Castaway Island Fiji
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 8, 2009

Castaway is the most wonderful resort I have ever visited. The staff provides impeccable personal service. The food is top of the line with beautiful presentation. The island location is very private with a plethora of viewable sea life. The resort provides a perfect balance between traditional island culture and necessary modern amenities. I could not have asked for anything more. If I did, I'm sure the staff would have answered it, lol.

Stayed in a Garden Bure however friends had a Beachfront Bure - Regardless of what Bure you choose - They are great! I was there when they had just finished the renovations. The staff and pizza are the best things about Castaway. As you will notice during your trip - the destination is in my opinion - better than Tahiti. The people, price, scenery - everything Tahiti has - you can get in Fiji - now I believe there are a few properties starting to have Overwater Bungalows. At Castaway you dont need to have that - the snorkeling was great too. Enjoy your stay - if at all possible I would recommend more than one island stay during your trip. Experience a few islands.

We had to go back to Castaway Island. The kids demanded we go nowhere else! We've been to many of the Fiji islands before and tried lots of hotels on the mainland too, but Castaway Island is the real deal! This is absolutely what you come to Fiji for. Extremely friendly staff who are so welcoming from the second you step ashore onto the white powdery sand and right throughout your stay.

The accommodation is in traditional style thatched bures. They are individual bungalows where as a lot of the other islands are duplexes. Definitely the 4 stars they say they are. Inside they are really beautifully appointed and really spacious. They have air-conditioning as well as ceiling fans. Decor is elegant island style with rich fabrics, comfy beds, lovely artworks, a great bathroom with separate shower and toilet and gorgeous timber furnishings. A lovely verandah out the front of each bure is yours to relax and enjoy the views. Doesn't really matter if you take an island, ocean or beach front as they are scattered around the resort and you are never far from the two lovely beaches or pool. The Beach front ones are the most popular because the views from these are sensational and can step onto the sand and into a hammock near your bure. Bliss on holidays and a great place to start reading before you nod off for a luxurious afternoon sleep!

I'd recommend taking the meal plan as it is such good value.
Breakfast is extensive and they bake all their own pastries. There was a good choice of fruits, cereals, yoghurts and juices and they have a chef cooking eggs any way you like them to add to the other hot choices like bacon, sausages, hash browns, mushrooms etc. Lunch is light as you like or the big burgers are amazing and they often have a buffet too but you still have the choice of this or a la carte. The dinner menu was good and we ordered off the menu several times but they also do an amazing curry night one night and the traditional Fijian feast another night.
The kids adored the gourmet wood fired pizzas at the Sundowner bar and you can even get your pizza in a take away box and eat it on the beach under the stars. A true holiday experience.

I'd really recommend the outer reef snorkelling tour where you go out on a very well equipped dive boat to the outstanding reefs around the island. That said, there was excellent snorkelling right off the beach and I thought the equipment and safety standards were excellent. My sons loved the late afternoon fishing trips and the Fijian boat driver knew exactly where to go to get the best out of the hand line fishing. We caught large coral trout, a barracuda and some bream. This was enjoyed by several of us plus some other guests we became friendly with and the chef cooked it all up in an amazing tempura batter with fresh salads and yummy chips.

You simply must take advantage of the island massage. Much cheaper than the mainland hotel spas and it was really very good.

This was our fourth time at Castaway and honestly I wouldn't bother going anywhere else. Castaway is peaceful, relaxing, friendly and the beach, bures and food are all good. Couldn't really ask for more and you really feel like you've had a great holiday. We'll be back again next year!

We have just returned from six nights at Castaway Island. Two adults and two teenagers. It was our first time in Fiji and I think we picked the perfect holiday for a family vacation. This was the last week before Australian School Holidays and was only about 70% full most of the week.

If you intend going before end of March (except Xmas / New Year), check with your travel agent about the “Meal Bonus” option. For four people for six nights, for all meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner, pizzas) it cost us $400. If you chose the meal plan available on the island, you would have been charged $2520 for four people. If you don’t intend going on the meal plan, the main courses are around $40 each.

