“Great value in Puxi”
Reviewed March 9, 2010

I have stayed here three times in the past 6 months, twice alone and once with several collegaues. This hotel is a great price point in a great part of the city. It is very close to the intersection of Huaihai Rd and Maoming Rd. A little hard to find, since it is tucked at the back of a side alley. The first time I went there, I couldn't imagine where I was being taken. Then, I turned the corner and was delighted to find such a little gem could be hidden back there.

They have beautiful rooms with kitchenette of sorts - fridge and tea kettle but no stove or microwave - and separate bedrooms. They also have two-story, two bedrooms units that are a great value.

The bathrooms are modern and absolutely gorgeous, but the shower drains are not great. Be prepared to stand in water up to your ankles by the time you finish the shower.
I am not sure whether these are the "cheap seats" or not, but avoid the rooms that end in "02". Both myself and a colleague ended up in "02" rooms on different floors. They overlook an unsightly alley and are the size of good broom closets.

The breakfast is not the best I have had in Shanghai, but luckily, there is a Starbucks less than 5 minutes walk away.

If you are uncomfortable in an all Chinese environment or have no access to a bilingual friend or colleague via cell phone, this might not be the best hotel for you. I personally use Harrapp's English/Chinese dictionary and have had very little problem. If I get stuck, I call a Chinese friend on my cell phone, tell them my story and get them to relate whatever is needed to the staff person. So far, no problems.

I always look for a hotel with easy access to the Subway. The Subway stop (Line 1, South Shanxi, Exit 4) is literally across the street. The Subway in Shanghai is easy to use and very safe. Many times I am the only Caucasian in the train car and I have never felt uncomfortable.

Many of the great shops and restaurants of Puxi are within walking distance. The night lighting on Huaihai Rd is fantastic and worth the walk; the shopping and dining of Xintiandi are a short cab ride or nice long walk away, but there are many wonderful restaurants within blocks of the hotel.. And for those needing a 'fix' of western food, there is a large KFC in the subway stairwell.

I will definitely stay here again because of the value for my money and the convenient location.

This boutique hotel is hidden in an alley of the South Maoming Road in the French Concession area. At first, I thought the taxi driver dropped us at a wrong spot. I just couldn't believe there would be a decent hotel in that alley. But, just 5 steps further and there was this little gem. The room was very spacious with a separate seating area and was furnished in a Chinese mansion style. The service was good, but the English of the staff wasn't of a good level but they did their best. But best of all it's the value. We paid EUR 70 per night including breakfast. You can't find such a deal for such a good place in the French Concession. I prefer this small scale hotel above the big 4/5 stars like Jin Jiaing Hotel or Le Royal Meridien (stayed in both as well).

I thought this was much better than one of the best hotel that i stayed in the golden triangle on the same trip if you really want a local shanghai feel. This hotel is strategically located in French Consession and it was newly opened when i stayed there last year. Most taxis were not aware of this hotel and the entrance definitely doesn't look like it is leading you to an amazing local hotel. The hotel was converted from an old shanghai building within a district. And if you are keen to go to Sun Yat Sen's old house, you can even walk there from this hotel. Along the way, stop by at nice cafe. However, try not to get the room next to the gardern or on first floor, especially the first room as it is really really warm and you can hear whenever there's a taxi outside the hotel.

the rooms are really huge and it comes with a mini kitchen although you can't cook there.

  • Liked — the old shanghainese feel compare to modern city where you can get anywhere
  • Disliked — the centralized aircon system
