“A perfect place to relax”
Reviewed November 7, 2012

After biking in New Zealand we made a stopover in Castaway for relaxation and that was a perfect choise. A very charming place with the most pleasant and service minded staff you can imagine. Good value for our money too. A possible tsunami treat was handled very professionally.

we stayed here early late january 2012 to celebrate my daughter's first birthday and my husband's birthday as well. we had high expectations based on what we read here and with the top dollar we paid, we expected it to be the best of our vacations. the stand out bad experience we had was the food (which you think will be the best that you're going to get). My husband ordered sushi and half way thru the food, he bit into something hard. When he spit it out, it was a TOE NAIL! When we told it to the guy manning the resto, he said we're sorry. That's it! No words from the good chef and no apologies from management. No nothing! It was disgusting. If you want, i can send picture of the toe nail. Not going here ever.

We stayed on Castaway for 6 days in early October, our first experience of a real tropical holiday away from Australia. While i don't completely understand why people would come back to this particular resort for several years in a row (no shortage of reviews to that effect on tripadvisor ) it is certainly a lovely environment to laze about in for a while, new pool area, lovely grounds, beautiful clear water and unspoilt coral reefs, smiling staff and a minimum of unsupervised noisy kids. Non stop food all day and the quality is very high. T he accommodation was a little disappointing, smelt musty and old but the bed was great and the shower area was refurbished. We completely underestimated how hot it would be and quickly ran out of spf30, having to apply it many times each day. One of the main reasons we went to this resort is their reputation for catering for food allergies, youngest son has coeliac disease and requires gluten free food. This is normally an issue on every family holiday, having to explain to waiters and chefs all the time but was no problem on Castaway. We were introduced to Lance the head chef on our first night and he reassured us that all meals had several GF options and we were even able to get freshly made GF pancakes and bacon each morning. I would go back, but not before trying other resorts, just for variety.

Room Tip: Maybe try to select a bure away from the pools, we heard some late night revellers a couple of nigh...

After a stressful 2012 we needed a place to unwind and chill that was not too far from home but somewhere we have never been before, Castaway Island resort fit the bill perfectly.
Just like most of the other reviewers we found the Fijian people the highlight of our trip, they are just so warm and friendly and seeing their smiling faces made us relax even more.
We had an Oceanview Bure which was perfect for us, it was vey clean and cool even with the air-con off in the middle of the day. We were about 20 steps from the north beach which seemed to be the calmer of the the two beaches during our stay.
We loved the crystal clear water and snorkeling was good, we found the best spot was right out in front of the restaurant. The pools were also very good although the adult pool seemed warm all the time, strange when the temperature was about 30 degrees everyday. The kids pool was also well used by my family, my 3 yr old loved this pool as it was just the right depth for her, she also loved the ice cream at the kids pool snack bar run by the very nice Kristina.
The kids club was great and my daughter loved Maryanne and Mary who took care of her and taught her about fijian culture. The kids club put on a weekly show of fijian dance on Wednesday nights and I was really proud of my daughter for performing in this.
We bought the food package which was good value, the food was great with the choice of a buffet or ala carte most days. Misi in the restaurant was very nice to us and always had a great big smile on his face.
Overall we loved Castaway Island resort and plan to return again soon, the staff make this place and if you can't relax here give up.

How can I be homesick for a place I only spent 4 days in? I can't think of a more beautiful and friendly place. All the other reviews are spot on and I wish we had spent the entire holiday here. I wanna go back to the island!!

Room Tip: Our garden bure was perfect. Look for ones fairly near the pools etc as the ones far down the south...

Well, from the moment we viewed the Island from our Helicopter we were captivated! We were greeted by friendly staff and taken straight to breakfast by the waters edge while we checked in.
When we were taken to our Bure they announced "Welcome Home" which we thought was really nice.

The food is amazing here, would highly reccommend getting the meal package, the banquet is good for families but the menue is AMAZING, not to mention the all day desert menu which was epic. The all day pizza bar was great for a mid-day snack to ensure the cocktails didnt do too much damage!

