“Relaxing hideaway”
Reviewed April 9, 2010

We took off to Treasure Island for a four day weekend over the Australia day (extra long for us) weekend. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and found the huts to be much more than adequate (I was a little worried by some of the other reviews), the amenities (such as hammocks outside the huts, scattered deck chairs on the beach) fantastic, and the staff the friendliest we've ever come across. We also dived every day we were there - the dive team are great, but the coral had been seriously damaged by the recent cyclones and what's left is being destroyed by plagues of crown of thorns. I nearly cried (with happiness!) when we arrived by boat on the island after our short but delayed flight which left at midnight (not sure about the Qantas schedules!) as we were serenaded with banjos and warm welcomes! The bathrooms are in dire need of a makeover, but we tried to stay out and about by the sea and the pool. The prepaid package meal deal is a cheap option, and includes all your food and drink (wine and tap beer included). I would definitely recommend Treasure Island as a great getaway without all of the normal hassle of getting somewhere remote!

We read many of the comments left here by previous guests, and some were very useful. But I have to say that after a week at Treasure Island with a wedding and 19 happy guests I have to say that this place is fantastic!

When we first arrived at Treasure Island they say 'Welcome Home', and they absolutely mean it! The people there are so friendly and honest, and genuinely nice. Not like the Carribean where they try to sell you a time share or some dodgy island souvenirs. And they went out of their way to make everything perfect for us for our holiday and wedding.

The food we had was really, really good. My wife is particularly fussy with cuisine and she loved it! In particular the lovely fresh fish, the cavery, the curries, all the chicken dishes were great, and lovely fresh fruit with every meal. There are some flies (it is an island near the equator at the end of the day) but the food is covered and was fine.

The accomodation is good and but mixed depending on what you pay for. As we were getting married we had one of the two best suites (5 & 6). Bure 5 is completely new, large comfortable bed, sofa, outdoor and indoor showers, fantastic bathroom, in short it was amazing. They also placed fresh flowers on our bed every morning and on the outdoor tables. Other rooms used by our group ranged from basic to recently refurbished but all were very clean and usable.

No one our group had a problem with them. Also all the rooms had outdoor tables and chairs with a lovely outdoor hamock not less than 2 meters away. Lying in the hammock at night in the gentle breeze watching the stars was lovely.

The pool was really good also. We were worried about the children at first ruining the pool. But they are kept busy with the island activities so much that we didn't see them much. The pool during the day was lovely for a cool dip, as a large tree shades some of the pool. But at night it was even better. Over looking the moon or watching the sunset from the pool are was idyllic.

We had a large group so when people felt social they would gather at the pool, or hang out near their bures if they wanted quiet time, so we didnt get sick of each other.

The evening entertainment was really good. Yes, honestly! They love to get the guests up for a dance. The firedancing display was the highlight - very dramatic!

Regarding water we chose to buy large bottles of water from the Marina before catching the boat over. It's expensive at the airport but quite reasonable at the shop at the marina or island shop. Apparently you can drink the tap water as it is piped from the mainland but we choose not to just to be safe.

Regarding the bar we drank alot of the Fijian Bitter. At first we noticed a small nasty after taste (if being picky) but by the end of the week it was fine. The cocktails are amazing in particular the pina coladas made with fresh coconut milk. Never tasted better anywhere else!

We had the romantic dinner for two one night and that was really nice. We had fillet steak which was a nice change from fish and they gave us a free bottle of bubbly. Our little table was in a private part of the pool area, and the service was great. Only issue was that three courses is a lot to eat in the heat - couldnt do the meal justice.

Weddings

The wedding was really good. We chose the glass wedding chapel with the amazing sea views. The voices from the choir were so good that my sister in law cried and my wife looked stunning as she was escorted by two fijian warriors to the chapel.

We had the wedding in the afternoon, followed by a reception buffet dinner on the beach watching the sun go down and our wedding dance was on the sand! In hindsight we would recommend having the wedding in the morning or late afternoon/evening as it gets very hot in the day. In saying that having the wedding at 3pm meant we could have a sunset reception which was unforgettable, so its give as it was very hot having photos in the sun in the afternoon. That said the great light meant even our own snaps came out looking professional.

