My wife and I recently returned from an amazing trip to Fiji. We stayed at the Pearl South Pacific Resort which was a beautiful resort on a lovely white sand beach. We are adventure types that also like to travel comfortably so we chose a nice top rate hotel on the beach. The staff was excellent, the food was excellent and the rooms were beautiful. We spent a couple days lounging poolside in the lap of luxury and then experienced some of the adventures in the area. We went river rafting with Rivers Fiji. This I highly recommend!! We went Zip Lining with Zip Fiji. Fun, Fun and more Fun. Both of these operators were excellent. But I want to talk more about Aqua Trek, the on site dive operator. We dive all over the world and I have to say that Aqua Trek is the most professional dive operator I have ever encountered. The staff was top rate. They knew those reefs like the backs of their hands. They showed us all the little secret spots with all the unique critters. The soft coral diving in Beqa Lagoon was excellent. But our favorite dive experience ever was Aqua Trek's Shark Dive. They call it the Ultimate Shark Encounter and it really is. We had all eight species they claim to have on our dive!! Numerous enormous bull sharks, white tip, black tip, lemon sharks, nurse sharks, grey reef, silver tip. An 18 foot tiger shark (they call her Jaws) showed up 2 days out of 5 of our dive days. This was the most incredible dive experience we've ever had. We are still buzzing from it. After a week of diving with them, I learned a lot. The best part is that they have a sustainable tourism program where they have been successful in setting up a marine protected area and charge a per diver fee that is paid to a local village that owns the reef rights. This keeps people from fishing the area and protects the sharks. This also helps the village. They employ and train people from the village. I am a marine biologist and I pay close attention to this type operation. This is a top notch operator who is doing a lot to protect sharks world wide and to promote sustainable tourism in Fiji. They have won two international conservation and sustainable tourism awards in the last year. I was also impressed by the data I was shown by Brandon Paige, the mastermind behind the shark dive and the person who first implemented the marine park and sustainable tourism program over 10 years ago. He was incredibly knowledgeable and we discussed the improvement of the reef in the last ten years and the progress being made with the whole program. This is a small operator doing big things and I applaud them. If you are a diver who is looking to do all the best dives in the world. This is one for your list.
