“Back home but still thinking of Navini!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 17, 2012

We just recently had a wonderful stay at Navini Island Resort. The staff greeted us with a smile and ‘bula’ from the moment we arrived and wherever we went around the island. We were welcomed with a tour of the main facilities on the island and a beautiful fresh fruit basket in our room. The staff went out of their way to accommodate us. If we had any questions or concerns all we had to do was ask and the staff would take care of it with a smile. The kitchen staff were great and really went out of their way to accommodate our dietary requirements/gluten sensitivity, even preparing special gluten free food for us and altering the food on the menu as we required it. Since we are used to 3 smaller meals a day we would have liked dessert as optional to be purchased separately if wanted as we found we were sometimes too full. However, the food was too delicious and fresh to be overly concerned about that. The two bedroom room we stayed in was well looked after and serviced promptly each morning. The bedding was clean and comfortable and the rooms are well designed to have good air flow, catching the wonderful afternoon breeze to cool things down. Navini is very flexible with their check out times. We were allowed to stay in our room until we had to leave in order to catch our flight. Had our room been needed by arriving guests we could have stored our luggage in a day room to maximize our stay on the island. The kitchen staff gave us an early lunch on the day of our departure as we had to leave before the scheduled lunch period. Navini offered some excellent complementary ½ day trips each morning to some of the many islands that surround it. We really enjoyed the Malolo Island village/school visit and the snorkeling trip near Honeymoon Island. Other trips offered while we were there, that we didn’t go on, were a trip to see some surf breaks, a trip to a sand cay to go swimming and snorkeling and one to Treasure Island for the morning. One of the great things about Navini was the complimentary boat trips as well as the complimentary use of their snorkeling equipment, spy boards, kayaks, catamarans, sea cycles, etc. They even gave our children a bucket each and let them pick out some beach toys to use during our stay. We really liked this option because we felt like we really got the most out of our experience, not having to worry about our bill adding up whenever we used any equipment. The snorkeling was great with many varieties of coral/fish. We also loved being able to watch the baby black tip reef sharks from the beach just in front of our bure. The friendliness of the staff, small number of bures/guests as well as the owners regularly joining in on meals and seeing the guests off all added up to giving Navini a warm, friendly, family atmosphere that made us longing to go back.

I want to make a special mention of the following staff who were exceptional (I'm sorry if I have spelt the names wrong):
- Joe who took people on morning trips (we didn't go on any because none appealed to us and we were content to stay on the island) and played Vidi Vidi at nights
- Sikeli who manned the water sports equipment and happy to prepare coconuts for you to drink/eat
- Ana, Joka and Vaulina who provided beautiful smiling faces when they served you at every meal time.
- Ari who was always happy to have a chat
- Julie who was very welcoming

I personally wouldn't return because my appetite is not big enough to get any value out of the meal deals. For the price paid I would look elsewhere. IF this was my first trip to Fiji I may have given this place a 5 star rating but I have other places to compare it to and I'm afraid it falls short in my opinion.

I'll start with the bad.

* They have 2 meal options, a 2 meal/day or 3 meal/day. If you happen to arrive in time for dinner (as we did) on your first night and leave before breakfast on your last day (and have 3 meals/day in between) they will still charge you the 2 meal/day price even if you didn't eat 2 meals. Apparently if we had only eaten 2 meals on our last day (skipped breakfast or lunch), the resort could have bundled our arrival dinner with our last day meal option to make it a 3 meal/day deal. TIP:so you don't get CHEATED, just make a mental note to check that your meal options correspond with their deals.

* It's a resort so expect resort prices for everything. TIP:buy own drinks and snacks before hopping onto your transfers

* a welcoming fruit basket was waiting for us in our room upon arrival but it was covered in ants (not an appealing welcome) and housekeeping did not clean up the ant infested fruit basket until 2 days later. REALLY GROSS!

* Meals are communal which is a great chance to meet other people and there is a drum to signal it was time to meet in the mess hall. It felt like being at school camp. You can't have meals outside of the set times.