We found Lavenia (Wedding Coordinator) very helpful, and a calming presence. More so once we got to the island as it is sometimes difficult to communicate electronically.

Because they're very relaxed in Fiji you need to have trust in the Wedding Coordinator that everything will run to plan. So if a 'bridezilla' is wanting everything to run with german efficiency you've defeated the point of going to Fiji in the first place! We would recommend doing your own bridal hairdressing just to be on the safe side though as that was the one spa service we werent happy with.

Our top tip - We bought a lot of dutyfree champagne for the reception. This was the cheaper option, as we just paid a small corkage and had our favourite bubbly.

We would recommend to anyone to get married on Treasure Island, or go for a group/family holiday. It was reasonably priced, and every person in our group had a fantastic time (although now they want us to organise another trip for our first anniversary!).

The negatives?

The seaweed on the beach that was mentioned in other reviews. To be fair it is only on one side of the island, everytime the staff clear it the tide brings in more so there isnt much they can do about it apart from apologise. We just used the other side of the island which had more beach area, better coral and nicer sand anyway.

We were on the side of the island which had the seaweed problem and we were okay
having drinks outside, laying in the hamock etc without noticing the smell apart from one stinky day.

Some parts of the resort look a little tired, but they are planning a lot of development to upgrade the whole resort so we figure that will get resolved. No major issues.

The only thing we really noticed was that some of the central path around the island is a bit broken in places and some of the lighting needed replacing so you could see where to step after dark (and a few cocktails).

Bring all paperwork which involves financial transactions to Treasure Island, especially where transactions have gone direct. We read this advice on another review and it was invaluable. Take copys of bank statements with transations to the island, copies of emails etc. The administration is on the main land and they might not have this information on the island. It really is very important.

Bring extra meds with you just incase. They do have a clinic on the island and we were fine but it pays to be safe. For example panadol, tummy meds such as immodium or peptobismol (as you will no doubt overdo it on the cocktails or the buffet!), drops for water ear, aftersun and good quality high spf waterproof sunscreen.

The positives?

Again everyone in our group had a fantastic time and would happily go back. Would happily recommend this island to anyone and hope to go again soon ourselves!

...sounds like it could be worse, and I'm sure it can be. We came out to Treasure Island intending to stay for a few days and ended up being "trapped" by the cyclone Tomas. However trapped we were the storm never really affected us and we had some windy but nice sunny days.

The place was nice, dated for sure, but the bure's and south side beaches left little more to ask for. With that said - when we left we all agreed that we felt like we finally got away. There was really no single reason behind this, rather a sensation that built up during the stay. Part of the reason was that there was a mismatch in preferences between us and the target group of the place. Treasure is teeming with families, and though I don’t mind kids our expectation was not consort with Aussie couples in their 40s getting hammered by the open bar (from 12 o’clock) whilst their kids were lugged around by the staff.

The staff were generally friendly, some were even great, but the general feeling you got was that this was not at all sincere. Ordering a drink, meal or asking for information you constantly felt as if you were intruding on their privacy – not exactly the kind of service you’d expect at a place that charges over 350 USD (700 FJD) per night. Food and bar were average at best, also a disappointment. There were things that were really nice, like having kava with the old boys and the music performances during dinner, but this was really not what we came for.