We stayed in an Island Bure which was located next to the North Beach and close to the pool but we could not hear any noise. We could not complain about anything on the island. The staff were always warm and friendly. We hardly experienced any “Fiji Time” with service either.

After reading every previous review, we bought some Jacobs Creek wine from Nadi Airport for $13FJ and were charged $10 corkage on 2 out of the 3 nights we had wine. We also purchased some snacks from Yees Supermarket at the Marina which kept costs down. Weather was great for the first few days before we experienced some cloudy days but only really rained on the last day. We are from Brisbane so the weather was very similar this time of year.

The cost of the 3 Island Hop has recently increased to $119FJ. We did the Shell Village Tour which was $30FJ. You need cash to pay for this tour too but you can convert cash at Reception if required.

About the only thing I would change is to have some better options for night-time entertainment. After the standard frog and crab races, the main area basically deserted but after a hard day in the sun, most people are exhausted anyway.

The best way to describe the island is all the “No’s” – No roads, no television, no internet, no mobile phone, no working, no housework, no pollution, no worries.

If you require any updated menus send me a personal message and I can send photos.

Hey everyone. I have just come back from Castaway Island with my girlfriend, (we're both about 30 from Adelaide Australia).... and its just such an amazing place. Originally i wasnt going to bother writing a review becasue there are so many good ones about Castaway Island already, but its quite an amazing place.

If you arrive by ferry, your greeted at the beach by a group of fijians playing the guitar welcoming you to castaway island. We arrived by helicopter though and had a nice fijian man carry our bags for us to the hotel, whilst we were taken to the bar for a free fruit cocktail.

As far as activities, many are free for things like windsurfing, catamaraning, snorkelling, tennis, kayaking etc. Things you would have to pay for are activities such as jetskiing (expensive at $140 for 30 mins, parasailing ($80) (but really cool and a great experience ) outer reef snorkelling $50pp and inner reef snorkelling ($30pp i think?) .. where they drive you out into the ocean to a set of fantastic reefs that you can snorkel .... They also have scuba diving where you have a lesson in the pool and you are trained to scuba, then they take you out for a dive in the ocean.. i dont know the cost of that though... You can get a massage for 30 minutes to an hour (definitely recommend the hour). Sooo relaxing!

You can also walk around the island if you wish. However, this is not a fun relaxing walk along the beachside if thats what you were thinking, because we were! .Firstly you can only do it at low tide, but secondly.. its not a stroll along the beach. 2/3 of the islands coast line is rocks. So if your adventurous and you have sneakers then its great fun climbing rocks and chasing or avoiding all the rock crabs... Myself and my girlfriend are only 30 and are fit and adventurous... but it was 30 degrees and we werent wearing sneakers only thongs (flip flops for non aussies) and it was hard work. But at least we did it.

As far as snorkelling goesy, theres plenty of coral and fish to see right on the shoreline of catsaway isalnd. so you dont need to go outer reef or inner reef snorkelling... . you can just walk in off the beach of the resort and theres fish and coral everywhere. its great. You will be amazed how many huge colourful tropical fish are right there where you would swim in the water.

The cocktails are great... about $13 during the happy hour and they are reallly really good cocktails... they have about 20 to choose from. Things like beer and wine were pretty expensive i thought though. At dinner they charge like $12 per glass.. Its good wine, but surely $7 or $8 is more reasonable per glass.

As far as food... the have the option of the food plan that most poeple take. Its $105 pp per day... and expensive... but when you go to dinner and see the prices for all the meals, the food plan works out well ... The only way you would be able to do it cheaper is if you were skiping meals... But why would you..? The food is amazing.. Its 5star restaurant food every meal. The breakfast has everyhign.... continental and hot breakfast buffet... fruits, juices, croissonts... everything! My favourite time was dinner time though. The meals were just so good and the chefs come out and ask you what you thought of the meal. Great stuff.

At night time it wasnt exactly party central there... after dinner people just hang around the outdoor eating area listneing to the fijian band "the bad boys" play their guitars and other instruments. They are really really good ... singing acoustic fijian songs and also well known songs . The funniest for me was the 4 old fijians playing Guns N Roses, knocking on heavens door...Gold!

