We originally booked for 7 nights but extended to 9 nights because we were having such a great time. Transferring the extra nights from Tuvununu Lodge was easy being sister resorts.
Cathy and all the staff were wonderful, Big Tony, Rosie, Charlie, Sala, Par, Balei, Matau and Tex just to name a few went out of there way to welcome us as part of the Maqai family. Nothing was too much trouble, within reason. Kava every night with live music was a great way to meet everyone. if you want 5 star look somewhere else, but you won't have as much fun.
The village trip was really interesting, at no time did we feel like tourists, they are just friendly people, there were no pushy souvenir traders trying for the hard sell, just quiet island life.
Fiji time rocks, it does take a while to get used to but it's the only way to go for a relaxing holiday. We had a special night on Nanuku Island with friends we had made at Maqai, what an amazing place, just like staying on your own desert island.
My wife and i were very sad to leave and will hopefully be back soon. Till we meet again, love to all our friends there.

I was lucky enough to spend almost a month up at Maqai during December, 2012.
This place is beautiful, a real alternative to the trodden track in Fiji - you'll find the "real" fijians up here, whether it be working at Maqai itself, or the happy kids and families in the surrounding villages.
At Maqai itself the days fly by, if you're lucky the waves are pumping, if that's not your thing, fishing, volleyball, music - it's all there. Friendly staff that make you feel so welcome, and with Charlie and his crew pumping out beautiful food from the kitchen - it doesn't get much better!
Bamboo Backpackers in Nadi is the place to start this adventure, with a stop in the lodge in Taveuni on the way - all up a well organised and unique operation

I'll be back Maqai and Bamboo - see you guys all over again in October, until then take care and keep smiling..

Samwise

Room Tip: Bungalows on the beach - wicked!

We only spent one night at Maqai, but it was the perfect end to our 3 weeks in Fiji! I really liked our tent (with flush toilet and shower), its position 25 feet from the beautiful calm cove and lapping waves. Simon rocks with his music (and spear fishing) and Tony rocks with his Kava!!! Oh yea and Rosie rocks with her incredible cooking! In short, the entire staff, locale, culture, environment and setting, I found so relaxing and uplifting it was the perfect send off to our Fiji adventure!!! I recommend it highly to adventure travelers on a budget and to families who want to share a beautiful experience with their kids!!!

This is paradise! If you are going to Fiji and just have time to visit one place, you should go here! Pay a bit more to stay in the bungalows on the beach, it is well worth the extra costs, the dorm is a bit crowded and there is a lot of mosquitos. So stay on the beach instead, much better! The people that work there are so nice, helpfull and friendly, just like your extended family. And the FOOD!!! The food is amasing! Best food I ever had on Fiji was here! So just go, you will not regret it!

Bula!!!
We stayed in Maqai in November 2012. We were due to stay for 1 or 2 nights and ended up staying for 4. We would have stayed longer if our flight home wasn't calling!!!
All the staff are really friendly and welcoming and you soon become part of the family. The food (Thank you Rosie) is absolutely delicious! You get 3 huge meals a day - there's no going hungry here. All the food is locally sourced and fresh.
The staff make sure you are having a great time whether it's snorkelling, kayaking, ping pong (challenge Cathy to a game), volleyball, Fijian lessons, village trips and fire shows. They also organised a trip to Nanuku which blew our minds - It's beautiful and definitely worth the bumpy ride!
In the evenings, enjoy a family gathering around the kava bowl, guitar playing and a singalong included =)
The accommodation is basic but clean and comfortable - more than what you would expect for the money. After 3 months away this was probably the best value for money we experienced - the best food, the best staff, the most fun. Once our wallets have recovered from a 3 month beating we will be back!!! Much love to Cathy, Rosie, Rafa, Pela, Do and Simon

Bula to everyone at Maqai Beach! It has been a little while since we visited Maqai (October 2012) and I am sorry for not writing a review sooner, but I wanted to write it from the heart.

Maqai is a place like no other, from the moment you step off the boat and place your toes on to the beautiful sand you are serenaded by the most incredible people that make you feel so incredibly welcome.

We stayed for 6 nights, but it felt much longer than that. The accommodation was perfect for us, yes, it isn't a 5 star resort, but that wasn't what we wanted, we would much rather have simple accommodation and be surrounded by beautiful people, eat delicious food and leave truly feeling like you have an extended family than be in some 5 star resort.

I have never felt such a connection to people in my life before, I love them all. Many laughs were made, many tears were shed (due to leaving). I can't put in to words how I feel about the people here. It truly is the staff (I didn't look at them like staff, I look at them like friends and family) that make this place so unique and so very very special.

My partner surfed, we snorkelled and saw sharks and turtles, went on a jungle walk, talked and talked, stayed up every single night until the end of the kava sessions....these were the best times. Plenty of walks.

The food is incredible, I am vegetarian and not once did I feel that my food was an after thought, absolutely delicious food.

The ONLY negative point we have and we feel the need the need to write it, because how can things improve if you don't know... Was the transfers....in both directions. We missed our first night at Maqai, even though our flight arrived on time and were collected at the airport but we spent what felt like hours at their sister accommodation in Taveuni, waiting around for someone to take us to to the port and in the end by the time this was arranged we went in to the car, went all the way to the port, only to be told it was too dark and we would have to turn back, by this point, we were both exhausted and felt very sad.

On our return transfer when we arrived back at the port on Taveuni, there was noone there to take us to our second accommodation, even though it had been arranged and paid for, the boat captain ended up flagging a car down, which had passengers already and we had all of of our luggage and he made us pay extra money to him! He was awful! He made up lots of lies like a truck carrying cattle had fallen off a bridge (which we later found out did not happen at all). The transfers were a big issue for us and really none of those things should have happened, particularly as we had planned our holiday well in advance. This is the only thing we feel needs improving.

My only other thing, is I wish the 'staff' could have eaten with us!

I would like to end this review on a very positive note...Maqai is a truly special place and will forever have a special place in our hearts for we are now expecting a baby, which was conceived in Maqai! (We had a miscarriage last hear and that was why we came on holiday). Our baby is due in July 2013.

I hope one day soon we can come back with our baby!

By the way Cathy....Jamie and I are getting married! He proposed on Christmas Day! :-)

Love to you all, Samantha and Jamie x

Bula vinaka and thank you for the heart warming review. The Maqai team is really happy to read your description and send their big congratulations for the engagement and the Maqai baby! Our transfer team also offer a big apology for the issues mentioned. In the rare case of rough weather and/or super-low tides, we cannot send our transfer boat out to sea, and thus we are lucky to offer the facilities of our sister lodge on Taveuni, Tuvununu Lodge, to use as our 'Maqai terminal'. As for the return transfers, we were upset to hear about this but have subsequently taken steps to improve our efficiency of our resort transfers. We love and appreciate all your feedback and hope to see you back here one day! Loloma from Qamea. The Maqai Tribe.

We originally reserved to rent Nanuku Island (managed by Maqai) for a month long honeymoon but ended up spending close to a week at Maqai do a cyclone the prohibited us from traveling. Our time at Maqai was wonderful. We stayed in a beach front burre, with is a partially wood and partially canvas cabin with a wonderful hammock out front hanging just above the water at high tide. One of the reviewers here mentioned that they felt like they "crashed the party" but they may have missed the point. Within a day we became friends with all of the other guests and even the staff and became "part of the party." Everyone comes together for meals, Kava, beer, ping pong, guitar, and games in a community area.

I highly recommend Maqai on all levels.
