“Hard to Beat”
Reviewed August 19, 2010

I took a group of 50 singles to the Plantation Island Resort for 4 nights as part of our Fiji Vacation with Singles in Paradise. Everyone was very happy with the resort and it's location. With the location you can visit several of the smaller islands on an island hopping day but there are more options on this island with 4 different restaurants within walking distance. The accommodations are not luxury but the rooms are large, typically with a bedroom and livingroom. Many of the people in our group were upgraded to oceanfront units.

We did not use the diveshop on the property as I got the feeling they were not prepared for a large group so we dealt with the dive shop at Musket Cove called Subsurface Fiji. I wouild highly recommend this company. The equipment was new and they took us to outstanding dive sites including a wreck tha was very interesting. A couple of us stayed at the Lomani Resort right next door. It's a bit pricier but they've got a nicer oceanfront pool, the accommodations are nicer and there are no children allowed there. They also will bring you breakfast to your room, included in the stay there!

They have a buffet but you can also order off the menu. Then there's the restaurant at Musket Cove called Dicks that was very good. We went on Asian night where you pick the meat and vegetables that you want cooked in the wok and they cook it up for you. I would also recommend the dining at the Lomoni. Basically with 4 nights, you will probably want to try all 4 of the restaurant choices.

The snorkeling is also very good here. They offer a free snorkeling boat trip twice a day and take you out to this sand bar. There was plenty to see with plenty of coral and fish.

I was very satisified with the way things went at this resort and would recommend it. Oh, here's another tip: they do not sell hard liquor in the markets there, so before you leave the airport get some from duty free to bring with you.

We took a day trip over from Denarau Island to assess whether we wanted to spend some days in this resort.
We were appalled by the state of the rooms or "bures"!The front desk clerk who took us around to see the room walked right beside a dead cockroach on the floor and didn't even notice or break his stride. The room looked like a seedy motel from the sixties, with no renovations since!
We quickly asked for a much better class of room or lodging and was very, very slowly and grudgingly shown the "higher" class of room and we could not believe that we were expected to pay whatever they were asking for that!
When we asked the clerk if that was the absolute best they had and if there was something better he could show us, he replied with, "Are you taking this room because I am very busy at the front desk."
That from someone who was walking us at such a snail pace that made us think that he had nothing better thing to do all day than show us these rooms! With that we quickly turned on our heels and exited the "bure" and the resort to find more decent lodging on the island.
This resort could only be described in the USA as a 2 star, if that. Do not believe anyone else's rating if it is higher.
We walked to the next resort, on the beach, across the airstrip ,to "Musket Cove Resort".
I will review that hotel under that heading.
Let me just go back to the cove that this resort is on. There is a fast catamaran that takes tourists to this island from the Denarau port, and several tour companies tout this island as "beautiful reefs and sparkling waters" "snorkelling and swimming to your heart's delight", etc.
The truth is that we got there at 8:45 AM and we were wowing and oohing and aahing at the gorgeous bay and beautiful waters and dreaming about the ways we can laze around that fabulous scene.
From that hour all the way to 5:00 PM the sea receded so fast into the lowest tide you have ever seen! The whole bay receded into nothing!!! There was about 1/2 mile out and 1 mile across of beached shells, broken off corals, and a coral shelf that was devoid of all life, all water. It looked exactly like a desert, only wet.
My husband who swims and snorkels about 2 hours daily was aghast at the scene before him. All he was dreaming about when we landed disappeared into the reef way beyond.
The sea did not begin to come back in until 5:00 PM, no exaggeration. We were stuck swimming in a pool with 20 other families while the sea was away.
At 5:00 PM the catamaran came to take us back to Denarau. Good news, we did not stay to see that debacle happen another day.
If your idea of a vacation on a tropical island is lounging around in front of a swimming pool with your family all day, then this might be for you, but why go all the way to Fiji?
Without the white sands UNDER a crystal clear ocean, it is not the Fiji that you would fly 11-16 hours and pay for.

I find it very strange that you would post a review about a resort that you did not stay at. Most of your review does not actually relate to your experience at Plantation Island Resort which was brief to say the least.

I'm not sure which rooms you were shown at Plantation, but I can tell you that the Hotel rooms, Studio Garden Bures, 2 bedroom bures and beachfront bures received a complete refurbishment in 2007 and a soft refurbishment in 2009 (the fabric that was chosen does look a little dated - local taste I'm afraid! - but we will rectify this shortly with imported materials). The Poolside Rooms and Deluxe Garden Terraces are new accommodation built in 2007 and the fabrics in these rooms are bright and more modern.

The rest of your review was actually about Musket Cove as you very clearly state that "We walked to the next resort, on the beach, across the airstrip ,to "Musket Cove Resort"."

The beach at Plantation is not as you have described it (because you were no longer at Plantation at this stage in your review). We are very fortunate at Plantation that even when the tide goes out, guests are still able to swim directly in front of the resort near the boatshed.

It is a pity that you did not ask anyone about the snorkelling options on the island. Everyone here knows that when the tide goes out the best place to snorkel is at the sand bank located 500m offshore from the island. Here the coral and marine life are vibrant and plentiful, and this spot can only be accessed at low tide.

