“Over-run with day trippers!”
Reviewed September 15, 2013

We stayed at Castaway as a family of four. While it is a beautiful island, we were very disappointed to be paying A$800 per night for a beach front bure and finding that every morning, a boat load of day trippers would arrive from the mainland and set themselves up on the deck chairs in front of our bure for the day from about 10am till 5pm. Castaway is not a big island, and with over 60 bures for regular guests (mostly families of 4-5) the beach is already busy enough and for the price you're paying, I don't think you should have to share it with day-trippers, some of whom were drinking, smoking and swearing. We've stayed at several other islands including Malolo and Vomo neither of which had day trippers, and Mana, which does have day trippers but as the island is much larger I think it was less noticeable. If Castaway is going to charge 5 star prices (for a very 4 star resort), it should respect its guests, not try to make a few extra dollars!

This was our first trip to Castaway (but not to Fiji) and I can see why people keep coming back many times to this special place. By the time we alighted on the island and were given the run down on everything and shown to our bure, I was in love. Besides the stunning natural beauty of the island, the bures felt secluded amongst the tropical vegetation and meandering paths. Although quaint and almost hobbit-like from the outside, the bures were surprisingly well-appointed and spacious inside, and none were more than a few steps from either of the beaches. The resort was meticulously maintained and the service was better than I have experienced at other Fijian destinations. Most of the staff seemed to really enjoy their jobs although some were friendlier than others. The gardeners in particular gave me a chuckle most days with their laughter and banter as they moved plants around in the gardens. The food was good to very good (especially the pizzas and omelettes) although I was a bit disappointed that the lunchtime noodle bar did not happen as advertised. The setting of the tables at the Waters Edge restaurant seemed a bit overly complicated as they were re-dressed multiple times per day and staff may have better used their time attending to cleaning the chairs after messy children. What a spectacular location to eat overlooking the beach though - never too many people, stunning sunsets, most enjoyable. The swimming pools were lovely although the childrens' pool area got a little crowded at times and the adult pool seemed to be mostly under-utilised. The north beach is where all the action happens (and there is plenty to do) but there is also the south beach if people would like some peace and quiet and time to themselves. The bushwalk to the top of the hill was rated as medium difficulty - don't be fooled, it was more like 'OMG am I going to make it?', but worth the effort. Of course there are little things that could be improved as in any hotel/resort, but the overall feeling this place gave me caused a little tear to be shed upon leaving. I could have stayed for much longer than 5 days, a lifetime in fact..

Castaway caters well for families with young children as this appears to be the demographic. Customer service is inconsistent when compared to the outrigger where we also stayed during this trip. The island is pristine however gets congested with daytrippers. The cost is high which opens up many options for the island resort holiday maker. Many posters go back year after year, if you like the idea of basic customer service / meals and a kids club to free up your day then I can see the attraction for parents.

Whilst ill try and not make this an overly negative review / it's more of a warning-
1)- great place for kids and there are lots of them. So don't come here if you don't have kids with you or like kids. Our 3 had a ball but clearly some honeymooners didn't.
2) lots of choices to eat - pizza restaurant, Asian fusion, casual cafe, buffet and a la carte. Food is inconsistent. 1st week it was terrific, the 2nd it was poor.
Also - food poisoning and norovirus is a major issue - expect to get sick. We all did more than once and so did many others. However, this is 1st and only time I have been sick in Fiji so not sure if its bad hygiene or what. Soon as you get there start having the ginger chicken soup - it's brilliant and boosts your immune system.
3) service is terrible - I now about Fiji time (been to Fiji 8 times), but this was a little more than that - so dont get frustrated.
4) there is wifi in all bar and restaurant areas, but it's slow and weak
5) suba diving is brilliant and Jerry the instructor is very experienced and a great guy
6) minimal motorized water sports
7) the best this about this place is the nurse - full time and on call - she is lovely and you'll probably need her for stomach bugs.

Overall it's was ok, we had a great time despite being ill for 2 days each - but it's expensive. I preferred vomo

We went to Castaway as part of our first ever trip to Fiji . We were recommended this resort from a friend who's daughter has allergies and its catering for GF/coeliac and its high attention to food quality.

