We stayed in a beachfront Bure for 6 days October/November on the sunset side of the island. A very relaxing and enjoyable stay with helpful and friendly staff. The meals were quite adequate with a rather limited choice, vegatables needed more cooking and make sure that the chicken dishes are cooked properly. The fish was sometimes overcooked unfortunately.
Flies were a bit of a problem all the time which rather spoilt our outside `layabout`. Bures were spacious and kept scrupulously clean with ample tissues and toiletries supplies. My wife enjoyed a lazy time in the hammock with her book. We have visited the islands many times over the years ,this being our first with no children which made a change. This island is up with the best. High/low times for tides and sunset/rise on the board would be useful.

Had 9 wonderful nights here. Excellent facilities, brilliant restaurant, fantastic food and wonderful staff. Snorkelling off the beach just as good as the snorkelling trips. Not much activity in the evenings... Seems a bit ad hoc which is fine as it's more of a laid back affair. No children also adds to that ambiance. Very good value and spacious comfy bures and hammocks. Just need to add comfortable beach chairs to sunrise side of island. Spa facilities also a treat with great views. Sunrise side catches the north easterly and water tidal but no hesitation in planning to return. Appears either younger or older couple majority of customers, not families so much.

Stayed here on our honeymoon and this resort was just what we needed. Nothing to do but just unwind and relax. The staff here are very pleasant and friendly who do everything they can to make your stay as enjoyable and stress free as possible. The island also has many activities on hand such as scuba diving. snorkelling, day trips etc. The restaurant serves lovely food and the staff in the restaurant are lovely and attentive. The International Crab Race was definitely a highlight of my stay.

Nothing bad to say about the resort. It's target group is definitely couples who are looking for a chance to escape the real world and stay in a paradise. Looking forward to a return visit.

Room Tip: For a little added privacy ask for a bure a little way away from the reception area in the middle of...

We were excited to revisit Matamanoa Island for the third time in October 2013. We enjoyed wonderful experiences on our previous visits and were excited to be back. As soon as we stepped onto the beach, we were greeted by many familiar faces and it felt like we were being welcomed back home.

We enjoyed our clean and comfortable resort room although we did check out the new villas which are nearing completion (the land was just being cleared on our last visit) The resort still looks the same (incredible views from everywhere) and we were so happy to see that last year's cyclone didn't completely damage the house reef around the island. There are still many schools of fish, healthy corals, turtles and small reef sharks.

We did some dives with the excellent staff in the dive shop. Vura, our divemaster, was great and took us on fantastic dives. As former scuba instructors, we are really impressed at the quality of the instruction and professionalism.

Once again we decided to go with the full board option of the meal plan and were perfectly satisfied with that choice. The food was really good. There was a particularly amazing beef curry and we enjoyed the table side preparation of crepes Suzette.

Try not to go to dinner so early that you miss "bula time", especially on your first night on the island. We were very graciously invited to join in the singing as we have finally learned the greeting and good-bye songs. It was hopefully not too terrible for the other guests listening too us (as the Fijian staff all sing so beautifully) but it was a real honour for us to be included.

One of the things we like best at Matamanoa is the chance to get to know other guests and reconnect with the staff members we have met before. The staff are very friendly and personable and seemed genuinely glad to see us again. We really feel connected to Matamanoa and the staff play a huge role in that. A huge vinaka to Tima, Ala, Alena, Seko, Sirilo, Atu, Vika, Luisa, Ronni, Paul, Ben, Vura, Save, Emily, Kirby, Aku, Api, Adi, Bilo, Kama, and all the other staff members who made our vacation so special.

Hope to see you all again

Matamanoa Island is absolutely breathtaking! We fell in love with the island as soon as we caught sight of it from the boat. We were constantly wowed on arrival and throughout our stay. We had booked 3 nights in a resort room and got a free upgrade to a beachfront bure as resort rooms were booked out. We were so grateful as the beachfront bures have beautiful views of the crystal clear ocean and a hammock to enjoy them on. The rooms were always very clean and decorated with fresh hibiscus.

We couldn't thank the staff enough. They are all beautiful people and very helpful. We loved talking to them, singing and dancing with them and playing ping pong with them. A special mention to Apisai from the restaurant. He was great to talk to and play around with. The staff played a major part in how wonderful our stay was and we were genuinely sad to say goodbye.

We had purchased the full board meal plan and thought it was good value for money. The menu has a good selection and tempts you to order something you normally wouldn't. We loved the food.

There are plenty of activities to choose from. The staff in the dive shop are very helpful and run some great tours. You can snorkel and kayak around the island for free or go on a snorkelling trip for minimal costs. We didn't do any tours to other islands from Matamanoa however we wish we did as they are quite cheap compared to Denerau resort prices.

We will definitely return to Matamanoa but for much longer than 3 nights. Absolutely loved it!

Bula and vinaka to the wonderful staff of Matamanoa Island!

WE were reading all about his place and thought this was going to be great, : (
Sadly our expectations were shattered.
The staff do not greet you in a personal sense, you are treated like nothing more than cattle.
We found the room to be in a shattered, worn and in need of attention.
The air-conditioner needed fixing it stayed on 18 degree celcius.
The fan was in a state of repair with wood falling off it.
the curtains had holes in them.
The pillow were so lumpy they needed replacing.
When we ordered food, it was not what we ordered, for example chicken tandori, came as a tomatoe base and no tandori at all.
The seafood basket, came with one small piece fo fish, one prawn and 3 mussles.
the reef around the Island has a lot going for it.
The sand and views of the sunset are beautiful.
Sadly the staff seem very trapped and unhappy.
they do have new villas being built, however they are a long way from the rest of the resort.
we left after 2 nights, and so glad we did not stay for the longer time we were booked in to stay.
the fijian people are great and on this Island,

Mr & Mrs Cooper, thank you for your feedback, we welcome guest's comments regardless of their content. It seems that perhaps Matamanoa Island Resort was definitely not for you, such a shame as the post above your comment and the post(s) below your comment are very positive.

I am a little confused by a comment you made "the fijian people are great and on this Island,"
yet you also say "The staff do not greet you in a personal sense, you are treated like nothing more than cattle." and "Sadly the staff seem very trapped and unhappy." - the Fijian people on the Island are all staff, mostly from the local village.

I do hope you enjoyed the remainder of your Fiji holiday as the Fijian people are so hospitable and welcoming. Vinaka

Matamanoa Island and the resort are what dreams are made of. We came for our honeymoon and could not have been more pleased. The island consists of coral sand that feels like silk and beautiful, turquoise water. The bures are fabulous... Spacious and perfectly cleaned. There is also quite a bit of privacy. We were upgraded in the middle of our trip to the new and not yet opened villas. They have a private pool and are absolutely gorgeous. It was amazing being on an island with so few people, as you can easily get an entire beach to yourself.

I cannot say enough about the staff. We bonded with many of them and the customer service was phenomenal. My husband is an avid diver and the staff in the dive shop were incredibly knowledgable and absolutely in love with the ocean. They offer fantastic snorkeling trips as well. All of the trips/activities offered were great. I cannot say enough about this gem in the Pacific!!!
