“The embodiment of heaven.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 7, 2013

My wife and I stayed at this Fijan gem for a week in January 2013 and it was absolutely gorgeous.
We are both avid travellers and have a weakness for well-organised and clean accommodation, if not, luxurious.
If you're looking for a time to truly unwind, enjoy a fun-and refreshing 80's classic version of a cocktail or an ice-cold Fiji Beer whilst reading a novel, well organised day trips and a casual atmosphere then this is your slice of heaven.

We experienced a change of management and the new frontman, Max. He and his family have been great hosts to us and accommodated our each and every need. And so does the rest of the staff who's names I cannot all recall… If you like diving and maritime life I can't think of any better spot. Since the (petit) island itself is located not too far off land near the main river that runs through Viti Levu (the "Mainland") there is great maritime activity e.g. beautiful fish and coral within little distance of Toberua Island.
It seems to be a great place for those with young children as well since you can literally walk around the island within 10 minutes. Besides daily optional activities including diving, pier-or boat fishing, reef-golf (great to master your speed and handling your chipper') There is also a pool-table, ping-pong table next to the bar and pool, which is excellent to chill out in during the occasional warm tropical rainstorms during the wet-season with a perfectly chilled Fiji Beer. Absolute bliss. Ah yes… And then there is the "spa". Well, it's a spa without the sauna, turkish bath etc. But the massage was fantastic. Whilst getting a massage it's easy dozing off listening to the constant breaking of the low waves when the tide comes in…
Dinner is served three times a day, starting off with the eminent and fresh breakfast consistent of local fruit, self-made delicious cereal and the usual Western coffee, eggs, bacon etc. After breakfast you will be offered the menu for the 3-course lunch, which was very good(and healthy) throughout our entire stay. Thumbs up! After lunch you will be offered the menu for dinner. They don't ask immediately after lunch but later through just tracking where you are and then handing you the menu. And if you happen to be in your well-outfitted, traditionally designed and clean Bule (cabin) they will gently knock on your door… Again, great food. Don't expect a michelin star restaurant but expect dishes that seem to have been prepared with alotta love. And what is better then being outside when enjoying your dinner and occasionally looking up and see a beautiful bright starlit sky.

Mind you. This isn't a Hilton, Meridien, Standard, W-Hotel or whatever but a small business that is family run. So expect that what you can expect from a loving hospitable family.

With best regards and happy travels,

P.s.
Also try the local drink CAVA. It's all sorts of spectacular!

Gidon Krot.

Just had a thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable 7 night visit on Toberua. Don't let getting there deter you from this jewel - the tiny atr42 flight from Nadi to Suva & the subsequent boat trip to the island (with views that I can only compare to the Indian backwaters) are half the fun. From the minute you're greeted on the island by the wonderful staff, you'll realize why the guests return time after time (some there had visited the island 8 times).
Facilities: Mostly impeccable. It's not 5star luxury, but it's what I would call island luxury. The pool was always perfectly maintained, and there is a real effort to use natural materials all throughout to maintain the island aesthetic - and it's pulled off brilliantly down to the details.
We were in bure 12 which seemed to be amoung the best in terms of privacy as it borders the staff village wall on one side. Very comfortable and spacious. The oceanfront garden was brilliant, with two sun loungers and a hammock.
The Staff: Can't say enough good things. They are the kind of warm & friendly that automatically makes Westerners skeptical, but you quickly dispell any doubts of their genuineness. For me that happened as soon as I heard Pita's laugh :) In general, the island works like a well-oiled machine, which is particularly evident in the planning and execution of the meals, which were flawless nearly every single time. (There is a meal plan that came out to about $1000 AUD pp/pw, but after eating out in Denarau, you'll appreciate what a bargain this is, esp considering the effort it must take in getting ingredients out there.)

The benefits of being on this small island abound. Amoung them, not having to worry about keys (or security in general, doesn't get safer than this), not having to carry cash (only one bar, one restaurant and everything goes on your bure tab), no tv to distract you from actually relaxing, and the personal attention. It also facilitates a lot of interaction amoung guests (and staff alike), which I noticed that not all guests were particularly comfortable with, but the bure's provide reasonable privacy to spend alone time on your own beach if you aren't up to chatting. For a small island it also packs a pretty big punch - array of spa treatments (recommend the Island Journey), food options, wine menu etc.

Left yesterday and missing it already. You can't go wrong with this one.

