AMAZING STAY I HAVE HAD IN MAQAI BEACH!!!!

I booked for 3 nights but I extend over 2 weeks.
The place is amazing, just in front of the nicest beachfront I ever slept, nice beach and better snorkel!!
The people.... is the best!!! super friendly and funny!!! I spent very nice time with Vale, Pela, Tony, Dex, Alicia, Ellenoa, Pete,Rafa ...They will welcome you with very nice BULA song and goodbye with another song all the staff around you.
The food is just amazing!!! Rossie and Lucie are very very good cooks!!! All fresh food, and some self garden veggies!!
I did snorkel, kayaking, spire fishing, kayak fishing, boat fishing, SURF(just 5 min by boat), have kava every night, sing every day playing any of 3 guitars or ukelele, visit the village (awesome xperience!) and the friendliest people ever, play voley, play touch rugby, go for coconuts, ping pong, learn to play ukelele,...and learn about Fijians and their language
They made me feel like at home after 10 months travelling, so I'm coming back my next holidays for sure!!!!
after this fijian trip I have another point of view of the life, you will learn a lot with them

VINAKA VAKALEVU FOR EVERYTHING FRIENDS!!! I LOVE YOU!

The appeal of the rustic, affordable place was great, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The location and views were fabulous. However, we arrived during low tide and had to carry our luggage (including large bags of SCUBA gear) across the rocks for a good 20-minute hike. One employee helped, but it was a treacherous hike. We didn't have hot water or a working sink in our place the entire time, so we had to brush our teeth in the outdoor shower. When the storms came in, it seemed that our little shack with plastic tarp walls would fall down. Also, there were so many mosquitoes, and the mosquito ring didn't seem to help. When we arrived, it felt like we had crashed a party...guests knew each other well and had stayed there for some time. There is nowhere to eat but there, so you have to rely on what they make. I don't eat meat, which was a big part of what they cooked, so my meals were essentially eggs and bread. By the end of the week, I couldn't wait to get some real food. Granted, my friend and I did not go there to surf...surfers seemed to love the place. We went to SCUBA dive, and we were both quite disappointed and felt like we were camping. If your idea of a great time is backpacking and roughing it, then this is the perfect place for you. Otherwise, enjoy the quaint nearby village of Taveuni.

Room Tip: Don't go there when they are fully booked or you may end up like we did in the one room that did...

Bula Miss Sunshinediver,

thank you for the invaluable feedback and vinaka for drawing attention to the remarkable beauty of Qamea! You are right, almost all our guests love it here, but our Maqai team has had a good shake up about the issues raised in your review and we are all very sorry that your experience was less than wonderful.

Your extreme low tide arrival was very unfortunately timed. We always recommend a brief low tide stopover/relax in our stunningly scenic Taveuni guest house to ensure against this happening. For our late afternoon check-ins, we are very occasionally forced to make a walk-in around the bay. For our guests who have special requests, our staff are always happy to help in every way they possibly can. Our location is amazingly mossie free for most of the year, but for the few weeks that they are around, we always offer hanging bed nets upon request- they work very well. Our vegetarian is meal plan is normally wonderful with a supply of fresh goodies from our large tropical organic on-site garden. Our kitchen staff have had a shake up about your review! Our water supply comes from what must be one of the most pure spring sources in the world, fresh from our virgin ecosystem. Sometimes this spring supply causes problems for our bathroom taps, very sorry about that and we'll ensure it doesn't happen again. Also, in April we will be installing a system to make Maqai Beach 100% solar powered- we will then be able to assess our sustainable hot water options!

Our simple small resort is specifically designed to create minimum impact on the surrounding culture, social structure and environment. Our Eco Bures/Safari Huts are all located on the beachfront and located specifically to catch natural airflow and light. They are designed to bring harmony to the relationship between our guests and our nature. We are sorry that they where below your expectations and we thoroughly agree that for travellers seeking a destination with full resort amenities, bring some more $$$ and chose a spot on Taveuni Island. For those seeking something castaway from the tourist trail, submerged in culture and surrounded by impossible beauty, chose Maqai Beach :)

Where do I start... The welcome onto the island was magic. The staff are just divine - helpful, friendly, warm, generous etc. We stayed 5 nights and could easily have stayed longer. Lots of activities organised everyday. Activities we did were snorkelling, jungle walks, picnics, visit to waterfall and rock slide, visit to local village, volleyball, table tennis, hanging out with the staff at night singing, playing guitar and drinking kava. On our last night the staff put on a fire dance - just brillant. The beach is beautiful and is only a 5 second stroll from the bure. You can sit on your deck or lie in a hammock and soak up the gorgeous view of the sea. The food was fantastic - plenty to be had by all.
We had the best holiday ever and have already started our Maqaii Fund for next Christmas holiday.

Maqai is an Eco lodge popular with surfers because of the fantastic surfing nearby however it offers something for everyone. As a two star Eco-lodge the accommodation is basic but fine. Everything else is five star. The location is incredible remote yet 20 minutes by boat from Taeveuni, stunning beach with pristine coral reef on your doorstep. The island itself is undeveloped with only a few villages and a couple of resorts. The highlight for me was the staff, they became your friends and were incredibly welcoming and warm, sharing their Kava freely of an evening. As a non-surfer there was lots to do. The resort organized picnics, snorkeling, a trip back to Taeveuni and the highlight for me a personal tour of the local village. Transfers are Arranged from Taveuni and the only hiccup is the occasionally erratic flights from Nadi. You don't have to be an intrepid venturer to visit, it offers something for every one. The best holiday I ever had and I would recommend it to every one

The place is awesome, you feel that you are isolated from the rest of the world! It's great for relaxing, painting, writing or doing activities.
The beach, just a few meters from the bures, is perfect for snorkelling, you can see turtles, sharks, a big varieties of corals... magnifique! after a swim of 50 meters there is a coral wall drop off, that is very rich. We went spearfishing with some people of the staff, it was very good.
The first day it feels weird, like entering a kind of community. But very quickly you understand that the clients here feel really at home thanks to the staff. The staff were very helpful, warm, welcoming. We went there for 6 days in the beginning of our round the world trip and the place worth the travel. The food is simple, healthy and nice.
The bures are face to the ocean and back to the jungle. the nature is cleeeeeeeeean.
Perfect for couples, family and single travellers because you can stay by yourself or mingle very easily with clients and staff.
Even when the place is full, you dont feel it crowded.
Visit this place.

Myself and 4 friends spent a week at maqai searching and finding some epic waves, from 2 to 5 foot, and more often than not, no more than 7 people surfing at a time. We had 2 beachfront safari huts which were clean, comfy, and more than adequate for our needs.what makes this place is the truly wonderful people who although paid local staff, make you feel like part of their extended family.I would (and have) fully recommend maqai to anyone who wants to see a slice of the 'real' Fiji. Vinaka again to Henry and his amazing staff up there. We will definitely be back..........
