My family stayed at Castaway Island for 5 nights is December last year and had the best holiday we could have asked for. Mind you we got hit on day 3 by Cyclone Mick. The staff during the lead up to the cyclone were amazing. They were constantly giving everyone updates and on went around boarding up everyones windows and delivering food packages as we could not leave our rooms the day the cyclone hit. Unbelievably the staff were still coming around during the cyclone to see if we needed anything (crazy)... After the cyclone the weather was just beauitful. The staff got everything back to normal in no time at all (with help from the tourists too). The atmosphere at Castaway is very relaxed and carefree. It is known as the "barefoot island", so often we would go to breakfast or lunch just in our cossies... No pressure to dress up or be paranoid about what you look like. The staff are so sweet and caring and they just love children. My two 8 years olds were instantly won over by them. Kids Club is pretty good and lots of kids around to make the activities fun. The buffet has a good variety. Lots of BBQ meat, sausages, chicken and fish.. The kids loved making hamburgers each day at lunch time. Lots of healthy lite salads and yummy desserts. My husband also tried scuba diving for the first time and said it was one of the best experiences of his life.. Definately planning to go back.. This island really is for those that want a relaxed, laid back holiday.. If you want posh service or to be waited on hand and foot then try the Outrigger hotel.. we stayed there for 4 nights but missed the warmth and family feel of Castaway....

This is just a brief note from Auckland to let you know how much our entire family thoroughly enjoyed their time spent at Castaway!!
It was our 2nd visit, and much too long between trips, the 1st being in 2002!!
What is also unique is how well the island caters for all ages, from tiny tots, to youngsters, teenagers, and twenty somethings! Our kids are still enjoying it as much now, as when they 1st went to the islands some 14 years ago.
Despite Cyclone Mick having passed through the week before, we thought the staff had managed to look after Castaway amazingly well.
We spent 5 nights on the mainland at Denarau, after leaving on Dec 28th, and most of that time was spent feeling sad that we’d left!! It could never compare, even if it allowed our son to play some golf!
Our daughter (17) & son (19), along with my wife, all so enjoyed the 7 nights we had, that we are definitely planning on returning for +/-14 nights this next December 2010, as I have said to Laisa Ganilau, at the front desk, in an email!!
This was quite the best Christmas we have had for many many years, and we also intend to be with there for the famous "New Year’s Eve Party" as well next time!!
All the staff could not have been more helpful, happy, smiling and good natured as they were! They should all know that our family were extremely grateful for their care & help, all over the resort, from the restaurant to bar to dive club to water sports area!!
We wish the resort well in the New Year, and trust that all the greenery comes back soon to its usual lushness!
Bula!
Julian

Our family stayed at Castaways in late October. We have two children aged 7 & 10 with the 10 year old being disabled. Both are boys. We stayed there for 6 nights and it was the most relaxing time of our life.

While the kids were at first reluctant to attend the kids club; after the first night they loved it and wanted to go back every night. This surprised us as the 7 yo can be shy at times.

The staff at the resort totally embraced our 10 yo disabled son. He hugged staff constantly; joined in with their music and was made to feel welcome. The staff didn't mind at all. We thought he may of got in the way but instead they included him.

Tips would be going to the themed nights early to avoid the lines and before the foods disappears as sometimes it was not replaced; paddle around the island (we did it with an adult and child in a different ski); try and stay as close to the beach if possible; definately try the Pizza. If your kids are fussy eaters and dont like the kids buffet then order a Pizza for them. If in season go the meal package and you can save heaps.

Food is okay; breakfast seems to be same at every buffet; try the menu for lunch and check out dinner and the menu before deciding. Both were good.

Our family would definately go back again. I can still see the staff singing as the boats come in with new arrivals.

We spent 4 nights at Castaway in October. I think if this was your first visit to a fiji island you would think its great, but having stayed at Matamanoa (the best!) and Tokoriki I was a little disappointed. Firstly its only a small island in land area, but there are alot of bures, I think over 66. There is only one main swimming beach that is out of the wind, and it seemed to be cram packed full of all the resort guests every day, so trying to get a sun lounger was out of the question. Our bure was lovely, clean, tropical feel and spacious so no complaints there. Not overly impressed with being woken up early every morning with workmen building something directly behind the bure, their loud chatter stopped any sleep ins. Very disappointed with the food, it was very mass produced and basic. The staff are half friendly but dont go out of their way for you, this resort doesnt have the same intimate feel of Matamanoa. There the staff all knew your name, and every night at dinner they personally welcomed and said goodbye to guests coming and going every day, they made you feel special. Maybe the difference is that Matamanoa has only 33 rooms as opposed to Castaways 66. Also the food and snorkelling at Matamanoa are spectacular where as I was hard pressed to see many fish around the reef off Castaway, the big South Sees catamaran cruises by closely a few times a day so I think this scared them all off.
I think its an ok resort, its very pricey for what you are getting. Great for a family with kids, if you are a couple head over to Matamanoa, better food, better service and better value for money.

we stayed at castaway island in 2007, and were married on the island, it was a beautiful ceramony even know it poored rain on our big day. one hick up I organised to have my make up done by a professional from soffitel motel but they never turned up so I wouldn't recommend you get them. We stayed in one of the bungalows right on the beach with our two little ones, which were 2 and 7 at the time. They were really lovely. we could hear the waves at night.
The kids had an absolute ball, and loved the kids club.
The food was lovely although my mum and hubby got sick from the buffet, which kind of ruined the trip a little as they were laid up for a couple of days, but I must say the staff looked after them very well.
The staff were beautiful people, they all new our names right from the start.
Don.t forget to try one of their famous cocktails by the pool, think it was called love on the beach.

Over all had a lovely time, the island looks just like it does in the brochure, we took a sea plane to the island which was a great experience also.
