“Not true to the brand...a poorly managed "imitation" of HI Express”
Reviewed September 3, 2012

What can HIE management be thinking? Or, are they thinking at all?

In USA, we love the HI Express and count on it to be crisp and clean. We rarely find a need to complain about anything. The rooms are attractive and well-maintained; the breakfast is adequate if less than inspired; and the facility is predictably pleasant.

In China, the opposite appears to be true. Chinese building and business owners are, as a rule, notorious (from a Western point of view) for constructing nice facilities and then doing absolutely the bare minimum to maintain them. This property is a perect example of the rule.

The exterior is fairly attractive, although the pavement at the entry way is old and uneven. The lobby is simple and bright, as per the HIE standard, but couches are stained and grimy.

The room we had--a junior suite--was serviceable but sterile. The carpets were clean, there was a safe, but no iron, no English TV, no refrigerator.

The bathroom offered soap and shampoo--no lotion, towels well past their replacement date (holes, worn spots). A colleague in an adjacent room had towels with someone else's hairs on them!

Breakfast was mostly Chinese food. Potatoes were very cold. Wheat toast and coffee were good.

Short story: excellent prices for a less than decent place to sleep, but you certainly won't feel at home. If you are a tourist or in town for a fwe days of business, this alternative may work for you.

Stayed here with a group of 40 before embarking on a cruise. Considering the size of our delegation, check-in was a relative breeze, taking about 10 minutes in all. What struck me immediately was the certificate of excellence for 2012 given by tripadvisor proudly displayed in the front desk. Being a priority rewards member, I expected as much. So was I disappointed? You be the judge. Upon entering the room, you at once notice a pungent order (stink may be more appropriate). The interiors are SOOOO dated, with the paint in the walls either scratched or scraped, the table cover torn, the carpet with at least a dozen stains, the sofa worn out (the left arm rest broken beyond repair), the bathroom crammed with no amenities except toothbrush and comb. The airconditioning wasn't cool enough. Pillows were designated as "soft" or "firm" but you wouldn't really know the difference. Was it only by chance? Asking the other members of the group and hearing the same gripes made me believe it was not only me. Time for MAJOR renovation. And an award for consistently rating 4 from tripadvisor? Sorry, but not this time.

I would like to say a big thank you to staffs at reception especially mr clark niu, zhao and copany for their real attentive assistance fro their heart.
The reason is today, me and my wife (an elderly couple) checked out and request for assistance to help me bring our two tro;;ey bags to airport bus terminal, withouy hesitation, mr zhao and mr clark niu told one of his staff to assist us and ensure our bags being loaded into the bus before coming back to hotel.

Also this hotel is really value for ,omey for budget travellers with clean, comfortable room,
location next to shanghai train station where you can take subway, train amd long distance bus to various part of china. lots of convenience stores and food outlets around.

Will definitely stay in this hotel whenever i visit shanghai, and will recommend this hotel to all budget travellers,
good work n keep iy up

This hotel should not be in the Holiday Inn Express chain. It needs a fast remake. The location is quite good, just a five minute walk from the Shanghai Main Railway Station. Check in was slow, the stuff is not able to speak English, but they try hard. Room was smell, a combination of pee and mold from the a/c which worked well to cool the room. Even though it was near the train station, the double windows did not let the noice in. The toilet seat broke during our stay and it took them two days to fix the problem. The carpets on the floors are old and would never walk with bear foot on it. The breakfast is a serious joke - minimum choice with unflavored food, tasteless coffee and powdered juice. I would not recommend staying longer than one night in this hotel. At night in front of the hotel there were guys offering "sexy massage" and other illegal services. The walk to the underground is a good 10 minute walk, and 15 minutes walk to the Red Line Metro station. The only good side is the price of the hotel.

The hotel is situated on the north side of Shanghai Railway Station, & is next to the Shanghai Long Distance Bus Station. It's also conveniently located next to a building called the International Glasses City, where when you walk in, salespeople immediately harass you for your attention to buy their glasses. We stayed on the top floor, with a view across to the south side of the station. The rooms are spacious enough, clean enough, the previous review was quite accurate regarding all amenities. Towels are changed daily even when you don't ask for it. Breakfast can be missed, food is very basic, & I suspect a lot of their juices, teas, & juices have been watered down (the tatse is very bland). Staff are helpful enough.

There is a supermarket along Hengfeng Rd to cover your needs. Head north on the main road on the hotel left, it's called Nonggong Supermarket (has a fairly dated exterior).

Watch your bags & backpacks around the long distance bus station & the metro stations. Although you will note some police around, pickpocketers are rife. We saw a man trying to pick a girl's backpack from behind her. So carry your bags on the front. For warning the girl, the guy actually got all aggressive on us. Luckily we walked away unharmed. There are also a lot of touts in that area, so there's a high human traffic area. You'd have to put up with that whenever you walk to & fro the metro station to the hotel.

Spent one night before our cruise from Shanghai. Conveniently located near Shanghai Central station and metro Line 1. Our room at 17 th floor was very clean, spacious and in very good condition. Tea/coffee facility in room, few bottles with drinking water, free wi-fi and cable for internet. Rooms soundproof, so don't worry about railway station nearby - no noise at all.
Breakfast was not so good, because selection is poor and quality is very basic. This beakfast not for enjoyment, but to keep life in your body. But breakfast is free in this hotel, so here is no surcharge for it. You can freely miss it.
At reception you can find money exchange machine with no commission and good rate!
Receptionist was very kind to fix our questions about delayed luggage with airport.
Will stay again if need connect to train in Shanghai.
