I want to like this hotel as I've had good experience before in Taipei and I've faith in Taiwanese management and hospitality. However, this is Shanghai.

The room decor and hotel amenities were all ok. The location is not hard to find. You get the bund and river view although not the best angle.

The downside is the air conditioning was not working in the room. We reported about it almost everyday but nothing got fixed. There was a night when the response we got was that they forgot to turn on central aircon. Not so sure what that meant but there was still no a/c. Because we were out during the day and only return late in evening, we were too tired to deal with the problem. We slept with the windows opened on same nights when it was not bearable but didn't really sleep well as it was too noisy.

Had it not because of the faulty aircon I would rate it better.

This hotel gets full marks. The room is inmaculate, with intelligent room controls and a bathroom with really nice fittings. You can lie in the bath and watch tv, or jump into a rain shower in another stall. Having table/ seat together with the basin makes excellent sense... wash your face after you sit down and get make up off. Location is right on the bund. Service is impeccable, and breakfast is tasty. The business area feels like an intimate study, with pastries available around the clock. I will stay here again!

Our stay was wonderful. From the moment of check in when the front desk receptionist found my daughter and me the perfect room with a fabulous view of Pudong. The staff, in general, was always willing to assist in any way possible. Buffet breakfast was very fulfilling and tasty. Unlimited coffee, tea and treats throughout the day was a special treat. The room had all the amenities and was very clean and comfortable. The only downside was that the restaurant was on the pricey side when just a light lunch or dinner was desired.

After arriving in shanghai late at night and having a challenging time navigating our way to the hotel, we felt instantly relieved and impressed when we stepped into the warm candlelit hotel lobby. The hotel is beautifully decorated with particular attention paid to the smallest of details. Our room was understated elegance with a beautiful bathroom including a deep tub with TV and monsoon shower. The bed was incredibly comfortable and the rooms electrics including curtains, music (speakers in the bedroom and bathroom) and lighting was controlled via a main panel next to the bed. The staff were so accommodating, making reservations for dinner, letting us order room service in the restaurants outside of lunch hours and preparing a sandwich and juice for us on our departure because we would miss breakfast. The food is also of a very high quality, breakfast options were fresh and plentiful, the lunch options were diverse and tasty and afternoon tea of coffee and biscuits and small cakes were a welcome treat (although getting a teaspoon or stirrer can be a challenge). It is not the quietest of hotels with noise from the road, harbour and occasionally neighbouring rooms but this does not detract from an otherwise excellent stay. We would certainly recommend Les Suites Orient and hope we can stay with them again.

If you like modern and sleek design, you'll love this hotel. The rooms are absolutely beautiful and after 2 weeks using Chinese toilets….the bathroom here was heavenly. Yes, the toilets have a wash and dry option. On top of those types of niceties…its centrally located. Most beautiful and comfortable bed I've ever slept on. My husband and I made a video of the room layout because we want to redo our bedroom when we get back home just like it.

Room Tip: ask for a river view

The classic exterior hides a first class beautifully furnished hotel that we will return to in future. Genuinely helpful staff at all times at reception on the first floor with the ground floor for arrivals and departures. We had a 20th floor room (2005) with stunning views of the Pearl Tower, the Bund waterfront and the river that turned magical at night....a continual source of pleasure during our four day stay. In fact many a night we sat with a drink watching the changing scene as the sun went down. A huge comfortable bed and a wonderful adjoining bathroom with in-bath TV and all the luxuries of a first class hotel. In-room service was fast bringing excellent club sandwiches after we arrived from West Lake. Hotel dinner was private and excellent with many diverse choices from Thai to Cantonese to European. The in room fresh coffee machine, bar and frigo bar were used frequently and we sampled afternoon self-service tea with as many cakes as you can eat for a reasonable price. Breakfast (7-10) offered everything from eggs cooked to your taste, fresh squeezed juices, fresh made coffees, breads, cereals, Chinese and western style cooked food, yoghurts, and most of all fresh tropical fruits probably from Hainan island China. Staff are eager to book you cabs, advise on visits, book you tickets, offer your DVDs from the house selection (as UK DVDs did not function on their DVD player). A hotel we will return to. We booked a room for two with an on-line indication that you could not have an extra bed but they willingly provided one when our daughter decided to stay over (£50 a night). A great location for seeing Shanghai with easy cab rides to the French Concession, People's Square, Yuyuan gardens, Pearl tower, and to the Shanghai Brewery and the unique Green Tea for dinners out.

Room Tip: ROOM? Splash out on a Bund view room on the 20th-22nd floors. TAXIS? carry the hotel card for the re...
