“Unique, Romantic, Totally Relaxing!”
Reviewed October 27, 2013

This resort made the long trip from Chicago to Fiji worth it! My husband and I have done extensive traveling in the Caribbean but Qamea Resort was the most unique place we have ever gone. This "adults only" resort provides a combination of privacy and socializing in a setting that feels unreal. Our day usually began with a couple of dives. (We thought the diving here was better than the Great Barrier Reef!) The sites are so close that we were done and ready for lunch by 1:00! On days we did not dive, we took part in a waterfall hike or just went snorkeling. The snorkeling right off the resort is amazing. But what makes this resort so special is the PEOPLE--both employees and guests. We met people from across the U.S., New Zealand, Wales, and Canada! Every night we traded stories over cocktails before dinner. The employees welcome you from the moment you step foot onto the island! Many thanks to Lusia, Tania, David, Erik, Louisa, Lurita, Percy, William, Bubba, Katarina, and all the others working behind the scenes to make our week at Qamea special.

Room Tip: If you go here, stay in one of the oceanfront Bure's--worth it! You are only 20 feet from the w...

The short version:

For a honeymooning couple of a couple that wants to leave the rest of the world behind, look no further. World class diving, open air 4-star dining, a location that looks like a screensaver, and I have never been to a place that is more relaxing. All in all, Qamea is the ultimate corner of the world to escape to.

The extended version:

Went there for our honeymoon and here's how it went down. We flew from LAX to NAN, it's an 11 hour flight that lands at 5 in the morning. (Do what you need to do to sleep on the plane) We then hopped an island hopper to Taveuni where we were met by Eddie, Qamea's Formula 1 trained van driver. (Eddie was our first impression of Qamea. He is a funny man and the drive to the boat completely set the tone) After a 20 minute wooden rollercoaster ride, we caught a 10 minute boat ride across the channel to Qamea. When we arrived we were met by Lusia on the beach. After the grand tour we met back up with our bags at the room. We had one of the 2 Honeymoon Bure's. Comfortable bed, outdoor rock shower, our own hottub, daybed on the beach, hammock on the porch, and the only sound you hear are the waves gently rolling up on the beach. After we settled in, we went to the activity board, signed up for a few things, had a drink, and mingled with a few of the staff and other guests. Speaking of the staff, you will not find a better one. There are a few other reviews on here about how they make you feel like family and believe me, they do. Over the next few days we did a few activities, but what we did most of all was absolutely nothing. We had some drinks, joked with other guests who, by the end of the trip, felt like brothers and sisters, and just RELAXED. By the end of our trip we had only one regret....that we had only planned 5 days at Qamea instead of 10.

On most of my trips I am ready to go home, but on this one.....I felt like I was already there.

TIPS

-Take pants and a jacket. It can get chilly at night if it is raining or windy
-Take bug spray with a high DEET content
-Go on the waterfall hike. Percy is funny, cool, makes lots of jokes, a real joy to hang out with
-We didn't dive, but only because we didn't think about it til the last day. Do the Discover Scuba. Our friend had never dove and he loved it
-Qamea is the raniest island in Fiji, do not expect it to be a sunny beach all the time. It rained every day for at least a couple hours, but we expected it and enjoyed it. Having lunch in an open air bure in the rain is fantastic
-Go to the village and see the real Fiji
-Spend at least a week there
-Have a massage. I've had a massage before but none in an open air hut in the jungle
-Take anti-itch cream for the inevitable mosquito bites
-Take a waterproof camera to take with you on kayak trips, the waterfall hike, diving or snorkeling, and don't forget the floating wrist strap
-Get to know Bubba, that dude is awesome
-And last but not least, learn how to say Bula (Boo-lah) you will be saying it A LOT

Room Tip: The Civa Bure is at the far end of the beach. Has the most privacy, set back in the trees and had z...

With only 15 well appointed bures (outside showers included) this luxe without the pretension resort and spa was an absolute treat. There was so much quality packed into the one place, it's hard to know where to start. The staff were incredibly warm, addressed us all by name, and made us feel as though we had been part of the place forever. The massages were simply some of the best we have ever had - seriously. With deft fingers and an elbow or two, the knot behind my shoulder blade didn't stand a chance. The staff have been trained by european therapists, and only pass after stringent training and tests. The food in Fiji has always been a major disappointment for me...not here. Food is fresh - and very well executed. Our 17 year old rower-in-training who eats a little more than me (!) had plenty to eat...probably due to the nutrient density of the food... no fillers, no padding, just great, tasty, fresh food. Whilst there, the staff were undergoing training under a chef flown in from New Zealand for the past 10 weeks. The gardens were beautifully tended. It was quiet and serene. Whilst I was there with my very well travelled 17 and 15 year olds, who were happy to chill, this is pretty much a place for couples. If you want a place with lots of water sports and activities, this is not the place for you. There was a daily activity offered - local village visits and the like. We did paddle boarding, and scuba diving....there was a sail boat too. The PADI certified dive centre was again a place of very well grounded and trained staff, ready to alleviate any anxiety. The diving was incredible. The reef is literally right off the beach...pop on a snorkel and fins or go out a few metres further and be treated to some of the best reef areas I have ever seen - the array of coral and sea life was amazing. Go further afield if you have the time. you won;t be disappointed. So, If you are looking for a place with attention to detail, supreme service, great massage, incredible food, some of the best service staff around, with a laid back vibe this is the place for you.Do a little bit of something...or nothing at all. Rest and rejuvenation seems to be the top priority of this beautiful place.

Room Tip: All super!

