Owner description: A residential area of Shanghai once designated for the French, the French Concession is popular with tourists and expats, and appreciated for its cafes, tree-lined avenues, and tudor houses.

This was very deceiving. There is nothing French about it except a few balconies, but it was a French settlement area back in the day. Today there are narrow lanes lined with shops and food stalls and restaurants and bars.

We didn't want to shop, but did stop at an outdoor cafe and ordered a beer. It was delightful to people watch and enjoy the atmosphere. You could spend a lot of time here or just pass through like we did.

This was a welcome break after a hectic tour schedule.

I have lived in this area on four occasions in the last six years. Tree lined streets. Quiet tucked away areas with lovely architecture. Gorgeous gardens glimpsed behind walls. Former glory of the area is still witnessed with houses built by Europeans, some of which now house consulates. Real neighborhoods with small vendors, stores, restaurants. A lovely area for families to live or simply for a walk on a spring day...or any day. Good area for bike riding, having tea, wine or exploring.

Give yourself time to wander through this tree lined neighborhood. The architecture was great and so was the vibe of this place.

This was better than we expected. We kept going down laneways and discovering even more interesting places. You could spend at least a morning - if not more - here. So many interesting shops, cafes (with real coffee). There was even an Irish pub!!!!!.
Loved it