The out door eating is really really nice and then after they sometimes have some activities. They had a small quiz night thing, but its only about 20 questions, but the highlight for me was the frog race. They had an auction to buy your frog... We ended up with a frog representing New Zealand... called Carter. He was rubbish. I paid $40 for him. From memory it was the Italian frog that dominated the night. hehe.

If your there on a Wed night they do a traditional meke dance presentation thing. Really cool.... they also have free cocktails that night and free wine by the poolside where they invite all guests to mingle with the management.

Also if you have kids, theyre very well looked after. The fijians luv kids and they have a kids club that you can leave them at whilst the parents have relaxing times alone... As for those without kids, such as us, they seem to segretage the families to one side of the resort and others on the other. its great, becuase when you dont have kids, other poeples can be annoying. So you only see them here and there by the pool.

The accomodation bures are great. Theyre fully air conditioned. very clean. Each day they are looked after, to the point where the foot bath out the front is refreshed with clean water and a traditional fijian flower...

The poeple are very friendly. Every single staff memeber on the island will say Bula to you every time you walk past them. Very very friendly...

The only negative is first of all... it is expensive... but you get what you pay for I say... We saw a couple other islands on our way back home that were nothing comapred to Castaway... The only other thing is they do operate on Fijian time. So every now and then youll expereince slow service, but we serioulsy had no complaints... it was fantastic.

If you have any questions let me know. Im happy to answer them.

Cheers!
Paul

Isa Isa you are my only treasure....

It has been almost a week back at home. The Gold Coast that is. We spend 10 glorious days on Castaway Island. Our last experience was 10 years ago when we got engaged on the night of the Managers Coctail party.

Returning to Castaway was so fantastic and seeing familiar faces was a treat. The staff really know how to leave a lasting impression. This visit with two children in tow was an absolute pleasure. The girls are aged 4 and 6 and loved Kids club and the Pool. The children eat at 5. 30 from a buffet and gives the parents time to have a drink and watch the sunset. At 6.30 they would go to Kids club and my youngest even fell asleep there a few times, but they loved meeting other children and staying up later than usual. The program was fantastic and it gave us a lot of time together. We had dinner by candlelight every night under the stars. We celebrated our 9th wedding anniversary and my 40th Birthday and were treated to a special table and a cake and special serenade by the band.

The Bures are cosy and airconditioned. The beds are comfortable and the rooms are maintained well and clean.

The food is tasty and lots of variety. I do recommend the bonus meal plan if it is available. Check with your travelagent BEFORE you go. We paid $267 for all four of us for the entire stay, all meals included. This was fantastic value and is only available at certain times of the year.

Do not run out of sunscreen and make sure you pack all your necessities, as these can be quite pricy from the well stocked boutique. We paid $24 for a small tube of Banana Boat.

This will be our holiday destination in future. I miss you Castaway and cant wait to see you again.

"As the roses will miss the sun at dawning, Every moment my heart for you is yearning." (isa Lei)

My family & I just had 7 magical nights on Castaway Island. I am a very discerning traveller & can be very 'picky' but there just isn't anything to fault about this place. If you have a young family then you will not be dissapointed with Castaway, the level of care is outstanding and there is a lot for them to do. The kids club is well staffed & you know its good when your kids actually want to go there!! There are lots of kids on Castaway so your kids will enjoy the social aspects of their stay also, our kids met other kids from Sth Africa, USA, NZ and ofcourse Australia. The standard of accomodation is top class and the rooms are highly maintained & serviced with all the little details addressed every time. Even the hand carved bowls of water at your Bure front door used to wash the sand from your feet are renewed every day with fresh flowers floating it!! The diving set-up is world class, gear is almost new & the staff are well drilled. The water activities equipment is all in top order and very well maintained. The food in Fiji is always a bit average but the food at Castaway was well done, if your a gourmet foodie then you'll be dissapointed but if you want good quality this is varied and tasty then you'll be happy. But probobly the biggest asset Castaway has is its staff, they really do look after you well and they know how to do it. The term your Castaway family is not BS!! You genuinly feel like your leaving your 2nd home. I left feeling relaxed, invigorated, happy and wishing I could stay!! Needless to say we have already booked next year!!
