We went here based on the Tripadvisor reviews. They make good dumplings but you can get Shanghai dumplings everywhere, even in southern California. I was hoping these would be far superior, but they are the same as anywhere else. I took a Tripadvisor reviewer's advice and ordered two steamers per person. Way too much food! We left a lot uneaten. Also, don't get the soup! Not good.

We had our first lunch in Shanghai at Jia Jia Tang Bao. We had read the TA reviews.

It was indeed local and exotic - english not spoken and a very simple English "menu". You line up, and when you arrive at the counter you decide. Not too much time to contemplate the choices due to impatient guests in the line and impatient staff.

We ended up with two types of dumplings - the pork and the crab/pork, as well as the egg and seaweed soup. The dumplings came after 5 minutes, and they were nice. Unfortunately, we missed the information that we had to buy the drinks at once, so no drinks before afterwards.

The soup was left behind....

Later, we tasted the dumplings at Din Tai Fung in Xiantiandi. These was much more expensive, but this restaurant has a larger selection and excellent quality.

Another recommendation from trust Trip Advisor that we had to try. Quick cab ride from the Hilton Shanghai to try some XLB, Shanghai style!

This place is definitely a locals place with no frills. Simple tables, stools, sauce and bring your own napkins. I love it already. If I wanted a fancy restaurant, I have a plethora to choose from at home in Los Angeles. They sell out quickly so make sure you go at least a couple hours before closing so you have choices. We didn't get to try the pork and shrimp but did try the pork. They were ok, nothing special. I was, however, thrilled that Yang's is across the street! We did what any self respecting foodie would do, finished at Jia Jia Tang Bao and went across the street! I love that the whole meal cost less than $20USD. See my review for Yang's.

Happy eating!

These dumplings were amazing! Expect to queue outside and to share a table. Make sure you get there early as they had run out of all the pork and shrimp flavoured dumplings! Definitely worth a visit if you are in Shanghai.

Expect queues if you're heading here for lunch! luckily, headed here around 1030am the line was kept at a minimum. You'll be sharing a table with strangers, and there is no english menu, so it'd help to study up their menu beforehand by checking out foodie websites! The pork and crab roe xiaolongbao are the best! Must eat with ginger and vinegar! Totally cheap too!
