“Frustratingly fantastic!”
Reviewed June 29, 2013

Having just spent a week at Mana Island Resort, I can understand the widely varying reports this place gets in TripAdvisor.

So let's get out of the way the not so good bits. If you are looking for 5 star, it isn't. If you are looking for wanna-be Michelin star culinary delights, you will be disappointed. If you are looking for a "looks like it was only built yesterday" ambiance, it wasn't and hence isn't. At times. you need to park your expectations of everything being perfect and accept that service at the South Beach Restaurant can be a bit hit-and-miss and the food will range from would-have-been-OK-but-served-cold to a-bit-better-than-OK. And if your not one for tolerating a lot of young kids under your feet, Mana is not for you.

What makes Mana Island are three things: the location, the facilities and, most importantly, the staff.

The location really does have the look and feel of paradise. The resort is sandwiched between two magical beaches that host some spectacular marine life at high tide and accommodate very safe swimming and water sports for people of all ages and at all levels of ability.

The resort also features a great range of facilities with all sorts of motorised and non-motorised water sports, fishing charters and scuba diving. Our 13 and 15 year old got to complete their PADI open water divings accreditation in the week that we were there - thanks a million to Jonetani for his steady patience and good humour along the way.

And, to a person, the staff at Mana Island Resort were genuinely friendly and constantly doing their best to make our stay a memorable experience. Their attention to our interests and needs was first class and simple things - such as remembering the kids names - made us feel very special indeed.

We can't recommend Mana Island Resort highly enough.

Our first family holiday overseas, so glad we went to Fiji and in particular Mana Island which was recommended by my travel agent. We stayed in the Island bures which were very clean and maintained daily to the same standard. The outdoor shower was a real hit with the kids. I had read many reviews about the water not being hot well....it certainly was hot. Hair braiding was the first stop for the girls. I highly recommend going to the village past south beach, go pass the backpackers and the first blue house on the left. Ask for Emily she was great and really understood how the girls wanted it done. A real highlight for the kids was the school, they really appreciate anything you can give them....books, sports gear, pencils or donations as they are hoping to build another classroom soon. I personally thought the food at the buffet was good (despite the many reviews), it is Fiji and a very open air restaurant, sure there are flys but it is hot and humid which flys love. The variety of food was good, very fresh and most importantly well priced remembering kids eat free! The Fijian people were absolutely delightful, the staff were always trying to please and great with the kids as well. After a week on Mana we stayed at the Raddison on Denarau for 3 days which was like any 5 star hotel. The big questions is would we go back and the answer is YES...and that would be to Mana Island it met all our expectations! Thanks for a woderful holiday.

Room Tip: All the rooms are very different. The Island bures were small but great value, clean and if you are...

We had a lovely welcome to Mana Island with the Fijian singing and guitar playing. The water was suburb and the sandy beach lovely and white. We stayed in a south Beachfront suite. We were 2 adults and 3 kids and it was gorgeous. I couldn't believe how close to the beach we were. One day we all had a mocktail on the beach. You really feel like you are on an island. The south beach restaurant looked modern and very nice but we pre paid for breakfast buffet on the North beach only and paid for dinner ($65) Fijian each, kids free. We didn't have lunch as it would have been too much to eat and if the kids were hungry they had an ice-cream. We were happy with the north beach restaurant, so we never went to the south. It's not the Hilton, but you find what you like & stick to it. Each night has a different theme. Oriental (good) or the Lovo, loved that too. The snorkelling on the south beach was beautiful, afternoon was the best time. We saw angel fish, parrot fish and many more colourful and interesting fish. The north beach was lovely for soft coral. There are lots of activities each day in the kids club & for adults. Hat, fan, bag weaving from coconut palms. Bingo for $1F by the pool at 5pm each day. Fun. Crab racing at night too. Lots of activities, you must stay for at least 7 days or you'll be sad you missed something! Things aren't perfect and a little worn, but you can't beat the Fijian people. Be patient and go with the flow. We saw a couple of people who perhaps expected the Hilton, but it's not that kind of place. We loved it so much and would love to go back for at least 10 days! I'll never forget the performance my 3 kids did in the main lounge one night. They were taught some traditional dance and song and wore the grass skirts and face marks. My 4 year old Amelia misses Big Bear very much! The ladies in the kids club are beautiful and if you have a nanny for you child they will be well cared for, they love the children. Wananavu! To Mana and their staff.

