Ive been to this place a few years back and it was definitely better before as it was more 'local' than what it is now. They have definitely improved it (mall across has clean public toilet) for tourists but prices of goods have gone up as well. Overall, I would still recommend it for tourists who are looking to shop for local flavors.

very interesting place to go and pretty photogenic place! Shop selling touristy things but in old little shops! Though things here a bit expensive, mainly targetting tourists!

Don't know why I hadn't visited in my prior visits to Shanghai. Loved it! The alleys and stores are great. Highly recommended. Although I didn´t buy anything.... though prices were high compared to what I get at Yuyuan Gardens.

This is a favourite to take visitors to. The little alleyways are quaint and give a real taste of what old Shanghai must have been like. There is a huge variety of gifts to buy, although they are somewhat pricey. Many restaurants, a shopping mall across the street and the Metro right there make it easy to get to and spend time at.

We stayed away from this attraction, because of how it was described in in many of the travel books and forums. We went briefly on our last day, we now regret not having been there more time. This is a MUST for when in shanghai. It is difficult to describe but it has a feeling of "up and coming" artsy district, with great little, shops and restaurants. This is where you can find good quality and original products at a reasonable price. The bargain markets are all the same and offer low quality, fake stuff, and the Chinese malls have everything Europe or the Americas have, but with a big markup.
