the water falls and canyons are beautiful, really worth it. But the rafting is a bit flat and you mostly sit there and look at the landscape during the trip. The guides are friendly and know a great deal about the local history as they are from local villages so they will tell you some stories. Food was OK.

We booked from Denarau Island so some transport fee might have been included, but 400 F$ per person was a bit expensive, and you have to pay extra for the pictures at the end... Fiji mode.

Special thanks to whomever wrote the review in the pamphlets, I quote:
"...as I lay here writing this review, tears come to my eyes while I flip through my memories..." Seriously? I had like a 10 min laugh on that, is the owner of the company writing is own review using literature extracts?

That was a good experience, try it if you are around and can pay a little less.

We are Fiji based and took visitors from Australia on for the rafting trip on the upper Navua River.

GOOD.
The guides are friendly and try to inject fun into the experience.

Very child friendly, we took our 9 and 10 year old kids who can swim and there wasn't any concern for them.

The gorge is very scenic and there is substantial gorge areas where the patterns in the rocks create an awesome effects. It rained heavily while we were in the gorge and the waterfalls all came to life.

The company is employing local village guys through the agreements over the land use (for the company to use the river) and creating employment.

BAD.
Expensive. For between FJD$300-$400 per person this is a classic "empty the tourist wallet" machine. Even after paying multiples of the local weekly wage per head, they ask for another $40 for the CD with photos, and more than that again for the disc with the videos. At the start that the pictures will be available, so you don't take as many photos of your own, and feel obliged to get the disks at the end. Take your own photos. Unfortunately Tourist taxes are the lifeblood of the Fiji economy that they are addicted to.

The white water experience is very tame. Not much in the way of big rapids and we went down the river when it was quite high. The kids even said they weren't concerned by the river, and it was their first rafting trip.

The company is not interested in supporting anyone else to use the river. They have locked in an exclusive agreement with the local landholders that allows them to keep the prices up. You cannot just use the river for a relaxing paddle if you bring your own kayak.

The river is not as clean as it should be. Logging in the area produces brown dirty run-off which fouls the river and leaves it dirty. Incoming rivers to the side come in crystal blue creating an interesting effect as the two bodies of water mix.

Hi PR,

Thanks for sharing your perspectives. We’re glad to be able to comment on a few of your points. Consider:

- We agree that our prices seem high, especially for a family of 4 or more on vacation. However, we can cite the incredibly rough jungle road’s toll on vehicles, the rain forested canyon’s tough treatment of our equipment, and the hotel commission structure (where most of our bookings originate) as reasons our prices need to be high. Not to mention that Fiji’s Value Added Tax and Service Turnover Tax of 17% comes right off the top. Note that we do routinely organize no-cost trips for the local people, along with school children from all over Fiji, to experience why the Upper Navua is worth preserving.

- FJ$33 per guest goes directly to 11 land-owning families and villages and an additional percentage is committed to the Land Trust Board to administer our lease and distribute support for the resource.

- It is a great family trip and appropriate for kids down to 8 years. It’s difficult to find thrilling whitewater in Fiji, unless you’re chasing the heavy rainstorms and the flood flows they create on rivers all over the island. We try to be clear that this run is class II+, and is more about the scenery than an adrenaline rush.

- It sounds like there was some high water when you visited, and localized storms can cause run-off that is muddy in some cases. Note that the river generally is clear except for some days during the rainy season.

Thanks again,

Rivers Fiji

This was a fabulous day! Joe is a legend and we had such a great time. We (minus my husband) have rafted in waterfalls in NZ last year which was much more "adventurous" - ie (7 metre waterfalls) - this was still quite challenging but we felt safe and had time to really admire and enjoy the magnificent scenery - quite unbelievable. My husband had not done this and it was a great family adventure and also lots of fun - pushing each other off and swimming and water bombing the other rafts. It was a wonderful day and truly gives you an opportunity to experience parts of Fiji that are not accessible by road. It was truly majestic. I would do it agin next week!

It was quite some time ago when I took this trip but it is one of the high points of all my travels. Not being an adventurous person, I was a bit anxious about doing this but I am very glad I did. The rapids were class 3 or less - and as I recall there was only one or two sections at class 3. The scenery is spectacular with shear cliffs on either side of the river and frequent waterfalls. The worst part of this experience is getting to and from the river which entails a pretty long bumpy ride, but it was worth it. When I return to Fiji, this will definitely be an a do-over for me.
