed was horrible. Again 2nd time in China trip, I felt I was sleeping on a Box spring, and no matress.

Room was very big with lots of amenties, mini-bar, Electric kettle to make hot water for tea or coffee, clean towels, house shoes, bath robe, nice view from room.

Breakfast was decent, can't complain about that. Carpet was not the best, it looked like it hads not been cleaned in months.

Close to post-office, major train station to travel by train to other parts of the country, convenient store close by, and post-office. Not a 4 star hotel by US standards.

Room Tip: Single room are better with king size bed, stay on the 19th floor, less street noise and great view.

We stayed 2 nights at the end of a China tour and had another two nights added on before flying home. The room was large and clean, the bed as firm as the carpet but all the beds in China we experienced were like this. (it actually worked out well for our backs).

After two days we were independent travelers, the we realized how bad the location was. This is not an area you would want to walk around and there are no decent restaurants in the vicinity. Taxis are essential, and that's another story.

The staff at reception were, well, hopeless. Very poor level of English. The staff in the bar were just plain rude. The breakfasts we had over 4 mornings was just edible, focussing more on Chinese tastes than sticking a balance to match their clients.

I would never go back. I would never recommend.

I was on the 7th floor and the road noise was horrible but my bed was comfortable, my parents were on the 15th floor and it was quiet but the bed was the typical hard Chinese style. I don't think anyone in China uses carpet cleaners because all hotels had really dirty (so dirty they were discolored) carpets. The breakfast was medoicre at best. Everywhere we went in town was a long way away, not a great location. Great japanese noodle shop around the corner.
