Matamanoa Island Resort
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 27, 2012

Matamanoa island was the last island we visited after another five, and we can say it was the most beautiful one. Also the resort was one of the best of all we've been to. The sand is so white and soft, it's like walking over flour. And the water is crystal clear, amazing colours... The palm trees, all the vegetation, amazing place...
We had booked a beachfront bure for two nights and it was fantastic. The room is spacious, spotless clean, a huge comfy bed and a living room and a bar with two tall chairs. There's also a tea/coffee making facility, and a terrace with sun loungers and a hammock, perfect for reading. There's private access to the beach, it's so so beautiful you can't believe it!
We were on our honeymoon, so they gave us a bottle of champagne and a basket of fresh fruit. They also put a board with our names on the outside of the bure's door. Of course they gave us the board as a souvenir.
The food was fantastic, a very big and tasty breakfast, very nice dishes for lunch and dinner.
The spa is also recommendable. We had a relaxing double massage at sunrise, on an open-air hut overlooking the sea and the sun coming up. It was the best massage ever! We were completely renovated after that. It was kind of expensive, but worth it.
The service was great, everybody so helpful and friendly, you just want to stay!
There are some activities planned for each day, but we couldn't get to do anything because it was raining the whole day, so we just dedicated to our reading. There's also a library, in case you don't carry your own books.
The music band at night is very good too! They make you sing a song from your country the night before you leave!

As the title of this review states, Awesome is the only way to describe Matamanoa Island.
We spent eight wonderful days (12-20 Jul) on the island. From the very first step off the boat we felt like part of the family on the island. We were welcomed on the beach by a number of staff, lead by Tima the Assistant Manager. We were ushered to the bar for a welcome drink and to fill out some paperwork. Within 20 minutes we were in our room.

We stayed in a beachfront Bure. Bure 4 on the sunrise side. Wonderful room. The sunrise side was a good choice. The only passing traffic on the footpath outside the rooms was people staying in other Bures. Very, very quiet and peaceful. On the sunset side there is the path to the regular rooms and also to the staff quarters so much more passing traffic. On the sunrise side it is much easier to get down to the beach from your Bure. A ten meter walk and you are there. The beach on the sunrise side has fixed beach umbrellas and sun lounges. There is nothing like this on the sunset side.

In the rooms there was no TV, telephone or Wi-Fi access. Internet access was available for free on only one computer in the main office. It was a very busy computer!! Mobile phone signal is available on the island if you have the right sim card.

After reading reviews prior to going we weren't expecting too much from the restaurant. What a surprise. Food was excellent at all times. (The previous reviewer "Jack B" must have been staying on a different island!!). We took the half board option which gave us dinner as well as the included breakfast. We had a big breakfast everyday and usually skipped lunch or shared a club sandwich or fish kokonda. Dinner served from 7pm was a different menu on a 7 day rotation. Dinner is four courses. With the half board for dinner, you can choose any three of the four courses. If you like dessert, you should try the crepe suzette. The chef comes out and makes it at your table. Very nice. Caesar Salad is also prepared at your table.

We would usually head over to the bar for pre-dinner drinks at 6pm. The muso's start playing in the bar area from this time. Most nights very few people would be around at this time which was a bit dissapointing for the band. I am sure if the island introduced a happy hour between 6pm and 7pm more people would come and listen to the music and enjoy a drink.

Drink prices were reasonable. Certainly no more than in pubs in Canberra. Beers from FJ$8.50 for local beer up to FJ$10.50 for impoted beer. Cocktails were FJ$26.

If it is your last night on the island, the musicians would come around to your table and play a song of your choice. Their repertoire is huge. At 8.30 each night, all the staff would gather for "Bula Time". New arrivals for the day were named and a welcome song would be sung by the musicians. After that people leaving the next day would be named and farewelled with a song called "Isa Lei". It is a beautiful song which had us in tears most nights!!

All of the staff were excellent, including the less obvious grounds and housekeeping staff. After just two days just about all of the staff knew our names. It was wonderful being welcomed with a "Bula" where ever we went.

The water sports team was particularly good. Rae and her team were always around and were excellent support in all the activities we undertook. They are a funnt bunch of blokes, always laughing and smiling. We are not into Scuba but enjoyed the daily snorkelling trips to the nearby reefs. We also enjoyed a trip to a local village where some of the staff live. The entertainment team led by Seko were great too. There was no pressure to become involved in any activities. The nightly entertainment kicked off at 9pm. Bar closed at 11pm.

If you after a secluded island getaway, with no kids, Matamanoa Island may be the place for you. It is not cheap, especially for a Bure, however it is a wonderful, wonderful place. We will be going back. We met a couple celebrating their 50th wedding annivesary. They were on their 13th visit to the island!!

Room Tip: Go with a sunrise side Bure. Awesome.

The manager was friendly as was our guide who took us on a walk up the volcano in the middle of the island, and kayaking around the island was fun. Here ends the good news. The food was inedible - "grilled" fish was in fact fried; when I asked them to make sure it was grilled the next time I ordered it, they fried it and picked off the crispy fried bits. It was worse than school dinner every time, to the extent that I ended up skipping meals.

The restaurant staff are so unfriendly - I dare you to try sending back any of the food (which you WILL want to do) - I dread to think what they do to it behind closed doors.

