We chose this dumpling restaurant because there were 30 people lined up waiting to order carry-out dumplings from it at the street level. Upstairs is the sit-down restaurant, with a minimal wait. The dumplings were absolutely delightful, and one bite explained the long line downstairs. The menu has English descriptions of each dish, so ordering is easy.
Make no mistake, this is where the locals eat. The atmosphere is akin to a school cafeteria, but who cares because the dumplings are so good.
And after dinner, enjoy the Yuyuan Garden with its pagoda roofs and miriad shops. Some shops even have flat rate, no bargain prices listed, and they are reasonable.

We went to the branch near the Yu Garden and the place can appear chaotic to non locals. There was a long line on the first floor for take out and we ended up eating on the second floor where there is a rather limited menu posted on the cashier booth. There are very limited number of tables and servers so the small room looks like it is in complete chaos. You need to order and pay first at the cashier booth then you are given some casino chips. We had to wait several minutes before we were able to hustle a table (shared) and some xiao long bao.

We started with tofu which was delicious but a bit too salty. The xiao long bao were very good and worth the wait. I think of this experience as a whole eating adventure that is worth doing once since there are other places in the city that you can get good (but probably not as good) xiao long bao in a more refined setting.

Aside from Din Tai Fung, this is considered the celebrated place to go for Xiao Long Bao. There was a long line at street level, so we went upstairs. It frankly wasn't worth it... service was indifferent and slow, we had to wait a while for the dumplings, and the price was almost double what it was on the street. I will say the dumplings are excellent. I would order downstairs on the street or get them from the branch in the First Food Hall on Nanjing South Road. Both times we went there, they told us they were out of the basic pork Xiao Long Bao so we ordered the equally good, but more expensive pork and crab dumplings.

This is a must for all Shanghai travelers - the legendary Nanxiang mantou dian produces the best xiaolong bao (Bun) in the country - one should not miss this very good taste xiaolong bao - always being imitated but never duplicated.

We always pay a bit extra to go upstairs and avoid the queues. Don't bother with the crab roe dumplings because the crab flavor is not prominent. The original is best. I wouldn't bother with their other dim sim either.
