Ramada Pudong Airport Shanghai
Ranked #120 of 5,161 Hotels in Shanghai
Reviewed April 22, 2013

The lobby to this place looks like you have just entered the grandest airport hangout you’ve seen – large, polished, luxurious, it certainly was a good welcome. The rooms don’t quite live up to this standard and mine was a bit pokey and not particularly easy to heat as it was pretty cold. The bathroom is small as well and generally it is a place to not unpack, grab a sleep and then get the free (and very full) shuttle bus to the airport the next morning. As such it is decent enough, only a few minutes away, but if you’re doing more than getting a flight then this isn’t much to talk about.

I write this as one who had never been to China before, I didn't know what to expect. I stayed as I arrived at the airport Ramada. A US Ramada is basically a motel; the Pudong Ramada is far nicer, more like a good Marriott. Nice bar and a great restaurant, a really first rate breakfast.

On the way home I stayed a night at the Qube, which is nicer still, what I'd rate as a high-end 4-star in the US, like one of the better Hyatts. But when I come again and wanted to spend a night at an airport hotel I'd probably choose this Ramada over the Qube, even though the Qube is (even) nicer. The reason: the Ramada has a booth in the terminal and a scheduled shuttle. The Qube needs a cab ride, unless you've scheduled a shuttle long in advance.

I'm a little surprised at the reviews I've seen for this hotel, which are "hard bed", "thin walls", "cheap and basic". I thought this was a gorgeous hotel ... it would be nice in the US, and it's better than anything in Europe.

Some advice: I was worried about three things coming to China, the money, the airports and the water. As regards the former, I changed money at JFK, and that turned out to be enough. But my Chinese friends have told me that Chinese ATMs are temperamental about which US ATM cards they work with ... investigate this on the web before you come. As regards the airport, the two Chinese airports I've seen (Pudong and Xianyang) are probably better than ours in the US, at least that's my impression: very efficient, clean and kind of nice. As regards the water: not even the Chinese drink their water. All hotels seem to give you two bottles per day, and buying more is easy.

Round extremely hard bed. Very basic room. I think it was clean. We were stuck in the airport for 9 hours and had to wait until 12:30 to check in for our plane. The room was the best 100 dollars we have spent. Our flight from Australia totaled 33 hours so the six hours sleep with private bathroom and shower with amenities including toothbrush, paste, shampoo, soap and towels.
Not even close to luxurious but we were too tired to worry.

Nearly everything in China is a little bit squiffy and mostly this is amusing, if a little frustrating at times. This example, from the Ramada Hotel is typical. There is a notice in the room stating the following: 1. If the room is too warm, adjust the temperature or switch off the A/C. Do not change the A/C to cool, or the temperature will be even higher! 2. For cooling the room immediately, please open the window and switch off the A/C. Good idea, you might say but on the window there is a notice which says “Do not open this window!”

How barmy is that? Turning the A/C to cool, causes the room to become hotter and although they advise you to do so, opening the window is forbidden. Call the men in white coats, I am going potty!

Unfortunately, this is a typical airport hotel, no ambiance; it put me in mind of a cross between an aircraft hangar and a tarts bedroom. Travellers stay here only if they are stranded or have very early flights. The bar is cold and lacks atmosphere, the bar staff inexperienced and frankly incompetent, more interested in their mobile phones, than the needs of their clients and the band was excruciating. The Brasserie restaurant was icy cold, the food and service was below average. The rooms are tired and in need of refurbishment and judging by the noise, this is in process.

The cost was very reasonable and like everything in China, negotiable. I am an old China hand and I advise: never accept the first price, always bargain, even if it goes against the grain, in an international hotel. I have heard the locals arguing and disputing the price and I can tell you, they get it for a lot less than we do, so swallow your reticence and fight for those discounts, it is expected of you.

There was one redeeming feature of this establishment and that was the receptionist, a kindly soul called Jerry Liu, who helped us enormously, he even came with us to the business centre and helped us to overcome the normal problems of China, i.e. nothing in English and an attendant with the intelligence, knowledge and demeanour of a Neanderthal. Ramada should promote this Jerry Liu and move him to one of their higher profile properties, where he can more easily help foreigners to cope with the vagaries and frustrations of China.

Nice room - free internet - nice choices for breakfast, ala carte or full smorg.
Very reasonable chinese restaurant - decent wine choices , both chinese and international -
great food and selection. Most staff are inexperienced and do not understand English

Room Tip: Half of the hotel is presenrly being renovated

Stayed here the night before I flew home purely because of it's location. Leisure facilities are good, price is very reasonable given it's location. Service is spot on in all areas. The free courtesy bus to the airport leaves every few minutes and was exactly what I needed to avoid stress before a long flight. Rooms are very large but currently ever so slightly tired (by European standards, they have another 10 years life left in them!) - they are renovating at the moment. Breakfast was OK - not as much choice as I'd had at the other Shangahi hotel I stayed in, but all edible.

Nothing impressive of this hotel. The location is a selling point, because it is only for the travelers who just want to stay overnight and take an early flight from pudong airport. Otherwise, you will be disappointed by lukewarm service, poor food, small room and boring entertainment. The free shuttle bus service to the airport is the only highlight. If you do not want to have dinner in hotel, you can take taxi to Chuansha town, which is about 20mins drive.

Room Tip: Room with a balcony is perfect for a night view of Pudong airport.