* meals are westernised and in my opinion do not reflect what Fijians eat. Heaps of food on offer so great value if you have a HUGE appetite

* Bed sheets were terrible. It felt like I was sleeping between potato sacks. Really rough/textured material. Not what I was expecting for 600FJ /nt

* a broom may have been nice so that sand could be swept from bure in between housekeeping

* amenities (what little there was) were not replenished. We were only supplied with 1 bottle of shampoo and conditioner on arrival and we had to ask for more during our stay. No sanitary bags or cotton buds etc

* be warned of falling coconuts as they give a bit of a fright during the night

*sea lice in the ocean around the island

The good:

* heaps of food on offer with a nice variety in the menu for every meal, every day. Food was well prepared and very delicious and westernised.

*staff were always friendly and knew everyone by name, a wonderful personal touch

* heaps of water sport equipment available, never crowded on the beach or anywhere for that matter

* good snorkelling with lots of fish species but non existent soft/hard corral

* morning trips a wonderful option

Room Tip: * southside rooms had the beach (keep in mind that the sands shift) * bring own drinks and snacks i...

Navini, Owner at Navini Island Resort, responded to this review, October 13, 2012
Thank you for your special mention of good service received from Navini staff as noted, but we regret that in some other respects, Navini did not meet your expectations.
We have two meal price options, and our staff do charge only for meals attended. If having only one meal outside the 2 or 3 meal package price, then a one meal charge only is added. We do not charge for any meals not utilised.
Being an Island Resort, extra costs are incurred in bringing out drinks and supplies, however we do keep prices as reasonable as possible, and your comments on costs in this regard are surprising, as we do receive many comments from guests as to how reasonable our prices are.
Our linen sheeting is imported and we did receive a batch which although on arrival was satisfactory, with use it acquired a course feel. We started replacing this sheeting last month (Sept.) and the replacement will be completed by the end of this week.
A broom is in each bure for the purpose you mentioned; we have made note to make sure that we point out the location of the broom when introducing guests to their bures.
Amenities including soap, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, sanitary bags are normally replaced each morning when the bures are serviced. Sorry if removing the fruit basket was missed.
We are glad that you enjoyed the food, snorkelling and personal attention of the Navini staff.

We have only just got bacK and really missing Navini. It truly was an amazingly relaxing wonderful holiday with so much care and attention to detail from the wonderful staff. My teenagers loved it especially the volleyball and touch in the afternoons. What I loved was being to walk straight out of your Bure on to beautiful white sand and straight into the water, it was Paradise. Thank you, Vinaka. Rhonda, Colin, Lincoln and Brittany

We finally arrived at Navini after a 40 min boat trip from Vuda marina. We were taken to our bure (number 6) which was the largest we've stayed in on an island. The meals there were very good with a good selection.Breakfast included fruit, juice, cereal, a cooked meal and coffee. Lunch was at 1pm and there was a choice for entree, main and dessert. We ate a different meal each day which included curry, salads, meatballs etc. Dinner started at 7.30pm but most met at 7pm for a drink beforehand. The cocktails were reasonably priced between FJD$20 to FJD$28. The meals were tasty and again a variety to choose from. The lovo was yummy and good value. I loved the bread and rolls which were served at lunch and dinner. The meke was enjoyable, great voices and plenty of dancing with the staff. Ofcourse kava did the rounds too. Dining is communal and we enjoyed that as we had a chance to talk to the other guests including the lovely hosts, Helen, Arthur and Simone. Each morning at 9.30am there was a complimentary trip- I went to Plantation island resort and Musket Cove. It was interesting to visit and enjoyed the trip there which took around 45 min. Other trips included fishing, snorkelling and a visit to a nearby village. The beach on the south side was the best, a long beach with plenty of sun lounges. Baby reef sharks appeared daily around midday and the snorkelling was quite good. Lots of different fish to see and some colourful coral. The bures were cleaned well and usually done by late morning. The bathroom was roomy and plenty of hot water. The fans and fridge was quiet- perfect..There is no aircon but the windows are large and there was always a breeze. The resort has a well stocked library and souvenirs to purchase. The staff are friendly but not intrusive, always with a smile on their face. We enjoyed it as with only 10 or 11 bures it's so peaceful. Over the 7 days the weather was lovely apart from a day and a half of torrential rain and gale force winds. We were assured that the bures are cyclone proof and were relieved when the weather improved! I definitely recommend the resort to those looking for a low key resort surrounded by a beautiful beach, friendly staff and good food. Have tried twice to upload photos to this review but encountered an error!

