We expected restaurants at this tier and pricing to provide excellent service, food, ambiance, etc. however found that only the food lived up to expectation. We were a party of 7 people for a birthday celebration and were told after arriving that there is an extra charge for the surprise birthday cake we brought. Then we discovered there was a minimum charge on the table (RMB 8000) which was not informed when we booked. As we started with appetizers and drinks, we wanted some background music but was informed that their stereo was being repaired. During the dinner service, a mistake was made on one person's order so she only got her food after the rest of us finished. Overall, for this tier of restaurant, a lot more can done to improve the quality of service. The one saving grace was that the food was excellent - highly recommend to start with 'broken egg with potato and smoked foam'; the T-Bone steak and Cod were delicious entrees.

bad service! the food was not reaching the level aspected by such noble restaurant . After wait 1,5 hours for a "paella" they provided a scorched and scraped rice from the bottom of the pot. In Shanghai, better to go to any Chinese restaurant and ,after spending 1/30 of the cost ,eat an excellent Cantonese rice.

We went for an anniversary dinner. First they put us in an upstairs room and closed the door. Just us and another couple. No background music, just uncomfortable quiet. We finally asked the waiter to leave the door open. Then the waiter did not know what a martini was. Ended up bringing me Martini and Rossi so evidently the bartender didn't know either.
The saving grace was at least the the food was well done. With the exception of my husband's scallops which he paid a main price for a tapas portion.
To their credit they took the drink off our bill. Still there are other places in Shanghai in this price range that can deliver the whole package.

This is doubtless an upmarket and very pricey restaurant. You choose it for a good celebration where you don't count pennies or euros or yuan.

Situated in a large park between Zhiao Chabang lu and Hengshan lu, it is a large manorial house converted to a singing bar downstairs and two salons upstairs for quiet dining. The house is well insulated so very little of the downstairs sounds creep upstairs to bother you.

Menu is very Spanish, with a selection of tapas to open up with. At the top of the menu are: foie gras with the Casa's own sauce and flavorings, jamon serrano, and a special gazpacho soup with a fresh cherry flavor.

Main courses are grilled salmon, the rib of the rib-eye steak, a tender entrecote, or a large porterhouse for four persons.

There was a long delay for dessert, as the kitchen was preparing main courses for another table, so to while away the time, the chef offered us a champagne and didn't charge for dessert!!!

For lunchtime, a table can be reserved in the garden, and depending on the season, the Casa may offer a degustation menu of several dishes.

Casa Martin has a long wine list with almost every variety and price range of Spanish wines, all kept in refrigerated wine reefers at 14°, though the bottles are often condensated when brought into hot, muggy weather of Shanghai summer.

As the wine list is lengthy it is best to ask the mayordomo for a few suggestions, what goes best with grilled red meat? with salmon? with steamed fish? etc then select within your budget. We got a pricey red wine from Ribero region, a 2008 Figueras Doce. A bit piqued upon first taste, but after decantering and airing, it was elegant, une robe parfaite!

And don't spoil a good meal with inferior wine!

This was my second time at la Casa, the first was last summer in the garden-exquisite!

The restaurant is situated in a park and the wonderful building was owned by a Shanghai record label. They have some vinyl records on display in the restaurant. We ordered some white wine to start. The restaurant did give an extra appetizer for all, but I think this is just standard for them (not that we are special guests). Seafood was fresh, but there was nothing special to it. And for the price, the portion was really small. The osso buco rice tasted more interesting, but still could not justify the price tag. Finally, we ordered espresso macchiato and explicitly told the waiter in Chinese that it is espresso with small amount of milk on top. But they still forgot and gave us the normal espresso instead. They did not charge finally for the espresso and made us new ones. But I had not expected this from a high class restaurant. All in all, the food average, service is average, and it is not difficult to find better food for much less money in Shanghai.
