I came for 5 days and was so seduced by the location, views both over and under water, friendly staff, great food that I ended up staying over a month. The journey there is well worth the trip and partly why it remains a hidden gem. On arrival you are immediately made to feel part of the family which carries on into the small hours with kava sessions dominating the nights. The staff are on hand all the time thinking up crazy activities for you to do, or just there for a lovely chat. You can really get to know the real Fiji by staying here especially if you make a village trip with one of the staff where you can see volley ball or rugby competitions.

There is loads to do, and what makes it more special is that a lot of the activities are free. You can do snorkeling just out front and surf kayaking all for free. Even the activities you do pay for are at low rates, just covering the fuel prices. Or like me, you can just spend days lazing in hammocks. The food is amazing and a complete bargain at the price. The whole place is excellent value for money.

Go to Maqai. I couldn't recommend it more!

Maqai was much more than I expected. We originally chose Maqai because of its location and our budget. But the low rates were no indication of how great the accomodations at Maqai were. We could practically step into the ocean from our eco-bure. The food was some of the best we've had in Fiji. Its the type of place where you can sit out on a private white sand beach all day, or go snorkeling, waterfall jumping and scuba diving all day. The staff is very friendly. And they did our Laundry! Great stuff.

Loved it. Been twice. Would go a third time. Great rooms, great food, great scenery, great staff. What I really like about Maqai is the relaxed atmosphere. You can make your own cup of tea in the kitchen at any time, you can ask to go on whatever activity you like, or just sit and chat with staff.

Just getting to Maqai is a worthwhile adventure via the (free!) motorboat from Taveuni to Qamea. Meeting the crew who run the place was the first joy - laid back but attentive and caring and really keen to show everyone a good time. If you like to socialise with others, this is your place. The second joy - my room: canvas sided beach bungalow 3-4 meters from the beach, *real* mattress, attached toilet/shower - this was the 'dorm room'. Third joy - the food! lots of it and oh so tasty (still dreaming about the Maqai signature dish - you must give cooking classes guys!!).

The other joys: snorkeling the coral RIGHT off the beach. Village tour to meet the chief. Jungle hikes. Kava ceremonies with guests and crew. If I could surf I'd be dreaming about those breaks. And best of all: Nanuku. If the seas are rough it'll be a boatride you won't forget. Nanuku itself is a bit of heaven I never thought I could see on budget: deserted island, white sand, massive coral, loads of fish...

The world is a big place to explore, but I WILL be back to Maqai.

Expecting nothing, I was totally blown away by this place - don't expect room service or linen napkins, it's an eco-lodge and is therefore basic - the service they provide is outstanding, yet it is disguised within the uber-friendly communal feel of the place (from the get go you are invited to wander into the lodge's kitchen and make your own cups of tea - often for some of the staff members who are busy having a scrabble match/guitar-off/kava session). The meals provided by the girls literally kick butt. Especially if you're lucky enough to be around for Julie's cooking - everything is from scratch, and lo' and behold - you can lose weight at Maqai because you're eating that healthily (and sweating half your body weight out during the daily volleyball matches). The bures (safari tents) are totally decent - cleaned every day, and are exquisitely close to the ocean, so when you leave (probably crying) everything feels so quiet at night. And the activities, weather permitting, are tailor-made (just tell them what you fancy, and you *will* be accommodated) and awesome. The trip to Nanuku, a deserted, private island which is paradise on earth (there will be pictures on here - i suggest you find them!) will stay with me forever. Go visit the village if it's offered, talk to the people, sit with the chief (careful on the kava there - it's potent!) and absorb a REAL Fijian experience in a REAL Fijian community. I visited as part of a world travel, and it is one of the only destinations within a place I've already visited that I will be going back to. You fall in love here, with everything about it. GO
