“Musket Cove”
Reviewed October 8, 2013

From the moment we stepped off the boat we started to relax into Fiji Island
time.
Have been to Fiji several times, but first time to an Island resort. A great
place to completely unwind and forget about the stresses of work and life.
We were there during the start of school holidays but you wouldn't have
known it, the resort is well laid out and spacious and never felt busy.
Snorkelling, kayaking and cycling stopped the guilt of being in lazy mode.
You actually get time to read books and just enjoy the views. Having a
marina also adds an interesting dimension to the place, we spoke to a few
intrepid yachties sailing their way around the world. There is a store and
cafe near the marina which are very handy. The massages are also
recommended.

Room Tip: Armstrong Villas very spacious and quiet

We travelled with a group nad had others staying in nearby resorts. We were very pleased we picked Musket Cove. The ambience was restful and unhurried even though it was school holidays.
The rooms/houses were delightful. Roomy quiet and clean. The food was great, the service for drinks was slow but we did enjoy the cocktails. We did enjoy the dinner and show. We did eat at Lomani with family staying there and this ws very nice too. Priced similarly to Musket its a goodm option, We also ate at Plantations Black Coral restaurant, Again very nice about the same price. Our family had a meal plan but the children all ate earlier and had a babysitter so all our family could eat together that night. We our family organised a charter on a big sailing boat, It was a real treat. We all caught it at Plantation jetty and we had a delightful morning cruising learning about the area and resorts we past and they took us to the best snorkelling places we had seen. They were very knowledgable and helped our children Identify the fish they saw by description and they had reference books on board. It was the highlight of our trip. We did other trips, the daily snorkelling from Musket which wasn't nearly as good or professionally organised as our cruise but a good option if you only have a short stay. We did an Island hopper which we were disappointed in. We thought we would go to Islands but we only stopped at Mana and were out for 5 hours. Overall we thought a great place to stay for our age group (Grandparents). Well done Musket Cove on the tranquility you have achieved.

My family and I recently returned from our stay at Musket Cove Resort. There was 3 groups, my parents, my brother and his 2 year and us (my husband & I with our 1 year old baby). This was the most relaxing, most peaceful holiday for us. We couldn't have been happier with the trip.

My brother's family and my family were positioned together in bures 56 & 57 and my parents were in garden bure number 53. The position of these bures were perfect for all of us. The 2 little ones had a MASSIVE lawn to run around and play on at their front doorstep. We spent ages crab hunting with the boys (you should see the size of the crab holes. So cool). And just at the edge of this lawn is the beach. What more could children want? Admittedly if your kids are a little older they may require more entertainment like a playground etc. There is a playground at Plantation Island (just 2 minute walk) which we popped over and used a couple of times. But really, our little ones were happy just to frolic whilst we took turns watching them and sitting in the shade sipping our drinks.

No shortness of activities either. I'm not certain if all packages are the same, but with our accommodation we had heaps of free activities including; snorkelling tours (2 daily), village tours, coconut cutting demonstration (we weren't fussed about going to this but were so glad we did - they made such a fuss of the boys making boats and sunglasses out of branches etc. and it was really interesting) and we had free use of kayaks, canoes, snorkel gear, etc. I would suggest doing water activities in the morning whenevr possible as the winds can pick up in the afternoon a little bit (or at least they did when we were there).

As there were 3 sets of adults we didn't have cause to use the babysitting option, however we would have done so confidently if need be. The Fijians are so wonderful with children. They just know how to hold them and what to do to make them smile. It was so refreshing to see how involved the Fijian men in particular were with the babies. Would scoop them up and cuddle them and goo and ga, it was just lovely to watch.

Buffet breakfast was also included in our package. We're not fussy eaters at all and the food was basic, but good. We tucked into a big breaky every morning and took supplies with us (cheese and biscuits etc) from Australia to snack on during the day. As anyone who has done an island holiday will be aware, island prices for simple items are dear. That's just the way it is. A little preparation will save you a fair bit. But for what we did buy there we didn't find anything too ridiculous. Same prices as Australia really. We ate most dinners in the restaurant. Again, good meals, good sizes. Between $30 - $40 FJD for a meal from memory. The staff are also brilliant musicians and perform every night (except Sundays) for guests after dinner.

