“Great location, great value”
Reviewed December 13, 2010

Great location, within walking distance from the ChungSan Park/Mall & Renaissance hotel. Very comfortable beds. Most hotels in the price range have very hard beds, but Penta's were reasonably soft. Rooms have modern styling, but the bathroom was very cramped. I wanted the top floor, to avoid all the street level noise, but the roof have some machinery that kicks in every 15-30 minutes, so I moved to a another room on the other side of the building. Overall, a great value.

This is the hotel with the brightest rooms that I've ever stayed at. Rooms are of average size but well equipped with all the necessities. Location is out of the town and a trip to The Bund by taxi cost approximately RMB25 - RMB30. Taxi drivers may not know the hotel. It is easier if you mention the adjoinig Mayfair Hotel (Ba Li Chun Tien Da Jiu Dian in Chinese). The breakfast is good. If breakfast is not included in your package, there is a 24hrs bakery next door and a Mc Donald's is also within walking distance.

A little out from the main 'downtown' area of Shanghai, but subway entrance nearby so no problem. Also a park close by, and good shopping centre not too far away. Room was fine, although noticed quite a pungent smell in the room and the lobby which I think was related to the works going on. Buffet breakfast was good. Lobby area (in the Mayfair Hotel) was well maintained and the staff efficient. Good value hotel.

We used this hotel for guests at my wedding in Shanghai. The wedding banquet was held in the adjoining New World Mayfair Hotel next door and the Penta Hotel is very convenient for guests who travel to Shanghai to attend a wedding at the New World Mayfair Hotel as it is cheaper and right next door to it.

The room was small but big enough for our purposes and clean with new modern furnishings. The TV had all the major English language news channels and one English movie channel. As the hotel is adjoined to the five star New World Mayfair Hotel, guests can use the amenities of the latter (e.g. restaurant, bar, spa, business centre etc.) The hotel is also well located next to an underground train network station, a park and the French Concession. The staff speak English quite well.

The problems we had with the hotel were not particularly significant but most could be easily rectified by the hotel. They have English language europop music piped into the hallways of the hotel floors. It is irritating and unnecessary. Sometimes the shower water turns intermittently cold and then hot again for no reason. Not all of my guests experienced this problem so it may be a matter of when you choose to shower. The water pressure in the shower is also quite low.

One breakfast is given free for each room. However, as each room will probably have more than one person, this is more of an irritation than an incentive. In the end, none of my wedding guests were actually charged for any extra breakfasts that they ate. So we guessed that the offer of a single breakfast per room may be a ploy to get guests to upgrade to two breakfasts when checking in.

The lobby of the hotel was quite cold and did not seem to be adequately heated. The closet space in the room was small. There is some traffic noise from the busy road outside the hotel that can be heard from the room.
