Been to this resort on two occasions. First time was around 5 years ago and it was magical. We had an Oceanfront Bure and the tide would come right to our doorstep. We went again last year and found that a seawall was installed making the beachfront less accessible and prone to "potholing" after high tide. This is understandable but did detract from the experience we were accustomed to. While the resort is still nice, we felt it had lost some of its charm. The weekly supply barge was also smelly in the evening on the west side of the island. The food is good. We had the unfortunate experience of having some of our cash stolen from our locked bure (presumably by the cleaning staff). It wasn't that much and in hindsight, we should have put it in the room safe but we felt comforable with the friendly Fijian staff. Although resort security investigated our claim and wrote a report, we felt that some staff didn't really care much. To their credit, we believe we got an extended banana boat ride because of the incident and for that, we felt that they do care about their guests. I think in high season, the property is still pricey (~$1000/night).

Room Tip: Oceanfront Bure is best. West side more private than East side of island but can be windy in Spring.

Dear JoeB

Many thanks for taking the time to review your stay last year in September. The installation of a sea wall on one of our beaches has been a necessary step to ensure the beach front bures could be maintained in their position as the beach has eroded over time, putting some bures at risk of having to be removed. We've added nice stairs, lounge chairs and thatched umbrellas and at low tide this beach still has a wide area of sand at the shore. At high tide, the water is lapping happily up to the wall and many guests love this as its like swimming in a giant Pacific Ocean pool.

We are sorry that the barge created an unpleasant odour. It usually only comes in once a week to collect the skip bins and perhaps the wind wasn't in your favour on this occasion, however we do try to have it there for the absolute minimum time necessary to complete the collection. Unfortunately, on an island this is a necessary part of the resort operation, to ensure we minimise our human footprint on our pristine island.

Please be assured that we take any guest issues, such as the reported loss of cash, very seriously and if that was not communicated to you at the time, we are sorry. This was a very isolated incident and the matter was handled internally with our Management and Department Heads with the utmost of serious attention, we can assure you. When I brought the issue up with the Resort Manager in order to respond to your posting, he instantly recalled the situation as it is not something that happens often if at all.

The Castaway experience remains a unique one and we hope we can welcome you and your family back again soon to enjoy an enhanced experience.

Stayed here a couple of years ago and forgot to write a review but have always remembered how lovely it was. On arrival so special to be greated in the castaway tradition and can bring tears to the eyes watching how happy kids are playing with everyone. Love the setting of the restaurants and being able to watch over the shore while eating and drinking. Something very special and unique about castaway in that they seem to have held onto that feeling of a 'boutique-family-orientated' resort with personal touches to everything.

The Castaway Island resort is a short hop, skip and a jump from the airport where everyone arrives in Fiji. The beach front bure, otherwise known as a hut or room, had comfortable beds, good air conditioning and close to everything.

Although we normally don't care for food plans at the various resorts we visit, we must admit The Castaway Island was much better than most others.

Cost for everything was reasonable and one receives value for their money at the Castaway Island Resort.

Room Tip: A beach front bure is worth the small extra cost.

Bula M O!
We are delighted to read that you enjoyed your stay at Castaway Island, Fiji and sincerely appreciate you taking the time to provide a review. Just to ensure we do not mislead other readers, I must clarify that Castaway Island is a private island resort located in the Mamanuca Island group and accessible by 1.5hour ferry transfer from Port Denarau Marina or 10 minute seaplane or helicopter ride from Nadi Airport, Fiji's international gateway.

The high standard of dining options and creative award winning cuisine from our team of Castaway Chefs is certainly something we are very proud of and we are glad you enjoyed the food and overall Castaway experience.
Vinaka (thank you)

They have everything from scuba diving to hobie cats and tennis court, also a volleyball field, great kids club, 2 swimming pools - one for families with kids, one for couples. They are very well separated so people don't hear each other. There is everything if you want to have an active holiday and not just lie by the beach. They live stream their volleyball beach side so you can have a sneak into what are they doing and how does it look like. White sand is everywhere. A great escape from a usual Denarau stay. It only takes 30-40min to get there by a boat transfer.

They have 3 restaurants - one for stone oven pizzas and other lunch time snacks, the main restaurant and an awesome stir fry grill.

Room Tip: Rooms are very similar so it depends on how much you want to spend on a room and if a room by the beach is very important to you or not.

We came back to Castaway for 6 days 2.5 years after our first visit and enjoyed it even more the second time. Everyone was so friendly and it felt like catching up with a huge extended family. Even the wild and woolly weather from an almost-cyclone for two days was fun! Our 10 year old discovered body surfing in the king tides and our 16 year old probably made Castaway history by being the first person to never swim in either the pool or the sea but we were all happy doing our own thing. Lovely food, so fresh and healthy, super cocktails (I particularly recommend Emily W's margaritas) and magical sunsets. I can't think how Fiji could be any better or nicer. Thank you/Vinaka Castaway.

Room Tip: Pay the extra and go beachfront. We stayed on the north east beach and it was brilliant.
