“Worst idea staying at L'Otel Shanghai”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 9, 2013

First, very bad service... I arrived at lunch time and the restaurant was closed. And yes, I was starving cause the location is the WORST ever... there's nothing around!!

The girl in the frontdesk barely speaks English.

They opened my room while showering right after I got some minutes to chill out, around 3 pm... What an odd time to clean up a room that was clean... And didn't stop even when I was shouting that the room was occupied.

Finally, after deciding to leave just one night after checking in tried to negotiate the conditions (my reservation was originally for 3 nights) they say they will charge the full stay and not give back a single yuan.

So disappointed!!!!

Although a 10 minute walk from the Shanghai south rail/metro station the location had little else going for it. There were very few restaurants close by. To get to the Bund etc it took some time on the metro. Room was clean and had everything we needed and was good for the price, however when you get a balcony room you expect to be able to use it. The door only opened 6 inches. Service from reception staff varied. One was very good and spoke reasonable English, the other was not interested at all to help. They don't mention it but there is a laundry that you can use at no cost. Didn't eat at the restaurant and it appeared very few people did. Be prepared to hand over 500RMB on arrival as a deposit even though the room had been fully paid for prior. Make sure you keep your receipt as we read others had trouble getting it back without it. Best thing would be its a non smoking hotel. We booked via Hotels.com and their location map provided with our booking confirmation would not have got you to the hotel. It was completely wrong. Even taxi drivers outisde train station had no idea where it was (even though just a 2 minute taxi ride away).

This must be the best hotel in China. No one smokes not even the security guards. Its the cleanest newest hotel we've seen and everything works as promised, even the fridge. The staff have excellent customer service even though their English is limited. It's only 10 mins to Metro Line 1and 3 and even has free self service laundry facilities. They have planted trees and ferns everywhere to create a restful environment. I would definitely stay here again.

This is by far the worst over hyped hotel i have been subjected to ( like a torture since i have prepaid for 4 nights and am in mood to spend on the cancellations and find a new place).
The horror starts when the taxi drivers are clueless about its location. I had a very helpful taxi driver who got down at various places to ask for directions but we were stuck on the roads for about 40 mins from shanghai south railway station which is 1.1 kms from the hotel itself !!!!!

The phone number mentioned on agoda for this property is WRONG. but hotel never bothered to get it amended? The driver and I kept on hopelessly trying but since its an old number we got no help from anyone for directions.

Dont have lot of feedback for staff as they have no staff on WEEKENDS and i checked in on saturday. Upon asking for help with the luggage i was simply informed no one to help you as no staff on weekends .... wow!!! this hotel looks like a dream place for workers who enjoy wekeknds off without any backup plans??? How about some discount to the guests ear Lotel hotel for weekend arrivals specially as they drag all their stuff in sunny hot day by themselves?
Other then that the front desk lady wasnt the most cheerful lady we have encountered in china hotels!

Coming to the room - we booked a lotel room which turned out to be matchbox size maybe just good enough for a single guest and not a couple and has weak wifi connection.Shower cubicle just opoens on the toilet seat it seems. The shampoo n cleaner in the shower area look cheap quality and not match the concept they claim they are : ECO hotel! Cheap and not organic products.
Air con takes atleast 20 mins to cool a tiny room, maybe time to replace these dear lotel hotel?
After a tiring day in hot n humid shanghai we were not pleased with the air con situation.

No coffee sachets in the room which supposedly caters to international guests!!
When you step out of the room the fridge shuts down as well and by the time you come back all your cool chilled drinks become some hot herbal teas..... not happpy at all to see my beer boiling hot inside a cabinet ( fridge with no power basically)

3 more days to go!im dreading it.

Room Tip: please do not book it unless you are on a business trip and have no other option

Amazing value for the money. I booked the rooms using agoda and got everything I asked for. It's about 10 minutes to get to the closest metro station, walking slowly, leisure pace (line 1, south china railway station stop).

This hotel is a hidden gem!

Staff is extremely helpful and friendly.

This is by far the cleanest hotel I've stayed at in mainland china.

Stay here!!

This hotel was the best find yet in Shanghai! Check in was smooth and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooms were unbelievably clean! Modern appointments, clean, uncluttered.Towels were very high quality. It is the first time I signed on for a non-smoking room in CHina and actually felt the "non-smoking" part was up tpo par. The entire hotel is non-smoking, so you may want to bear that in mind, if you are a smoker. The surcharge for smoking in the room is very hefty, almost doubling the price.

I had a loft room and my colleague had a standard room. Both came with "King" size beds, but they were actually "Queen" size bed by North American standards. No matter - plenty of room for one person.I liked the privacy of the bedroom area in the loft. It left the downstairs office/living area free for working and 'living' in.
The hotel is located just a few minutes' walk from the subway station. Down the street and around the corner is Meilong Rd, where we found great shopping at affordable prices and some lovely restaurants. I could have stayed in this area for a few days and been quite happy. It was a very pretty and restful area of Shanghai, near the University of Science & Technology.
It is a bit distant from Pudong airport, but great if you need to be in PuXi or have to connect to a train or flight from Hongqiao Airport, as I often do. I think the value of the hotel is worht the extra taxi fare to get there from Pudong, personally.
I will defintiely be back.

Room Tip: I liked the loft room. Good choice if you are up for climbing stairs. The professional photos on...

This was an unexpected pleasure. It is a little off the beaten track but well worth the stay. Use the money you save at this hotel for taxis. My room was the smallest which was quite small. I recommend a larger room. Everything was top quality- soap, Linens, breakfast. I only ate in the restaurant one time besides breakfast and that was a disappointment. I did not eat again in the restaurant except for breakfast which was delicious.
Everything at breakfast was exceptionally fresh and a great variety was offered both Chinese and Western. They cook omletes to your order. They make their own soy milk. They offered fresh vegetables every day. Many of the staff speak English and if the person on duty does not the they find someone who does. I even had to send an urgent business paper to the USA and they took care of it efficiently and at a reasonable cost. The internet in the lobby hall worked well and was always available.
They really believe in the Green philosophy and everything reflects it. The interior walss were often banks of living plants which was very refreshing. I found the whole atmosphere to be peaceful, restful and invigorating. I wasn't even aware of the Shanghai smog.

Room Tip: Don't book the smallest room.