Words escape me ... this is truly paradise and just what we needed after a very busy start to 2013.
From the moment our toes touched the sand everything about Qamea exceeded our expectations. We spend the most memorable family time here which is a memory that will last forever.
Everyone at the resort is amazing...We were pivileged to be part of this big family. Nothing was too much trouble... and they remembered our names... it didnt matter if it was the gardner they all knew who we were ... it was so special.

Spending an hour a day in their jungle spa is definitely what the doctor ordered... we were enlighted with this experience and even had a massage on the beach listening to the waves upon the shore... truly stunning.

The guided snorkeling trip was amazing... and the turtles had a ball around us so special. We also enbarked on the Village and School tour, again making us feel so special.

The Friday night Meke dance was amazing.... such an energy about these people and their spirit is so full of love and laughter. The food was fresh and delicious...

Thank you again Belinda and Andrew and your team for making our precious holiday such a memorable one... I have made a promise to myself that I will be back every year to recharge my batteries and enjoy the amazing experience all over again!!!!

Room Tip: All Bures and Villas a located perfectly within the resort

Everything we've read about Qamea Resort completely exceeded our expectations. My Husband and I spent 10 nights in the Royal Beach House, Babale (pronounced M-Bale) and had the most amazing time. The staff completely made the trip. From the minute we got off the boat, every staff member remembered our names and made us feel like family. Being on our honeymoon, we were greeted by Andrew and Belinda, the resort's managers, who brought us to our room and provided us with a complimentary bottle of champagne, two sulus, and a 30-minute complimentary couple's massage which we enjoyed the next day.

The activities we engaged in were a Sunset Cruise, guided snorkle tour (complimentary), Honeymoon beach (where we were dropped off on a private beach for 3 hours including lunch and a bottle of champagne), Village tour, and a Waterfall Tour. Our favorite was definitely the Waterfall tour, however be advised that this was not an easy hike! We toured up a mountain to view 2 waterfalls and were able to jump off a 20 foot cliff of the first waterfall into the pool.

Snorkling on the island is like nothing we've ever experienced! We were able to walk right off our back yard and into a completely different world. We thought about diving, however after talking to other visitors who did diving informed us that you see the same kinds of things only at a deeper level, so we stuck to snorkling the entire time.

Every night before dinner, The Band Boys engaged us in the tradition of Kava, where we sat in a circle while they played and sang and handed out cups of Kava, made from the group Kava root. This is their version of Alcohol, however it mostly tastes like potato water and makes your tongue tingle a little bit.

The Sunset Cruise was beautiful and we definitely recommend it! Bubba took us out on a boat for about an hour, played the guitar and sang like an angel. The boat held 4 couples, provided us with food, wine, champagne and beers. Bubba was by far our most impressive staff member. On our last day, he shimmied up a palm tree and cut down about 6 coconuts that he cut open with a machete and gave us to drink. He also scooped out some of the meat and educated us on the different between green and brown coconuts.

My only complaint would be the weather, being that we went during their springtime and staying in the jungle, there was a lot of rain, but we didn't let that ruin our trip! Be sure to bring bug spray with you because there are mosquitos (fortunately not big ones!). I also got eaten up by sand fleas a lot, so be cautious of those buggers.

Lastly, hats off to the chef because the food was phenomenal! We typically had our lunches delivered by room service because we didn't want to miss out on any sun. We didn't have a bad meal our entire stay. The turn-down staff bring The Qamea Times to the room every night so you know what the following day's menu includes, along with activities for the day and the tides. Staying in the Royal Beach House was incredible because we had our own plunge pool, daybed, hammock, hot tub, and large outdoor deck with chaise lounges.

I highly recommend this trip to anyone looking for a quite getaway in paradise or for those looking for adventure. The staff and locals alike make you feel at home and live a simple lifestyle. If it weren't for the lengthy travel and cost we would visit this resort every year!

Hoping to return some day!

Room Tip: Royal Beach Houses Babale or Qio are definitely the best options!!

My husband and I felt welcome the minute we were picked up on the shores of Taveuni to take a short boat ride to Qamea. After over 26 hours of travel time, we stepped on to the shores of a real paradise, and I felt so grateful that it was going to be shared with us.
The staff was truly the most accommodating and friendly I have ever experienced. Bubba, Percy, William, Mariah, Eric, Cia,Captain Maku,Charlotte and everyone else made us feel completely at home. Jerome, the chef, is a real gift in the kitchen. Every meal was prepared fresh, delicious and beautiful. The Boys in the Band added real flair nightly with their strumming and singing and the sharing of Fijian customs and traditions. Everything was very clean with fresh flowers scattered about and the grounds were perfectly manicured.
We enjoyed the activities that were offered. My husband found the diving to be spectacular and relaxed. One activity that should be offered more than once a week is the "Circle Qamea". Spending a half day on the blue waters of the Pacific, snorkeling in areas with amazing colors of fish and coral not to mention the picnic on the isolated beach with food prepared on a flat hot grill was a true highlight. (um...Percy... Did we eat all that???) Another favorite event was just before dinner. It seemed that many residents would meander to the bar area. As the early evening progressed the chairs found their place in a huge circle and everyone shared stories and laughter while listening to the band. The bar keepers and servers added to the jovial nature of the evening. As a guest we felt we could be as private or as social as we wanted... and that trend was shared by most of the guests.
Qamea is a quiet, beautiful gem in the middle of the Pacific with the most generous, kind people. Because of you, we will always remember our stay in your paradise. VINAKA to you ALL!!

Room Tip: We stayed in a honeymoon bure and loved it. All burrs are just a few steps from dining and the beach...