Room Tip: All the bures are well spaced so there's privacy. I'd stay in number 6 again- south side

What wise words, because we did! There was the option to go on boat trips to other reefs but we found that the best snorkelling was on our doorstep on Navini, the best snorkelling was at the drop off in front of Bure #1 where we spent nearly every morning snorkelling, kayaking and watching the sea life and where my husband even managed to see a sea turtle!
Afternoons were spent reading or snoozing under the shade of the sun hut or circling the island looking for seashells or watching the volleyball game between staff and guests. At sunset you could watch the crabs gathering on rocks or baby reef sharks or little rays in the shallows. Most evenings after dinner were spent in the hammock gazing up at the stars and listening to the tide coming in, and every meal we left feeling as though we had eaten far too much! (They have the best bread!) The food and dancing on the lovo night were brilliant!
Thank you to Arthur, Mary, Julie and all the staff on Navini! The 21/9/12 was a wonderful day, thank you for your help and hard work! You all made our stay memorable...we will definately be back same time next year! ;-)

Room Tip: Most people snorkel off the boat ramp or on the southern side but if you follow the drop off around...

Navini has been Navini for 4 years. We were back on Navini this August after our first visit 4 year ago. Everything there was fantastic and brilliant as ever even though actually we noticed some changed things. Bures were a little bit renovated and of course they became more confortable to stay. We missed some staffs who were kind to us but we could see new friendly staffs and they were really helpful and kind too.

Access to Navini is easy and smooth. Guests can meet a staff who is waiting for guests just outside the arrival exit at Nadi Airport. He took us to Vuda Marina for a boat trip to Navini. It took just one hour (and a little bit more) from the arrival exit of the airport to Navini.
Fortunately staffs for the transfer remembered us, of course we did, and we were exchanging jokey words during the transfer to Navini. Then after getting the tiny island the first thing we did was shaking hands and hugging each other with staffs after 4 year absence.

I love Navini’s size with just 10 bures and the policy that they don’t accept day trippers. It is not necessarily luxurious and is never magnificent. Beach activities are pretty limited too. But It is quiet and never crowded there in spite of its great beach for amazing snorkeling which guests can enjoy in just 10 meters from bures. Anyway everything is slow and quiet and there is nothing which would annoy and disturb you.
Staffs are rally friendly and helpful. I saw every morning staffs collecting seaweed on the beach. Such steady efforts by Navini’s owner Arthur & Helen and staffs could have kept Navini’s clean surroundings and confortable atmosphere.

Half-day trips organized every morning were exciting and interesting. During this stay we could enjoy a couple of things we could not experience 4 years ago.
One was a snorkeling trip to Honeymoon Island where we could sea incredibly amazing coral garden as well as beautiful fishes.
The other was a trip to a local village on Malolo Island and we visited a school where we could fortunately see school dance event.
Fishing was great too. We caught some Spanish mackerels and a trevally.
Volleyball game with staffs was my favorite! Staffs are well trained and skilled. Most guests were no match for them except a honeymoon couple from Italy. Unfortunately there were less participants than during the previous stay but it’s fun.