The diving school has an air of nonchalance, and not in a wonderful island-style - it just seems unsafe. We decided not to SCUBA dive with them based on this intuition, and went for a snorkelling trip instead - if need be we could swim back to the island. The boat broke down on the way back - no surprises there!

Fiji as a whole was a complete let down - a disappointing few days on this island (if it had been our honeymoon, heads would have rolled), and the worst flight of our lives with Air Pacific on the way home (again inedible fried and reheated food after wasting hours in a poorly equipped airport).

Do what I should have done: avoid Fiji and hit up the Cook Islands instead.

Room Tip: Make sure your room is far away from the pool (noisy Americans cavorting in it all night) and away f...

We chose Matamonoa due to its no children policy and were rewarded with a fantastic relaxed holiday. We had to shift between 3 different rooms while we were there due to us being a bit late booking and the Beachfront bungalows not being available for the whole period. This was not a problem as the staff happily shifted our bags between rooms. This also gave us a chance to try the other rooms.
We particularly likes the Beachfront Bungalows on the Sunrise side, with beautiful views over a lovely sand beach with plenty of sunbeds and fixed beach umbrella's (and coconut trees for shade). The sunset side had great views, but only a small and partly rocky beach with no sunbeds or umbrellas on the beach. We stayed in rooms 3&4 Beachfront Bungalows and room 28 resort room. All rooms were quite modern and tidy but had consistant lack of maintenence issues. Without bagging the place we were faced with lots of small by annoying issues including all 3 rooms had loose toilet seats, one had a door handle falling off that i had to fix to get in, rollers on the from sliding doors didnt roll and you had to man handle the door to get it open and shut, light bulbs not working etc etc. Like I said nothing big but just a bit extra effort by the management and this place would be absolutely excellent.
Staff wise they were quite plesant and helpful with 2 particular notes being Kasa in the restaurant who was the nicest friendliest person I have met, to Kama (also in the restaurant who had no personality at all and should be removed from frontline duties (management please note).
We went fishing on thier trolling trip and caugh some great fish. The skipper Colly is very good and was a very professional operator. The boats are fairly knocked around but are in survey as required. Cost was $540FJ and worth it if you can share with another person.
Make sure you take the walk up to the top of the mountain for a great view of the other islands and surrounding reefs as well as an awesome spot to watch the sunset. The track is very steep and slippery so wear suitable footware when doing the climb. Also a shot walk around to the northern beach (opposite end to the resort) reveals a protected lovely beach from the prevailing SE trade winds and also a rocky headland to mount your name placard (that has been provided and hung on your door by management)
Overall an really nice resort with lots of snorkeling and exploring options that is being let down by a general lack of maintenence that wouln't cost much at all to fix.

Room Tip: Sunrise side Beachfront Bungalow # 4 is my pick

Before we had decided to go to Matamanoa Island Resort, we have done a lot of investigations. And we were NOT disappointed! The resort deserves 5 stars! Extremely clean and convenient rooms (we stayed in a beachfront bure), very friendly staff, great entertainment, plenty of daily activities, great food. We could not really see any inconsistency in food (as mentioned by other travellers). We just fell in love with this place, and have already decided to go there again, this time for at least 8 nights (we have stayed there for 6 nights).

Beautiful resort
Excellent rooms - comfy beds - quiet air-con
Staff were friendly, kind and attentive to our needs
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner - all delicious :)
Snorkeling trips - only $11FJD each day - Fantastic!! Different location each day, 30 minutes of guided snorkeling - well worth it :)
Take a short hike up to the top of the mountain - breathtaking views!
Adults island - we'd previously stayed on 2 other islands with family resorts, so it was very refreshing to be on an island with adults only.
Perfect for any occasion
Band was very talented - wonderful voices and great on the guitar. Impressive to see they could almost play anything you requested.
Would definitely go back again!!!

Room Tip: Go the extra and get a beach front bure - nice to be so close to that beautiful water!

My partner and I chose the helicopter transfer to & from the island and thought for the extra expense, was well worth it for the experience and time saved. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel very welcomed. Very impressed with the resort room - clean, comfortable and a good size.
Meals were excellent. Service was outstanding and the ambiance was perfect either day or night. The resort caters for a maximum of about 68 adults which was great for us because we wanted it quiet. Ample deck chairs and shade umbrellas for all guests who just wanted to laze around. There was also enough fun activities to keep us interested if we wanted to partake with others.
Snorkelling was great - a boat goes out just off the island each day for $11FJ for about one hour. Also snorkeling directly off the beach where they provide free snorkelling gear.
What we particularly enjoyed though was the hand line fishing where a boat takes about 6 people just off the island once a day (except Sunday). Cost was $11FJ for 2 hrs - absolute bargain. We caught some nice descent size fish which the chef cooked up for us with vegetables that night at a cost of $20FJ each. Can't beat fresh fish.
Modriki Island (Castaway movie) day tour on the Sea Spray yacht was a great trip that provided BBQ lunch on board.
The crepe suzette for the dinner dessert was especially yummy. Eli (dessert chef) entertained us with his flambeing expertise.
The guitar players were especially talented and seem to know any song that people requested as they moved around the restaurant.
All up, a great holiday for 8 nights which was about the perfect length of time for us.

Room Tip: Resort rooms are fine - excellent value for money.