Oh and make sure you indulge in a spa treatment or 2. They are amazing! The chocolate massage and the lime wrap, wow!

To sum it all up, we couldn't have been happier with the holiday. Everyone came back very miserable as we didn't want to leave (which is always a good sign) and I would recommend Musket Cove to anyone.

Oh and as a foot note, we misplaced some items we purchased from the village tour we went on. I believe I threw them in the bin by mistake. As I was devastated about losing our little trinkets, the island GM was (is) in direct communication with me about these items and has agreed to have someone re-purchase them on my behalf on the next tour out and post them to me. "After sales" service like this are what stand out in people's memories and it's a great thing to have a manager that is aware of this.

Oh, and one last thank you to one of the waitresses Lithey. She was particularly friendly and looked after us particularly well. So a big thank you to her as well.

Spent 3 days at Musket cove resort on our way to the Solomon Islands, what a great little gem in Fiji, we did two days of diving with the dive operator at the resort and also had a great time with them, knowledgeable and safe.
The rooms were large and clean, very basic but perfect for the location.
Food was great, plentiful and a good variety.

Room Tip: We stayed in the garden view rooms and they were centrally located.

Had a great holiday with family. Muskcat was recommended by my daughter who has also visited.
loved the rooms quite spacious and each little house stands alone so is very quiet. They are cleaned daily.
Meals were nice with lovely presentation.
Loved being able to walk along the beach. The coffee shack did excellent coffee and sausage rolls a must for morning tea. The shop was well stocked with the things we needed so we were able to have fruit and toast in our room when we felt like it. We were also able to go to Lomani for dinner one night also nice.
Our only disappointment was the water activities and the bikes. We hired bikes to ride around to Lomani to book dinner. They were both defective and there was only one replacement which had a bent wheel so it was strange to ride. Took it back too and walked. Had been recommended the dolphin tour but very disappointed. It was really rough and although there was quite a few from Muskcat we picked up families with little children from Plantation on a big landing craft boat. While it was stable I guess it pounded in the waves and the children were frightened. We went out in the Ocean. It was to rough for us to snorkel in the deep water. The video I saw from my daughters trip was very different so not sure why it was like it was. It wasn't suitable for us older folk. Similarly we wanted to do the sightseeing tour but were put on a speedboat type boat which was an Island hopper tour we found out when on the boat. It stopped for a quick snorkel which we didn't want to do then went to Mana Island. Its like Plantation Island so again thought we would see more islands and be told about the area. It was really rough coming back which again didn't suit us or our family. Would be better to have come back earlier before the wind. We did comment to the staff and ask about it but they were very off hand so we recommend you watch the weather. It was windy every afternoon we were there.

Room Tip: Our family had a selection of rooms all good

Bula and nice to hear you enjoyed your stay.
Sorry about the bikes. We have 60 beach cruiser push bikes in a container and on the way. Re watersports, again I'm sorry. Two companies operate tours and excursions on our behalf. The cheaper company shares with Plantation Resort. The more expensive option operates exclusively for Musket guests. Which would have been the better option. I only wish our team did a better job of explaining.
Unfortunately weather and sea conditions are out of our control. But again, we could have done better at giving you options.

