Castaway Island Fiji
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed September 7, 2012

For background, I have been to a dozen Caribbean islands, Santorini in Greece and lived in Hawaii and I will say the Castaway island in Fiji is one of my favorites! We took our two boys there in July 2012 and had a great time. The island is small enough that the kids can't get lost - and they had a wonderful time playing at the beach, snorkeling, hiking and diving. My kids (13 and 16 year old boys) and wife were all scuba certified by Eric - he was an outstanding dive master. By the way, the snorkeling off the beach is quite good - lots of fish and corals to see and its easy to jump right in.

I have been to resorts in the Caribbean and I enjoyed the food at Castaways more than any of those islands. Breakfast buffets were very good and we enjoyed the meals each night as well.

By the way, the staff is extremely friendly - they made us feel welcome and were always very helpful.

On the downside, the rooms are partitioned, without solid walls between parents and kids - does cut down on the romance a bit. Also, the island is small - so there isn't anywhere 'to go' if you get bored with what the resort offers. We were there for 5 days and it was about the right amount of time for us. Note that this is a 'family' resort and if you want something for a romantic couple or partying single - some of the other very nearby islands are better choices.

Overall we loved it and would definitely like to go back. Highly recommend.

Castaway is definitely a slice of heaven with great location, snorkelling, water sports and just a wonderful place to chill and forget about the rest of the world. The bure was surprisingly larger than expected and catered for our family comfortably.
My only negative and the reason for my rating not being excellent is the service provided by some of the staff in the restaurant which needs improvement, however in general the staff around the resort were generally very helpful, particularly the guys in the water sports.

We are a couple who were invited as wedding guest in August 2012 held at Castaway for 5 days (wish it was least 7 days now); we are not into going to resorts and were only going for one reason but after staying at Castaway, we didn't want to leave, LOVED IT. Staff are so friendly, the resort is very clean and tidy and well laid out. The meal plan was brilliant, only regret, we didn't get to try everything. Food is fresh and yummy, especially the Gold Rush dessert. Drinks were reasonally priced and gift shop prices are very competitive and well stocked. Massages were enjoyable but do wish there are a few more options like facials, foot massages etc. We didn't bother going in the pool as the ocean was more inviting but if it's stated an adult pool, then adults should respect it and not allow there kids in it and at times there were kids in there; same with the Sundowner Bar at happy hour - kids free but at times there were kids up there but it wasn't really a issue. We went with other family with kids and at times we really didn't notice any kids, if anything they were so tired from Kids Club and spending time with their family. As a couple, had dinner after 7.30pm and went later for lunches, so not many kids around. But we did love it was a family friendly resort but also think they cater very well for couples. Just don't go when school holidays are on. Also request to be put on the west side, not the north side, we found we were the only ones on the beach as all the beach activities are on the north side and more sheltered area for kids to go swimming. Beach Bure is the way to go, so handy to be able to step outside and walk 3 steps to the water or for laying on the sunlounges and also nice to hear the waves crashing on the wall. So would i recommend it, definiately and even moreso for a wedding to be held there, it was very special in what they created. Kayaking and snorkelling was great.

Room Tip: Go Beachfront Bure on the Western side if you are a couple, even though we were near the helipad, it...

We just returned from an amazing trip to Castaway Island! The staff is very friendly, happy but in an honest not phoney sort of way. They looked like they genuinely enjoyed playing with my children and chatting to us. We miss them already... Despite other comments, the water is blue. Very crystal clear and blue. The bures are clean and very nicely appointed and no there isn't a TV, but that is the beauty of it. The show was fantastic as well. My only suggestion would be to have a third pool for kids between 6-18. My sons are 8 and 11 and the kids pool was filled with babies-4 year olds (perfect pool of that age) and an adult pool where they had to keep quiet and not splash around. So a pool where they could play would be a welcome addition. Otherwise it was perfect!!!!

The beautiful weather was matched with the Beautiful staff at Castaway. We arrived by boat to the sound of the staff singing after a short time to fill in paperwork and a quick refreshment we were shown to our Bure. We had a garden Bure and could see the water so I really do not see the advantage of a ocean view. We were only in the room for such short periods. The meals were lovely and the deserts were to die for , I strongly recommend the meal plans. We never gave it a thought when we ordered. Breakfasts did get abit repetative though. We walked up the mountain and the views were beautiful, it took about 25 minutes. We stopped a few times to admire the view before we got to the top. The kids went to the kids club whilst the adults ate dinner which was nice, they didnt really attend through the day. The kids loved the pools and my daughter even did a scuba dive with Mr Cool in bubbleclub which was a great experience for her, we all snorkled and utlised the catamarans. We canoed around the island which took awhile as we stopped along the way to look at coral and fish.We organised to go on the village tour where you get to travel to the neighbouring island and get to walk through the village and even get to visit the primary school and meet the principle and school kids... My kids had a great time and got to see how the locals live which isnt all game machines and shopping centres... There is a little shop which you can buy soft drinks which was great to have with our duty free alcohol for a few drinks in the afternoon before dinner on the beach... We were so relaxed and had a fantastic time at this island and we would recommend it to any family...

So there are so many good points to Castaway;

Awesome friendly staff, great food, great location, great sand / beach, awesome selection of activities (most of them free). Snorkling was great.

However... i don't recommend it for couples. The high majority of people on the island are families and although there is an "adults only" pool, most parents ignore the guidlines for who shall swim in the "adults" pool and tell their children to swim in there "quietly" - which does not happen.

Other than that, and a slightly uncomfortable bed, it was a great trip.

My suggestion, bring your family here as all the familys that we spoke to loved it, but find another island if you want to go as a couple / solo.

Room Tip: North side, south side is almost cold!!

This is our third trip to Fiji and our first to Castaway Island; it won't be our last! We travelled with our nine month old and two year old and I couldn't have asked for a better holiday.
We had a beachfront bure on the north side which I recommend. The room was great with a sliding door, so our two year old could sleep in peace (it's also brilliant the way the daybed turns around so it's like a toddler bed. My daughter was so safe and slept really well in it).
The meal plan is the way to go and is really good value, considering the high quality of food.
If you're thinking of going with young children, make sure you use the babysitting service! We had the most fantastic women look after our girls throughout the five days we were there. Sulu was really special to our two year old and read her stories and sang songs to sleep each night while we feasted by the beach! There's absolutely no need to struggle with tired kids at the dinner table when you know they're being taken care of so well.
We have kids, so it doesn't bother us, but I'm not sure why they bother with the signs about the older pool being 'adults only' when it's never enforced! As long as you love kids - you won't mind!
We'll be back again next year when we hope to go out diving; which we hear is amazing not far from the island.
It's certainly not cheap; but you really don't notice because it's so good. You will need to book pretty far in advance; but we rang them directly and got four nights in a fabulous room; so it's always worth a try!