We didnt have our kids with us so were a bit worried about the island being so kid friendly but the only time we really saw the kids were at breakfast, they are kept really well entertained with the kids club. With all the islands privacy it was easy to find a spot with no-one else around too. There is an adults only pool, most parents do the right thing and keep their kids out, but there were the occassional parent who felt their kids was above the rules!

Difinately spend happy hour at the swim up bar in the adults pool, Emily is so nice and friendly and makes the most awesome cocktails. We absolutely loved Vonu Lagar too.

The walk up the mountain is well worth the effort, but do it early before it gets too hot, also take the time to kayak around the island, its so beautiful. The snorkeling was great, right off the shore.

We didnt do any of the activities, did speak with people who had done the fishing charter and were really dissapointed. We were going to do the Monuriki tour but it was a bit expensive for 5 hours when the island wasn't that far away.

Seriously, im not the lazy type but thougherly enjoyed the 5 days on Castaway, there was always somewhere new to sit and relax, at times it felt like we were the only ones on the island. The lovely Bure's are private and all have their own little "space", we were in number 65 which was tucked nicely into the trees for maximum privacy.

We met a few couples who are regulars to the island, I can see the attraction of visiting time and time again.

WARNING: Castaway makes every-where else look drab and overly commercial. We stayed in Denaru after Castaway and it was a real let-down in comparison, so my advise would be to make Castaway your last stop.

If you can take the helicopter ride in, it was so quick (it beat waiting around for 4 hours for the boat) and the views are amazing. We took the boat back which takes about an hour and is as boring as hell as Castaway is the last stop.

Our experience at Castaway Island truely exceeded expectations & we can't wait to visit again :-)

Had a great relaxing holiday on castaway, great for families (we had our 10 and 14 yr old daughters with us) but quiet enough for couples too considering the island was full but each day you wondered where everybody was! Our only concern was that our ocean view bure was not ready so they upgraded us to a Beach Bure. Even though this was lovely and situated on the quiet side of the island right on the beach the last thing you want to do is settle into a Bure just to move 2 days later into your ocean view ( which was just the same bure wise just sat back a little further from the beach), it was a very disruptive day although we requested a late check out upon departure from the island due to the incovenience and it was granted so we had full use of our room and the resort before departing on the 4.30 sth sea cruise transfer back to denaru. PS the captains lounge is a nice way to travel if you dont like crowds and want a bit more comfort and airconditiong. Although on the way we sat outside the south sea cruise boat in the sun and it was gorgeous too. The island massages are well worth it with lovely settings. We had the meal plan well worth it, you can eat anywhere anytime and as we had a teenager who liked to sleep late and make her way out of the bure just before midday she would head straight to one of the eateries before joinng the rest of the family for our day of relaxation. There is a tennis court and ping pong table. Both pools are great the swim up pool bar is a bit of fun. Most parents keep this area child free or child quiet if their kids are swimming with them. The walk over the island is well worth it, the views are wonderful. Also if you like canoeing you can do this around the whole island and the views of the coral from your canoe is gorgeous and very clear. A bit of kava is well worth it too and even more special was the chance to head to the staff quarters (by invitation) and sit with the locals immersing yourself in their Kava ceremonies....a great opportunity. Banana boat ride and trip to shell village were great extras too and enjoyed by all. Make sure you snorkell right out front of the resort opposite the boatbure,,,, we found nemos, giant clams, reef sharks and many tropical coral and fish. The cocktail party on a wednesday night and fijian show are heaps of fun and nightly entertainment available each nicht (crab race, quiz nights, silly games etc) all fun too if you choose to be apart of it or not. The most enjoyable part of the holiday is the friendly fijian people, most are so so happy and friendly and interacting with them and their traditions are great. My daughter had her hair bradied at $1FJ per braid plus $3FJ per packet of beads and the ladies come to your bure to do the braiding. We didnt have much to do with the kids club as our kids are past that now but the word around the island and the look on the kids faces and the parents faces relaxing together without their kids said it all! The all day deserts are yummy and the lattes delicious!
Happy hour in the sundowner pizza bar is a good opportunity to have a hlf price cocktail while watcing the amazing sunsets...
Castaway is a little bit more pricy to other resorts we have been to but you definitely get what you've paid for.........

Room Tip: all bures same design just set in either garden, ocean view or beach frontage.
