Owner description: A residential area of Shanghai once designated for the French, the French Concession is popular with tourists and expats, and appreciated for its cafes, tree-lined avenues, and tudor houses.

The Old French Concession and its surrounding areas is not just about stopping by and looking at some old buildings. If you want to enjoy this area, one must be prepared to take a stroll

We did a self guided (based on a suggested itinery) walking tour through the area starting from Xintiandi to Tianzifang and along the way, there were ample sights, diversions and places of interest along the way (e.g. Sun Yat Sen's house, etc). The tree lined streets, old buildings and pit stops along the way kept us busy for at least half a day.

Driving through this place will not do it justice. Got to walk. Well worth at least half a day. Many sights close at 4pm, so make sure you plan your walk.

The area of the old French Concession is quite huge stretching many city blocks and going from highrises to tree lined streets with old villas.
One can shop here for the old and the new, eat street food or fine dinning.
Look up the area on a map and a good guide book and find your own area to enjoy.

Lots of patios and delicious restaurants. Some shopping but Tianzifang is better for shopping. Just go eat lunch on a patio and enjoy the atmosphere.

I was excited to visit this neighborhood after hearing everyone go crazy over it, but I am not sure what the appeal is. There is nothing Chinese about it and we frankly find it boring. Tree-lined streets are a dime a dozen in most parts of the world; not sure why one would come all the way to China to walk along one!

This was very deceiving. There is nothing French about it except a few balconies, but it was a French settlement area back in the day. Today there are narrow lanes lined with shops and food stalls and restaurants and bars.

We didn't want to shop, but did stop at an outdoor cafe and ordered a beer. It was delightful to people watch and enjoy the atmosphere. You could spend a lot of time here or just pass through like we did.

This was a welcome break after a hectic tour schedule.
