“Art Deco near the People's Square”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 23, 2011

A beautiful building, stunningly restored. The rooms are large and well appointed - though we were inner facing and I doubt there are views - with great bathrooms. The staff could not be more helpful and were happy to help with bookings, writing destinations in Mandarin, answering queries. Good location for the museum, Nanjing Road and other likely destinations (French Concession, Bund, Xintiandi) not far and very cheap taxis. It's a shame the hotel doesn't have a buzz, though the cafe seemed lively.

Location is good, very close to Nanjing road and the underground station. Hotel was well decorated and service was attentive. Room was huge and so was the bathroom. However, the air conditioner in my room was too moderate and it felt freezing in the bathroom. I think this is not acceptable in a hotel in this category. The water pressure was another issue. The water volume was too low and it took ages to fill the huge bath tub.

Hope the above issue will be resolved and this will be a good value hotel.

My fiance and I stayed at the Langham at over new years for 5 nights and we fell in love with it.

For a Gen Y person it is probably strange to have a love of art deco but hey, the hotel just oozes class and sophistication but still has a great sense of its origins. Our room was beautifully decorated with a MASSIVE balcony looking out over my favourite building in Shanghai. Unfortunately it was too cold to really enjoy the balcony but oh well.

The staff are very helpful and speak great english. On new years eve the staff at the door stood in the street for us for quite some time trying to wave down a taxi (at least 15 minutes). We were also greeted every night at turn down service with a treat of some sort. On new years eve it was a wonderful tray of chocolates and a note wishing us a happy new year, other nights it was turkish delight or something else interesting.

Even a hand written note to give to a taxi driver telling them where to take us was written beautifully on gold fringed paper.

In a nut shell the Langham executes everything perfectly and with a sense of style that makes you feel like you have been whisked back to the 30's for a few nights of decadence. We will be back and we will definitely be bringing more people with us.

My only complaint is the lack of free high speed internet in the rooms. $20 a day for internet in such a standard of hotel is a bit of a let down and we probably would have spent over $100 US just to use the internet for work purposes

I stayed here for 3 nights and can not really fault the hotel at all. The room was large with a fantastic large bathroom which included a very deep bath with a TV above the bath. I also had 2 balconies - one in the bathroom and one in the main bedroom.
The room had fantastic 'freebies' such as all the toiletries you could want including scrubs & most toiletries. They also did free show shines and had umbrellas, slippers and robes for use.
the location is fantastic and is only a few minutes away from Nanjing street. There is also the Raffles Mall directly across the road which has lots of great restaurants (very cheap but look expensive!) and the Hershey Chocolate shop. Also about 5 mins away is the pick up and drop off pint for the Hop on Hop off tourist bus which is very convenient.
It took about 20 mins to walk to the Bunt River, so overall the location is amazing.
The breakfast is good and the hotel restaurant is also great. The only minor issues I had was ordering room service was difficult with the language barrier and I ordered lamb shanks off the menu which was meant to come with veges and mash but when it arrived i got just one single lamb shank on a plate and nothing else but I am sure this was just a miscommunication.
They also have DVD players in the room and you can get free DVD's from reception but so are very old - Home Alone, Ghostbusters etc.
Overall - excellent hotel, friendly staff and awesome location!

Great Hotel in Shanghai with some history thrown in. We slept extremely well considerring we were 1 block from Nanjing Rd. From time to time it was a little difficult talking to the hotel staff however they were very friendly and a fluent english speaker called us to makesure everything was satisfactory if there was an issue. Spectacular room and very reasonable if you purchase it through a hotel website rather than the langham's website. We would stay there again.
Wonderful

this was according to me the best deal i have ever got during any of my trips.
centrally located in the centre of the city. just 5 mins walk away from nanjing street. and in front of people's square.

i would definately recommend this hotel to all. not a 5 star hotel but good enuf for a comfortable stay.

Unique Qualities: the famous barbarossa restaurant is just 10mins walk from this place.
during my stay i even had walked to the bund from here. around 15mins and passing thru the interior streets of shanghai.

Boutique hotel - friendly, elegant, well located, exceptional service, beautiful, large rooms. Should be much more expensive - I love coming back! If you're spending more at a large multinational... Why? Good restaurants too.
Give it a go.

That is The Yangtze Boutique Shanghai. The Yangtze Boutique Shanghai, an Art Deco masterpiece infused with gold age of Shanghai, owns the superior geographical position. Located in the People's Square, centre of Shanghai, the hotel enjoys convenient access to all parts of the city with the Shanghai Metro Lines 1/2/8 less than 30 meters from the hotel. Moreover, the hotel is bordered by major cultural and entertainment highlights within walking distance, such as Nanjing Pedestrian Road, People's Park, the Raffles City, the Shanghai Museum, and the Shanghai Grand Theatre. This hotel attracts guests with its private and graceful environment instead of the splendid and magnificent impression. The stained glass dome looks so gorgeous with carved staircase winding up. The candlelit crystal lighting collocates with palatial valance creating the elegant and sumptuous atmosphere. The unique collections displayed on the wall of guest room floor corridors, such as jewelry boxes, manual-shaving-hair tools, ancient door latch, traditional pipes, ladies' hand bags, Hawksbill needles, cookie boxes, etc, all tell guests the history of Shanghai. Entering each room, the song " Rose, Rose, I love you" reminds each guest of the prosperity of the old Shanghai with its sweet voice and nostalgia melody. Standing on the guest room private balcony, you could feel the quick pace of the modern city while retrospect the past good times at the same time.Yangtze Hotel, the predecessor of The Yangtze Boutique Shanghai, opened in 1934, owns 80 years of history. Decorated with lavish art deco style, this hotel was touted as "The Third Largest Hotel in the Far East" by the renowned architect, Li Pan. This hotel used to be a popular social resort gathered many celebrities and movie stars, and it was exactly the birthplace of the most classic and well-known song "Rose, Rose, I love you". In order to inherit this cultural heritage, Yangtze Boutique reserves this song as the background music in the room, and names one suit of room as "Rose Suite" to be one of the signature of the hotel, which becomes the favorites of many guests. Over the past 80 years, the Yangtze Hotel witnessed the ups and downs of Shanghai. In 2009, the Yangtze Hotel was renovated gorgeously and re-emerged in a great sumptuous way, reserving the classic Art Deco design style while mixing the 1930s old Shanghai style together. Just like the time flying back, The Yangtze Boutique Shanghai guides guests back to the glamorous and extravagant life in old Shanghai with great charm and elegant demeanor. ... more   less
