Koala Garden Hostel
Ranked #69 of 799 Shanghai B&B and Inns
Reviewed April 20, 2014 via mobile

We are students and wanted a cheap hostel for our weekend in Shanghai but this place was not even worth the 4£ a night we paid. We were supposed to have out own 4 bed bedroom and instead had to share one. Part of the shower was broken. Checkin took ages. Security is pretty dodgy. We didn't get any room key. And to top it, we were woken up in the morning by a guy trying to fix our door!
Location wise its pretty good, you can get a taxi to about anywhere for less than 2£ and there is a 24h supermarket close by.
Wifi was a bit dodgy also but basic things could be achieved.

This hostel offers very good value. Its location is convenient being based in a quiet, very clean site road right next to one of the best and largest shopping streets of Shanghai. It takes you 5-10 mins to the next metro station. We stayed in an en suite room (not as nice as on the pictures), which was clean and well maintained. There is free Wi-Fi, which should even give you signal inside the rooms. The aircon was okay.

Great location on historical street, room not ready on arrival cleaned quickly, although carpet still filthy and remained this way. Walls very thin, not great when the neighbours are rather enthusiastic about each other! Arrived back after day out to find the entire reception area and restaurant turned into a wedding scene complete with chapel and tables, photos taken and then it was all dismantled, no explanations given. Watch out booking on hostelworld as rates are actually per person not per room, which we had not realised, ended up paying double what we had expected.

I rarely complain about customer service or dodgy backpackers, but these guys really took the cake. Firstly, the staff spoke minimal english, which if you are running an international hotel is a pain in the neck. It took 15 minutes to establish things like, "my airconditioning is broken", or "what's the best way to get to the airport". Secondly, they gave me a really awful room right off the lobby and bar area - so it was incredibly loud. When I realised where the room was, I asked if they had any other spare rooms. They said they did, but it would cost me extra. The room stank and the airconditioning was broken so it was like a sauna. A smelly sauna. The next morning they kicked me out at 9 am to fix the sewer and the airconditioning. So they knew there was a problem with the room, and yet they still put me in there when there were other rooms available! This is appalling customer service - putting me in a quieter room that met basic hygiene requirements would have avoided this review and been a far better business decision. I'd avoid these guys.

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms which open directly off the lobby.

i agree that here is more like a hotel than a hostel, and i heard that they used to have another hostel a shanghai, while now is closed, i like the atmosphere here though chatting or socializing with backpacking is not that common here, but it's located in a nice and quiet neighborhood, which is rare in Shanghai, since you can see crowded of people everywhere in Shanghai, food is okay here, though a little high to me, but i would recommend here as a weekend break since you can still go to anywhere by metro easily

The Hostel is situated in a nice cultural area & the building looks good on a wonderful historic street.

Stayed at Koala Garden for two nights, our room was nice and comfortable. The decoration of room was colorful with some character and was clean.
The staff was friendly, easy-going, and spoke English well.

There was also a Metro station & shopping centers nearby.
Breakfast here was not free and quite expensive too.

A very good hostel overall
