“Peaceful”
Reviewed May 25, 2013

This was a very quite & peaceful area with a lot of trees. It felt as though you were way from everything. There were plenty of restaurants & coffee shops to try & also upmarket stores.

“One of the best old neighborhoods in Asia”
Reviewed May 22, 2013

The concession area is much larger than I imagined and even more impressive, the city seems inclined to maintain it as best they can. Very few high-rises have gone up and the streets are still very pedestrian friendly, with arches of trees and greenery keeping them shady and atmospheric. There are some new "gentrified" shopping and restaurant developments being done, but even they are trying to maintain the architectural look and feel, working to restore properties rather than change them dramatically. There are a lot of areas to visit within the old Concession - all were terrific.

“Nice European place in shanghai”
Reviewed May 21, 2013

It is a very nice European place with a lot of French and German cafes as well as the the Chinese one. During our stay in shanghai I should say that here is the biggest concentration of stylish, modern, well dressed Chinese people:) you definitely should have a lunch there and look around the crowd... Also it is a good place for some authentic souvenirs

“Fun walks if you like architecture”
Reviewed May 21, 2013

We used a walking tour from a guidebook (Frommer's) to see some of the sights in this interesting part of the city. Although we didn't visit every stop suggested, we got a good sense of the area. It was a welcome relief from some of the more crowded areas of the city.

“Historic”
Reviewed May 19, 2013

The former French Concession area is wonderful. We walked along the HuaiHai Road, formerly known as the Avenue Joffre. It is very upmarket with lovely shops and eating places. We enjoyed the atmosphere and the historic buildings.
