Ji Hotel Shanghai Lujiazui Pudong South Road

This is basically an update. I stayed in this hotel 2 years ago, when it was an 'FX Hotel'. The chain changed, rooms are the same.

Likes:
Rooms are nice designed
Free internet in the room (Ethernet, no WiFi)
Large safe
Not too noisy (try stay on Weifang Rd, not Pudong South Rd.)
DunkinDonuts in the lobby (for coffee and alternate breakfast)
Location is OK

Dislikes:
Terrible breakfast. No coffee! No Toast!
No smoking on smoking floor not enforced.
Noisy people (a "please be quiet" sign in the corridor could help)

My suggestion would to have the DunkinDonuts accept the otherwise useless RMB30 breakfast coupon.

Room Tip: Try the rear side of the hotel, although all rear room are 2 bed rooms (I think)

I had stayed at another FX hotel in Shanghai and had been satisfied, so I booked a "superior room" at this one on the net. The room had very trendy design, but it was small and poorly lit and there was nothing in the mini-bar. There was a safe in the room. My room was not on the street side, but I could still hear the traffic, so I suspect that the street-side rooms are noisy.

When I arrived, there was nobody to help me with my three bags or to open the door for me. At check-in, I asked for a non-smoking room. Sure enough, when I entered the room I found it smelled of cigarette, and the ashtray on the bed-side table confirmed that I had a smoking room. I called the front desk to ask for a non-smoking room again, but the girl said "the housekeeper will go to your room and make it non-smoking". They seem to think that taking out the ashtray will make it a non-smoking room. So if you don't like stinky rooms, I would suggest that you pick another hotel.

This hotel advertises itself as a business hotel, so it is reasonable to expect it to be a convenient place to work on your laptop before a meeting. There is indeed free and fast internet connection in the room. The chair is also very comfortable. What's missing is just a desk. So I had to sit on the floor with my laptop on the bed-side table, a very uncomfortable position.

The location is OK, but a little far from a metro station. Don't trust them when they say on their website that the Oriental Pearl TV Tower is a "short walk" away. I got tired before even seeing its tip.

I stayed a few days in March 2009 in the FX Hotel (Lujiazui) in Pudong. The location is quite convenient. It's on Weifang West Rd., about 15-20 Minutes from DongChang Rd. subway station, and about 10 Minutes slow walk from Pucheng Lu, a major shopping street in Pudong.

The hotel is quite small, but very new. Rooms are new, clean and quite large. Very stylish too. They are a bit dark and a reading lamp at the writing desk would be a good idea. All rooms have wired and wireless internet free of charge.

Another issue is noise, the noise from the street comes through in all rooms. My first room towards Dongchang Lu I had to change. The other sides are a bit better.

Staff is friendly and speak English to various degrees from zero to OK. I speak some mandarin and that helped. All staff was very helpful and I remember "Cici" as most cheerful.

Some improvement could be done on the breakfast. With RMB25 (~US$3.00) you can't expect too much in terms of variety, but service could be better. I like to give a few examples:

One morning there was no milk - only after a few request they found some
Plates get refilled very slowly, would certainly better to have 2 plates to interchange
The "eggman" disappears when he feels like it
Sometimes they ran out on forks
The 9:30 cutt-off time is a little early

That's all down to poor restaurant management and could be improved easily with no added cost.

All together it's good place and cheap place to stay and I would stay anytime again!