Room Tip: Bure 12 seemed to offer the most privacy

Due to unforeseen circumstances, I ended up traveling to Toberua on my own instead of with my brother. I was quite apprehensive about a week on my own, but it ended up being perfect. Toberua is the kind of place where you can do as much or as little as you like, and interact with others or keep completely to yourself. The staff were so kind and friendly. There are only 15 bures on the island so it is nice and intimate. The bathrooms and rooms were lovely, though you will most certainly encounter some geckos in each. A fellow guest who had been in the travel industry for many years said it was the best food he'd ever seen at a Fiji resort, and they are also flexible with dietary requirements. The reservations team was very accommodating when I had to leave a night early. There were only a couple of downsides: the wifi was down due to a cyclone (no fault of theirs), but they charged for use of their office computer. The beach directly surrounding the island was not mind-blowing in terms of clear water/white sand, but it was still really really lovely and they do a day trip out to postcard-worthy waters. Occasionally the heat in the bures made it hard to fall asleep. The few encounters with sea snakes were a little unnerving, but the staff were really swift in throwing them back in to the ocean, and I just kept the doors to my bure closed to make sure no snakes snuck in...
Apart from that, everything was beyond perfect. The diving was incredible, the staff were magnificent, the isolation was beautiful, and I left happy and relaxed. Thank you for a WONDERFUL week. Will be back and will stay longer!

Toberua Island Resort was the perfect location for our honeymoon. Many resorts advertise with photoshopped images and false promises but Toberua never failed to deliver. It was like stepping into a post card. An ideallic location with warm and friendly staff that made it their personal mission to please. We could do as little or as much as we liked. The diving and fishing was exceptional, the meals were delicious and the service was amazing. We felt completely at home on Toberua and hope to return before too long.

We had an unforgetable 5 night stay recently. What can I say that hasnt already been said?

Our accomodation was wonderful from a really comfortable bed to the semi outdoor bathroom. I couldnt think of any improvements when asked.

The food was divine and served either inside or outside, depending on the weather. Outside evening meals were particularly good as lamps and candles were lit, tablecloths and silverware, the water only feet away and a beautiful sunset. Everyday the staff come around and find you wherever you are a few hours before the meal and ask you to choose from the menu..sort of made you feel cared for and special and also meant there was no long wait for lunch or dinner. Your choices just appeared in front of you as the meal progressed. The fish was really good. In fact I was tempted to ask the chef for some recipes or hints as the food was so good.

There were a lot of activities or you could just totally relax ( as we did) and swim near your room (the water here is tidal but the daily "whats happening" sheet thats is delivered every evening lets you know high and low tide times) or in the pool, laze on the hammocks or sun lounges or visit the spa. I mentioned to the lovely lady doing my massage that she had the best office in the world and she totally agreed. Louvre windows on 3 sides let in a lovely breeze ( no need for A/C as everyother spa I have been to has) and gives views of the water whilst remaining totally private.

Getting to and from the Island is well organised. After a short trip from Suva airport its a scenic 30 minutes boat ride. You are even given an infomation guide so that you know what you are seeing and the history behind it. This is what makes Toberua special..every small detail has been covered.

But the best part and it is what really makes your stay is the staff. Such friendly, happy and helpful people. From the lovely ladies who clean your room to the restaurant staff and of course Zac in the bar and the boys in the band. They should be very proud of themselves as they provided some of the best customer service I have ever experienced and made it look so easy and such fun. A joke is never far away.

My partner and I travel regularly and whilst we usually enjoy everywhere we stay this is only the second place I would return to as the experience was so amazing. So yes next Janaury we will be returning for a slightly longer stay this time as we missed a few things such as the village visit.

Stayed for 5 nights. Should have stayed for 10. Excellent destination. Not a bad thing to say. Have booked for 2013. Staff were friendly. Food was excellent. Diving instructors were knowledgeable. Day trip to our own island for a picnic was magnificent.

My family (2 adults and three teenagers) holidayed at Toberua two days after the cyclone and thoroughly enjoyed our holiday. While we understand that the cyclone caused water to cover most of the island resulting in a huge cleanup, by the time we arrived (48hours later) to the credit of Shelley and the staff, the resort was pristine and beautiful. Shelley and the staff were welcoming, thoughful and extremely helpful throughout our stay. We arrived exhausted but after enjoying 5 days of friendly people, delicious meals and exciting adventures (sailing, snorkelling, scuba-diving, fishing path-putting and .....) we reluctantly departed happy and rested - our only regret that we didn't stay longer. The accomodation was beautiful and worked well for a family with three older children. Our children were always happily occupied as there was plenty to keep them busy (sailing, snorkelling, scuba, swimming, put-put, billiards, table tennis etc) which meant that I could read my book ! We'll be back soon !
