“Great Shanghainese Food”
Reviewed July 7, 2012

Location was a bit far. The restaurant ground floor was actually a few stairs below street level, but there was upper storey. All dishes we ordered were delicious, not oily. The braised pork in pot was tender, stir-fried shrimps had tiny shells attached to tails. Highly recommended drunken chicken, for its tenderness, taste and smell.

Would be happy to return but had to book weeks ahead of time!

“Best Shanghainese Food in Shanghai”
Reviewed May 29, 2012

I was never very fond of Shanghainese food as the dishes tend to be very oily and sometimes, too sweet. That changed when I first ate at Jesse's 11 years ago. I now go there regularly. Every time I have visitors in town, Jesse is where I take them and and so far all those who ate there raved about it. Must try dishes :

1. Braised fish head with spring onions - they use the head of the black cod, so the meat is tender and flakey. It is oily, but it is the oil from the fish so as far as I am concerned, it is 'good' oil. Note : this dish needs to be ordered in advance.

2. Stirred fried shrimp - this is a dish all shanghainese restaurants have, but Jesse does it really well. The shrimps are super fresh and tender.

3. Shanghainese rice with vegetable and Chinese ham - it tastes so good that I have friends who do not like rice eat a whole bowl !

4. Grandma's pork - their version is not too sweet as in most restaurants, they make it really sweet.

Jesse is housed in a small lane house and is really popular. Reservations are a must.

“Quirky, crowded, delicious and lots of fun”
Reviewed May 25, 2012

You will definitely need a reservation at this quirky little(!) triangle of a place wedged in between other buildings. The food is intriguing, the waiters harried, the atmosphere lively. I went with a friend who is Chinese and chef, so the meal was interesting, balanced and delicious.

“Great cosy area for dinner!`”
Reviewed May 24, 2012

Heard from the locals that this cafe is typically hard to get in. Well indeed! I like the ambience of a cosy shophouse. The mango salad was really good.

“Great Shanghainese restaurant for guests”
Reviewed May 14, 2012

I went here with a large group while I had visitors in town so they could sample classic Shanghainese cuisine. You must make reservations ahead of time (1 week or so ahead) because the old location is always booked. I was not in charge of ordering but we had over 10 or so dishes to share among a large group and most dishes were above average. I was a fan of the fried huangyu (I think it's croaker, but it's their fried fish), any of their sauteed vegetables, their fried rice, their cold tofu skin dish and their steamed fish. The environment is great for tourists or visitors as it is an old shanghainese house with narrow stairs and full of charm. It's best to go with a group and someone that speaks Chinese in order to order correctly. All in all, the ambiance definitely makes the experience but the food is well above average.