Our first impressions were "wow", having got off the big ferry and getting the connecting boat a few hundred metres from the shore. I was speechless, seeing the island from a distance, a mirage of sand and water, picture perfect. Aside from an American couple, all other passengers on the boat were staff members, so it felt almost like "family coming home". We were greeted by the welcoming song and the staff who carried my kids onshore which brought tears to my eyes. the check in process was very organised where we were taken to the main restaurant where we were given a welcome drink, and filled out the paperwork, then led to our bure, with a run down how everything works.

We spent 5 nights here overall, and immediately I felt my stress levels subside. There is little or as much to do here, depending on your preferences and that is the beauty of being on a private island. Even for a stress head like me, I slept really well and had many "a ha" moments that I will never forget. Watching the sun set, snorkelling off the reef, dinner under the stars, to name a few.

Truly, you cannot put a price on quality. From the delicious meals, the tastefully decorated bures, the wonderful nannies and the pristine beaches.

My only gripe is castaway is becoming out of price range for a number of people now with price increases each year for AUD$600 night min just for accommodation? But considering the resort gets booked up each year I guess management needs to reflect supply and demand? Just a thought.

Pluses:
Food
Beach
Private island
Easy to get to
Kids club
Nannies

Minuses (and I'm splitting hairs here)
Some kids getting ear infections etc probably from the pool - needs to be cleaned more?
Kids buffet dinner restricted to 530-630 so families can't eat together
The dive shop staff not as friendly and a bit intimidating
Lack of communication - most of the ins and outs were answered by other guests I met at the resort

As I mentioned, not all of the staff were friendly however some did stand out and if the General Manager is reading this I would like to mention:

-Joe (activities man) -a tireless worker
-Paulini (reception) - instrumental in organising / confirming my booking
-Lucy (restaurant) - organised and reliable babysitter, better than any child worker in Oz
- Poni - service with a smile and thank you for the cookies
-Eva, Mary & Knox etc - awesome kids club,
- Derwendra / egg man - eggs cooked to perfection, great stir fries
- Chef Lance Seeto - Lance, you make this resort.

Budget depending, I would love to come back to this resort, sooner than later.

Here's hoping! vinaka

Room Tip: Any bures are great. We chose the cheapest option and were still only metres from the beach.

We have just returned from Castaway Island where we spent 2 incredible weeks relaxing in heaven.
The Island is truly the best place to holiday with small children.Everything is so well thought out.
You have the kids club for the 3 year olds upwards and the most warm and loving Fijian women to care for the babies so mum and dad can enjoy some adult time having dinner, sunset cocktails, relaxing by the adult pool.
The resort it self is very charming the bures are spacious and clean. The restaurants are also wonderful especially 1808 .Thankyou Lance Seeto for the best Chinese food in Fiji.
Breakfast is wonderful and egg man makes its so much fun for the kids.
Lingo the duty manager was so helpful in making sure we could get what we needed.
As for the beach it is beautiful. The water is so clean ,blue and warm. The weather was sensational this time of year clear blue skies virtually every day.
This really is paradise and we can't thank all the staff enough for being so genuinely loving and warm to our children.A special thanks to Joe and Maralyn at reception Tuewei in the restaurant the fantastic nurse who is available 24hrs a day..Its not just the beautiful Island but also the staff who make this a magnificent place to travel to with young children.

We were unusual travelling from the UK, as mostly Aussies on Castaway. We had been 11 years earlier and not much had changed, just more Bures and a larger dining room.
We chose the meal plan full board, which I could not fault. A large variety and 3 different restaurants to choose from. Book the 1808 restaurant as soon as you arrive as it only operates certain nights. It is a quality restaurant on the sand overlooking the sea and NO kids!
I loved the fact that children were actively encouraged to have kids tea 5.30 to 6.30 and then go to kids club for the evening, leaving adults to have supper to themselves. The kids club activities were really good, caring staff and great variety. They even took them all on a dolphin safari!
We did the guided reef snorkelling with Joe, and it is amazing how many fish were so close to the shore and the water is so warm and clear too!
We had a helicopter transfer to the island and a seaplane to the airport, both of which were fantastic. There is also a water taxi to the airport.
Carefully consider the location of you bure, as there are two locations (beaches) to consider. We picked the north beach, as it is larger and less busy.