Meal time, especially dinner time was the highlight on Navini of which communal dinning could be one of great features of Navini. I know there are some negative comments about it but it was enjoyable for us even though our English is poor.
Relaxing time after dinner was nice too, not only guests but also staffs could enjoy chatting and a board game. My wife was very afraid of conversation and communication in English for the first time but she was bold enough to speak to other guests as well as the the last time. Eventually she could enjoy socialization especially with families and couples from NZ and Europe. She says It’s a shame to have missed exchanging email addresses with some of them to send photos.

What I would like to say about food is that we would be never able to forget the nice taste of its fresh home baked bread and local potatoes served as one of Lobo feasts which were cooked with underground oven. My wife has missed Navini’s bread and she says it is definitely the best she has had on trips. My favorite was three kinds of local potatoes. White one was especially nice.

I noticed some guests who visit Navini for the first time might stay 3-4 days there, however most of returners seem to stay a week or more. I would say this could show very well how Navini is like.

We are looking forward to visiting Navini for our third visit. See you soon, all friends on Navini.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 21, 2012

It has been a week now since our return from Navini, and we all as a family are missing it. To think exactly 7 days ago my eldest son was catching his first fish on a stunning day out on the ocean. This was actually on the day we were checking out, however such is the great flexibility of Navini that were able to stay on the island until 4:30 on the day of our departure and partake in the great activities available to guests staying there up until the time of our departure.

Our latest stay there was our third visit but the first for some years. It was great to see that not much has changed and that the relaxed pace of life is still key. For the first time in years I turned off my cell phone, laptop and Ipad and had no contact with my ofice for 10 days. After day three I did not even think about it. That is the sort of place Navini is - a place to relax and wind down. Enjoy the simpler things in life.

We had Bure two on the North side of the Island so we got to appreciate some great sunsets from the hammock outsode our bure whilst enjoying and early evening drink. Then on for cocktails at 7PM to chat with other guests about what they had (or more to the point, what they had not) done that day. A lot of books read, a lot of snorkling, swimming and general relaxing.

We enjoyed several of the day excursions away from the Island, especially the visit to the village on Malolo Island were we were able to assist with the Island school by giving them some dictionaries that we had brought across from NZ. Several of the ladies of the village sell various souvenirs and trinkets. They are the same as you can get on the mainland from the gift shops. However I liked buying things here as at least some of the money was staying in the village. Another good excursion was to Mondriki Island were Castaway was filmed. Great reef, though the Island itself was a bit scruffy with a fair bit of rubbish in it. It was interesting to see the beach where Tom Hanks had looked out on a desolate horizon looking for civilisation and seeing none, where as in reality Mondriki is a very short distance from a village on a nearby island and two resorts. The power of Hollywood and good camera angles. We could not find Wilson though even though we looked, ha ha.

Back on Navini the pace of life was a slow one which was great. Guests on the island came together at meal times and this was a great time to meet people from all over the world. We were fortunate enough to meet some great people from Europe, Asia, North America and Australasia - which shows how popular Navini is globally. Though we met all these people and enjoyed all of their company and conversations, we never felt the place was crowded. On previous visits there had been less than 10 guests on the island. This time round they were full with about 24-26 guests, this is a good number. If a quiet night is your thing you can always have your meal on the beach in front of your bure. The couple next to us who were on their honeymoon took this option a couple of times.

The food was fantastic, especially (as has been noted by others) the bread, which is baked fresh daily on the island. All meals were great, though I had to limit myself as there is a definate possibility to overeat.

After the evening meals my boys enjoyed sitting down and playing vidi vidi the the staff, my youngest in particular being very competitive.

This brings me to what makes Navini so good. The people. Be it Arthur or Helen telling you stories about how they started off on Navini 30 odd years ago, Simone, Mary and Julie in the office, Vaulina, Ana, Joka and the others in the restaurant and kitchen, Sikeli, Joe, Ari and all, the other guys on the boats and round the island who were so helpful and really brilliant with our boys. Everyone there is a credit to the place, really helpful and genuinely nice.

If you were to stay on Navini you will come away with great memories and a longing for a hasty return to a little piece of paradise in the South Pacific.

Room Tip: All bures are good and lead directly onto the beach.