Two of my girlfriends and myself stayed three nights at Musket Cove, Fiji, late September 2013 as part of a girls getaway. As it was our first time in Fiji, we weren't sure what to expect. I can tell you Musket Cove is beautiful with pristine white beaches (during high tide), beautiful hibiscus flowers everywhere and a relaxed vibe. The main pool is gorgeous! A small general store has all the essentials for snacks and other assorted items.
Highlights: The main dining/drinks area near the pool is a beautiful, laid back area to spend your time - cocktails made to order, nice food and a beautiful pool. The spa is fantastic - my girlfriends and I indulged in traditional Fijian bobo massage for the equivalent of $35 australian dollars and we had our nails painted for under $10! The ladies working in the spa are lovely. The nearby Lomani resort was magical - it's adults only and we had two lovely dinners there and we're treated to a traditional Fijian dance demonstration on one of the nights. At Lomani, the staff set up a table and chairs for us directly on the beach and it was beautiful to dine by starlight with the sound of the waves lapping at the beach. The garden burre we stayed at on Musket Cove was clean and comfortable and had a fantastic view of the beach - I would recommend asking for a garden burre near the airstrip (only 1 helicopter used the airstrip the whole time we where there). If you want to snorkel off the beach, walk up to Plantation Resort - great snorkelling directly from the beach. The breakfast buffet was included in the price of the accommodation at Musket Cove and was plentiful and the omelettes made to order were delicious!
Lowlights: the lunchtime food at Musket Cove could improve - whilst there are pizzas available at the main area and pies, wraps and sausage rolls at the pink coffee shack, my girlfriends and I were hoping for seafood or a chicken salad!! Some fruit or healthy options during the day would be welcome. Whilst there were some staff that were wonderful, overall the customer service was disappointing - we found it hard to get anyone to catch our eye when we wanted to order food or a drink and we found ourselves chasing staff to take our order. We found the same type of attitude at reception and the activities hut - whilst everyone said 'bula'' when we walked in, we found that no-one was really interested in helping us and we felt we were being pains just for asking if we could buy an Internet voucher, book a cruise, order a drink or get a seat for dinner. Though once we asked for something, it was given straight away - there was none of this 'Fijian time' - everything came quickly!
Overall, MusketCove is a magical location and is perfect or couples or families. Be prepared to walk everywhere! It's a sprawling resort and we walked and walked and walked to get around the resort. If you have young children, bring prams! I also think buggy transfers between the resorts would be great as we spent a lot of time at the nearby Plantation resort for snorkelling and Lomai resort for eating. Keep in mind my girlfriends and I are fitness instructors and have a high level of fitness - daily walks to and from the other resorts may be out of the reach of some people.

Bula so nice to hear you enjoyed your first Fiji visit. I remember your group and seeing how much fun you all had. Your fitness is impressive.
Just wanted to clarify about our lunch menu. It sounds as though you were referring to someone else. Because we have several seafood options. Including - A calamari salad with green papaya and fresh coconut & A mixed Asian style mixed seafood salad with namjin. Also a King prawn cocktail, Chicken caesar just to name a few.
Your comment about service is surprising, but taken on board.
Lomani is a nice spot and lovely alternative to dine. But it must be kept in perspective. Their pricing is much higher than Muskets.
Thanks for your feedback, you've given me some excellent training points.

My new husband and I have just gotten home after a 3 week trip to FIji, during which we got married at Musket Cove.
We stayed at Musket Cove for a week with our families, and had the wedding in the middle of that time. The wedding was organised over email with Gloria and everything was just perfect. We got married on the beach at low tide (just as stunning as hide tide), and then had drinks and canapés at the island bar, followed by sunset photos and the wedding dinner which was set up by the pool. The food was great and the day was seamlessly organised by Gloria. An extra special touch was returning to our bure at the end of the night to find that the maids had been in to our room and had laid out "congratulations" on our bed in flowers and left a bottle of wine and a letter thanking us for choosing Musket Cove as our wedding destination.
The rest of the week was just as good, with the resort easily coping with all 21 of us. The island is beautiful and there is so much to do. Our group went kayaking, paddle boarding, diving, snorkelling, on a boat trip out to Cloud 9 and on a "take a break" sunset cruise.
In the evenings we mostly ate at the main restaurant, which was great every night. On one of the nights we all bought BBQ packs and went out to the island bar which was a nice change. You can also eat at the Plantation restaurant on the other side of the airstrip, but some of our group tried there and weren't impressed.
We stayed at 3 other resorts during out week in Fiji (Sonaisali, Mana Island and Fiji Hideaway), but Musket Cove was by far the best and we're so glad that we chose to have our wedding there.
Thanks Musket Cove for a week none of us will forget. We're looking forward to coming back from a wedding anniversary in the future.
