“Great hotel, great location, great value”
Reviewed January 5, 2012

Langham Hotels has a way of creating hotels that have such a great sense of place that you identify the hotel with the place totally. For me, the Eaton in Hong Kong is such a place and now the Yangtze Boutique in Shanghai IS Shanghai for me. Outstanding location right off Nanjing Road, half a block from the Metro, a walk to the Bund, with great rooms, excellent restaurants, spa, gym and service.

Room Tip: Join the Langham 1865 club to get upgrades.

The hotel location is fantastic, just a few steps from people square and 20 minutes walk from the Bund. Art Deco atmosphere make it feel like a trip to Old Shanghai with all the modern comfort. Staying in this cozy hotel is so different from the towers around. Ideal for a discovery weekend to Shanghai.

In a word: superb. Conveniently located two blocks from Nanjing Road, across the street from People's Park, and in a low rise 1934 Art Deco building whose interior was refurbished 2 years ago, this hotel is a gem -- friendly, attentive staff; beautiful large bedrooms and wonderful bathrooms (my room faced the adjacent church rather than the interior courtyard); gorgeous two floor Art Deco interior courtyard where a musician on the first floor plays music in the morning and late afternoon while the friendly servers at the beautiful lounge on the second floor have a nice happy hour two-for-one wine selection (quite good) with snacks; perfectly fine morning breakfast buffet (around 20 USD if that meal is not included in your package); free and very fast WIFI, though of course many web sites are blocked; and small but adequate fitness facility. I did not try the on-site spa. While large, impersonal high rise hotels are common in Shanghai, this one is for those who like small "period" hotels with charm, taste, and a sense of China. On my last evening, I was having a glass of wine in the second floor lounge that overlooks the atrium when a woman walked down the grand curving staircase to the first floor, singing a 1930s song, posing for photos. So stylish!

We stayed three night in this hotel and everything was excellent. We booked the 'Heritage 1934' package in an Art Deco Junior Suite which has a big balcony and a spacious bathroom. The furniture inside the room is in an old shanghainese style and the bed was huge!

It is barely 50 steps away from People's Square station exit 14. People's Square is also an interchange station for metro line 1,2 and 8. Most of the taxi drivers also know the road where the hotel is located. It only takes around thirty RMB maximum to all the chic and stylish bars and restaurants we went!

It was a shame that we had not tried the breakfast in Ciao(An Italian restaurant next to the reception) during our stay. Instead, since the 'Heritage 1934' package offered 500RMB F&B voucher, we had lunch in Ciao before we checked out. The lunch menu was quite limited. We ordered a spagetti Carbonara and steak burger which were ok. I am sure the food outside is more impressive though.

Staff were helpful and polite. They all spoke fluent English.

Loved this place - good location, reasonable price for the location.

Staff were excellent generally (bar staff were a bit blur) actually the bar is pretty uninspiring and one night they had some dreadful wailing form some woman in the lobby which was apparently entertainment....... the place is too small for microphones and sound systems!

Would highly recommend this hotel - especially for leisure travellers.

Really enjoyed my stay at the Langham. Great value for the price. Service was solid, concierge spoke good English. Bed was incredibly comfortable and bathroom was huge. We were given free WiFi -- I don't know why but I didn't complain.

Everythings pink. Or red. But the bathtub with tv screen, special bathsalt and open view is an experience.

Another must: the spa!
Service at reception, bar and room service is top.. Breakfast and manners of waiter there can be definitely improved.
Other than that, perfectly all expectations fulfilled.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
In the center of Shanghai with endless flow of people, there is a place that could take you back to the 1930s to appreciate the golden age of Shanghai. That is The Yangtze Boutique Shanghai. The Yangtze Boutique Shanghai, an Art Deco masterpiece infused with gold age of Shanghai, owns the superior geographical position. Located in the People's Square, centre of Shanghai, the hotel enjoys convenient access to all parts of the city with the Shanghai Metro Lines 1/2/8 less than 30 meters from the hotel. Moreover, the hotel is bordered by major cultural and entertainment highlights within walking distance, such as Nanjing Pedestrian Road, People's Park, the Raffles City, the Shanghai Museum, and the Shanghai Grand Theatre. This hotel attracts guests with its private and graceful environment instead of the splendid and magnificent impression. The stained glass dome looks so gorgeous with carved staircase winding up. The candlelit crystal lighting collocates with palatial valance creating the elegant and sumptuous atmosphere. The unique collections displayed on the wall of guest room floor corridors, such as jewelry boxes, manual-shaving-hair tools, ancient door latch, traditional pipes, ladies' hand bags, Hawksbill needles, cookie boxes, etc, all tell guests the history of Shanghai. Entering each room, the song " Rose, Rose, I love you" reminds each guest of the prosperity of the old Shanghai with its sweet voice and nostalgia melody. Standing on the guest room private balcony, you could feel the quick pace of the modern city while retrospect the past good times at the same time.Yangtze Hotel, the predecessor of The Yangtze Boutique Shanghai, opened in 1934, owns 80 years of history. Decorated with lavish art deco style, this hotel was touted as "The Third Largest Hotel in the Far East" by the renowned architect, Li Pan. This hotel used to be a popular social resort gathered many celebrities and movie stars, and it was exactly the birthplace of the most classic and well-known song "Rose, Rose, I love you". In order to inherit this cultural heritage, Yangtze Boutique reserves this song as the background music in the room, and names one suit of room as "Rose Suite" to be one of the signature of the hotel, which becomes the favorites of many guests. Over the past 80 years, the Yangtze Hotel witnessed the ups and downs of Shanghai. In 2009, the Yangtze Hotel was renovated gorgeously and re-emerged in a great sumptuous way, reserving the classic Art Deco design style while mixing the 1930s old Shanghai style together. Just like the time flying back, The Yangtze Boutique Shanghai guides guests back to the glamorous and extravagant life in old Shanghai with great charm and elegant demeanor. ... more   less