Room Tip: Bures are sweet and are in the middle of the Island, South beachfront an excellent choice, you are r...

Another fantastic family holiday with others friends at magical Mana Island !! This is definitely the place to go for powdery sandy beaches, crystal clear water, to find Nemo snorkelling and to relax. The staff are so friendly and are great with the children and kids club is just a bonus.

There are many different options of accommodation available depending on location and configuration you require and are all nicey appointed.

We are no strangers to Mana Island and belong to the returnees club and always enjoy coming back each year. One of the big benefits is that it has a north and a south beach - therefore you can always get out of the wind. The recently appointed Adults only pool is welcomed as is the cafe bar. The sunsets are stunning and can be admired every night from the pool bar while playing bingo.

You must treat yourself at the Mana Spa - this place is a little slice if heaven on its own. The newly refurbished South Beach Restaurant is still the preferred place to dine in the evening - only comment is that the menu doesn't change much from each visit. There is a beach bar along South Beach and the staff wait on you :-) so no need to have to crawl off your lounger which has been pulled down into the warm water.

As with most resorts the grounds etc are an on going maintenance and upgrade process and are still getting back up to scratch after the recent cyclone.

Keep in mind that you are on a tropical island and enjoy accordingly ! Hotel holidays are on Denerau and the Ritz is in Paris

Our 1st visit out to an Island in Fiji and so glad our Travel Agent mentioned Mana!!! Our family had an excellent time their. The best snorkelling experience we have had in Fiji yet. Try all 3 beaches - North, South and especially Sunset Beach (just remember to pack a picnic basket and a umbrella for shade) and see how this Beach lives up to it's name!) Oh, don't forget your camera too.
Well worth the extra pennies for beachfront accommodation! We were all very impressed with our 2 Bedroom Beachfront Bure and the cleanliness of the resort. Enjoyed the chats with the friendly staff was well as the crew at Aqua Trek - thanks guys, the dive was excellent. This "dive bug" has bitten and we are planning our next dive already. Hope to see you all real soon. Special thanks to the activities crew, Chokapeti, Watson and last but certainly not least the informative crew about the releasing of Emmy the Turtle - a very memorable and heart-warming occasion.

Room Tip: Beachfront bures are fantastic but be prepared for wind

I've never been to Fiji before so for the price I paid I expected unbelievable rooms. I was extremely lucky as they upgraded me to the honeymoon suite. This was an extremely nice room and exactly what I expected. If you can make it to these suites I highly recommend. Besides the area I stayed I thought the grounds in general were very messy and unkept. I also got a look at the regular rooms and let's just say I wouldn't have stayed in them and asked for an upgrade or my money back. Before I went I read up on the reviews and read quite a bit about the neg reviews on the food. Well it's true, the food is an area they really need to work on. I'm not sure with all of the complaints and write-ups they haven't improved on this area. On a positive note the staff was extremely nice and helpful. I also went diving and had a great time with the guys in the Dive shop.

Room Tip: Get the honeymoon suite...

We stopped at Mana for lunch while on the Island Hopper day trip from Musket cove. All I can say is, if you do this, eat at the a la carte restaurant, DO NOT bother with the buffet restaurant. Lunch on Mana Island was the low point of our 5-day stay.

We were tempted by the promise of the 'fresh BBQ' buffet, even though it was a relatively expensive $FJ30. The only good thing is you can stuff yourself with as much average food as you can stand. The actual BBQ was not bad but very tiny portions you had to queue up for, the rest of the food we sampled was either average or just plain bad. We ordered a beer and a softdrink and asked for water.

Then the real fun began - after we sat down with our food we were mobbed by a waitress who told us we were meant to pay for the buffet before we got our food. And that we should pay for our drinks after we ate. Fine. We handed over our cash and ate our food, waiting for our water. My husband tried to pay for our other drinks with a $20 note, but we were told they'd have to go looking for change - mind you, only $7 change. By the time we'd finished our dessert, after waving down several staff, we still had no change and no water. Finally they brought us water - turns out water here isn't free, they brought us room temperature bottled water we were expected to pay for. My husband was so tired of dealing with them we took one bottle, bringing our drinks bill to $18, and told them not to worry about the change just so we could get out of there.