We get about 2 high tides and 2 low tides a day on the island. The times and heights of these tides vary from day to day. If it was high tide when you arrived on the island, then it would have been low tide approximately 6 hours later at 2:30pm. It is unfortunate that part of your day was "spoiled" by low tide, however our regular guests could have told you that this is not the case every day as the tides change on a daily basis.

Looking at the other reviews that you have posted on TripAdvisor, it is clear that you did not enjoy any of the hotels that you visited during your trip to Fiji. Perhaps next time you should research your trip more thoroughly to avoid disappointment. Maybe then you would be able to appreciate the beauty of our country - the beautiful beaches, culture and of course the incredibly hospitable and generous people.

We were nervous with the commencement of our first overseas journey with 4 children (8, 6, 3, 1). We arrived at Nadi airport to be greated by our tranfer to Plantation Island on the Malolo Cat. People were so freindly and very helpful with the kids. As soon as we arrived on Plantation Island we new we had made a great choice, shell lei greeting and so many warm, smiling faces. We stayed in a garden bure, plenty of room and opposite the beach. Great food, service, activities and kids club and baby sitting just superb!!

Lovely location - stayed in a beachfront bure - literally a 5 second walk into the water - with gorgeous views. Fairly basic accommodation but it was clean. With an active 3 year old boy, it was good not to have anything really nice in the bure that could be damaged!

Great for kids - loads of activities but a lot of it is ageing and I would question the safety of some parts of the resort from this perspective.

Don't expect a sparkling resort - it's not! It's huge and dated. But you're not paying massive amounts per night so I suppose you take the good with the bad. Staff were pretty good.

Food - very average in the restaurant and buffet. A couple of good snack outlets for hot dogs, hamburgers and really good banana smoothies. There's also a couple of mini-marts (try the one at Anandas - cheap and well stocked).

Would I go again? - Probably. Great place for kids and lazing about. Just need to manage the expectations re food and facilities. Lovely beach and great access to water activities. I split the holiday between sofitel (really good food on denerau resorts) and plantation. Best way to get best of both worlds. Connections were all great too!

We spent 11 days at Plantation Island , getting home on the 1st August , and as the title of our blog says ' Can't wait to get back' . As many travellers do , we had looked at Trip Advisor to help pick our destination. We had read some rather worrying reports. But all I will say is that in my opinion, the negative reports were completely wrong . The place is paradise. Yes it is 3 star and you get what you pay for. I would have absolutely no problems recommending this place to any family with young children. Our three girls are 7 , 9 and 11 and they loved the swimming, dining and friendly atmosphere at Plantation Island. It is a resort that caters for the kids , but do not worry my wife and I loved it to. The staff were excellent , nothing was a problem for them. Make sure you take some pegs with you for your clothes line ( they just made drying swimmers easier) . The only concern we had was the voucher system for meals. We had gone with a specialist holidays package, that had both Meal Deal and Meal Plan vouchers, and there was more options available with the Meal Plans. A great suggestion would be for Plantation Island to put a bit more informantion on their Web Page , as if you have a third child they are not entitled to the buffet .Whilst this was not a problem it was a bit confusing at the start. We are still mourning from our mid- morning cream bun fix from the supermarket next to Ananda's; absolutely delicious but none available in our country town !!!
Plantation Island has been the best holiday we have ever been on , and we will never forget the beauty of the resort and its staff. Vinaka .

WE are a family of five, and had a wonderful break at the Plantation Island Resort. The weather gods turned on a great 8 days - not a drop of rain, mid 20's to mid 30's. This was our first visit to Fiji in 14 years and I was a bit worried after read a couple of reviews but the resort was great and better than expected.. Yes it is a 3 star resort, but not 3 star stay for us as compared to other island in the Pacific where have visited. The resort is large and growing all the time. The staff were always friendly even when the resort was at full on a couple of nights. We stayed in Bure 402, out the back just pass the large pool. The unit was huge and always cleaned and serviced well. The only problem was the bites we got during the night but the insect spray supplied in room did reduce these over time. 402 was a good location for the pool area but a good walk to the restaurant, kids clubs etc. The food plan 1 (3 meals) seems dear when we booked, but we found it good value and choice for us as we also paid for this plan for the children and they have lots of choice too . If you go on Kids free Free or some of the other promo , their is very limited choice for the children and restrictions for the adults too. Plantation 's shop were good value - Biniki's $100 F and same one $140 NZ at home, the only things a bit dear was sun block if you run out and potato chips. Ice creams was cheap from the supermarket by the airpstrip. We will go back, and stay again here soon ... well when the finances are up to it.

We have just had our wedding here in the school holidays and just loved it. It was so relaxing and there are lots of activities to do if you dont feel like spending a day in the hamock. The wedding was so easy a couple of days before we sat down with the wedding co-ordinator and about 20 mins later everything was organised. On the day everything was very cruisy, we went to do our hair then when the time rolled on off we strolled down the beach to get married. The day was gorgess and the staff were fantastic. We had nibbles and champane for everyone while we had photos taken and at about 6pm we went to have dinner which was a lovely Lovo meal on the beach. It was just perfect. The staff including Bill were just amazing and we would definately go back again.