I would not recommend anyone to go to Treasure, most of my friends would probably hate it and even for someone who thinks it’s enough to go somewhere paradise-like and enjoy all-beer-you-can-drink by a pool there are better places around with more value for money. If you are part of the aforementioned and have toddlers, well, maybe…

Welcomed by friendly locals singing in beautiful harmony and playing guitar. Our bags were wisked away and taken to our room. We were then directed to the bar where we all received a mocktail and were given the general run down about what to expect, meal times etc.
The villas circle the island, giving every single person waterfront views.
I don't have children myself, but the staff were true magicians with the children at the resort. I didn't see a single whinging or crying child in the 6 nights I was there.
Some of the meals were average... but a range of tastes were certainly catered for. And when I'm not doing the cooking and washing up, who's complaining?!
The atmosphere is very relaxed and laid back. If you're an uptight person who needs everything on a strict timetable, don't go to Fiji!! You need to take off your watch, turn off your phone and just go with the flow.
There is a public phone and two computers with internet access.
Different activities everyday from Basket Weaving, Kava Ceremony, Cocktail making, para- sailing...
One couple I met decided to stay an extra night and when it was time for me to leave, I cried. It was the best holiday of my life!

We arrived by SeaFiji transfer, I rather expect as a surprise as when we arrived, we had to carry our own bags from the launch over the sand to reception (which we had to locate) as there was no-one to guide or to greet us. When we left by Helicopter the only person there to say farewell then was someone sweeping the ground. We found it to be unclean, eg: the restaurant was unswept from the night before in the morning food scraps, sand etc on floor, tables were dirty all day long and needed wiping, very long time to clear glasses, plates etc from outside tables - causing a problem with the flies. Lack of maintenence eg: main deck has broken and un-even boards, some quite large holes in the boards also - bordering on dangerous. Food - sorry but average. We were at Treasure 22 years ago, the 2010 brochure reads that there have been major renovations - the pool has certainly but sorry the rest of it seems as it was 22 years ago. The staff were ok, but certainly not as outgoingly warm and friendly as you would expect from such and island in such a majical location. One wonders where this comes filtering through from Senior Management - as it often does in business. Sorry Treasure but its a thumbs down from us on this occassion.

I would love to have recommended this place but I just can't quite do it - at least until I hear some money has been spent on upgrades.

I'll start with what was excellent. The location. Snorkelling here is fabulous. The beach is fine though had a little weed problem - no huge issue. Staff were always trying to remove it. The reef is literally just off the beach. Hand line fishing & kayaking were good, as were the people at the dive shop. The new pool is excellent.

The staff were also excellent - shout out to MJ. They clearly make an excellent kids club as well though we did not use this.

Food at the restaurant was generally overcooked. Nothing brilliant but you won't go hungry. We did have some good meals and some bad.

Planned activities sometimes went ahead and sometimes didn't. Not sure why? No worries there but a little dissapointing.

The bad - the Bure's are all in need of refurb. The door between adjoining guests rooms in our bure didn't even have a lock. Everything is old. The air conditioning barely keeps up. Linen in the rooms is old, as are supplied towels. Our bed squeaked badly even with a slight move. Louvers didn't work in the room either and wouldn't seal well.

There was a bit of a trash smell in the island, surely something can be done about this? Renovations being done at the spa made me not even think about using it (when power saws are being used nearby can you have a relaxing massage?)

In summary - if you don't plan on spending much time in the bure you'll have fun. Treat it as a two star room with five star location and some meals thrown in, you'll have fun.

This was our second visit, this time with our daughter how had turned 1 year old.

We were not expecting the rooms to be 5 stars, as we were here 5 years previously. However, the room was great, clean and serviced every day. We had no problems letting our daughter play on floor or around the bure. (My wife is a Doctor and very fussy!)

The staffs were just extraordinary. We found them friendly, happy and always wiling to assist. Of course they fell in love with our daughter, and many of the waitresses were away from their family and young children, so we possibly got extra attention. We were nearly always first up in the morning, so usually got them to ourselves.

The addition of the new pool was great with our young child. She loved the pool and we also went out to the ocean as well. It was cleaned daily and always was a welcome stop a few times a day.

We went to Treasure expecting some compromises. Sure the rooms were not luxury rooms, but we were not there for the rooms.

We just loved our stay, and we cannot wait to return. This goes especially for when our daughter can join in at the Kids Club. What fun the kids had there, and many families we talked to were back for 5 or more times because of the kids’ enjoyment of the club.

So don’t expect 5 star rooms, but go for the peace and relaxing lifestyle and enjoyment of your family.
