“Worth every cent. Paradise!”
Reviewed November 3, 2013 via mobile

Ignore the negative reviews.the negative reviewers are obviously too tight to pay for a five star resort so they come to a three star and pick the place to bits! It's worth every cent. Beautiful staff, clean resort, plenty of activities for kidlets and adults. The water is paradise and better swimming areas than the more expensive resorts on the island. Can't rate it high enough. Absolutely worth every cent to stay in this piece of paradise. The food was also great and plenty to suit all types of pallets. Go for it plantation island you rock and your staff are such lovely people who make the resort xxx :):):):):)

We stayed 5 nights at Plantation and this was our 5th time for Fiji. Rooms were a good size and as we expected, beaches were good, 3 pools which were good slide pool fun for the kids. Food was good and as expected, we'd recommend Black Coral Restaurant for meals as our preferred buffet was good for Mongolian BBQ. Also recommend coconut hut for slushies and morningcoffee.

Theonly real thing that let this place down was that there was not the normal friendly FIJI people. The kids were barely acknowledged when normally the Fijians are very attentive. Wouldnt saythey were rude but just not what you expect and the people are the reason we choose Fiji over other islands. Everyday we had to check our bill and ask for something to be removed, everything just felt hard.

Didnt let it ruin ourholiday we still had a nice time but Plantation wont be our island of choice again.

As the title says, we got back last night from having our 5th holiday at PI. Again we stayed in a poolside room, we love the location - 2 min walk to the beach and half way between PI's main restaurant and Anandas restaurant. Also very close to the local supermarket (fantastic cheese rolls -76cents and tuna & potato rotis - $2.50). We ate at PI's two restaurants, Anandas, and bought a meat/salad pack from Musket Cove & cooked our own dinner at their island bar bbqs. We were very happy with all our dinners. We self catered for breakfast & lunch (stock up at New World in Nadi before you head over to PI if you can).

We thought the watersports prices had gone up since two years ago. We paid $30 for a 10 min banana boat ride.

Last time we were there we went on a private snorkelling trip, hired a boat from the boat bure for $200 for approx. 3 hrs. This time it was going to cost us $235 per hour!!! We ended up going with a local (which PI don't recommend), had a great time, went to honeymoon island & castaway wall - $180 for approx. 3 hrs. Beats paying $705!

No one got sick while on holiday, a great time had by all.

Even though prices have gone up, I still think in general it is excellent value for money and I don't think you could do it cheaper at any other island. We will be back :)

Stayed for 7 nights in late Oct with our 3 young children (5, 2 & 4 months). We were really happy with our brand new 2 bedroom bure. It was tastefully decorated, very clean & close to the beach. The beach itself, snorkeling & hammocks lining the shore were all lovely. We found the buffet food to be pretty good, although you wouldn't want to eat from it 7 nights in a row. There are only so many buffets one can handle. Unfortunately that's where the good points end! Hard to know where to start...broken glass was littered around our bure. Obviously the area was used as a bit of a dumping ground before the new bures were built. No signage anywhere, how much does it cost to put up a few printed arrows pointing way to main pool etc..!? Lying in bed (on rock hard mattress with lumpy pillows) listening to music from bar area pumping out till 1am every night, hardly relaxing. Kids Club had no warmth or welcoming atmosphere. My very confident 5 year old had no desire to stay there and I hardly blame her. At the least a warm smile & welcome from one of the ladies there would have been nice. The meal system with the continuous queuing for everything incl room charge, table seating, bar area, then buffet was a joke! Felt exhausted & stressed out by the time we had all finally sat down with food & drinks in front of us. We ate dinner at Musket Cove 2 nights which was how Fiji should be..relaxing!! Great food & service there. Also had dinner at Lomani's which was absolutely lovely. To top it all off we all caught a rotten tummy bug (diarrhea & vomiting) at the end of the stay, not sure what from. We brushed our teeth with only bottled water and I was very vigilant with hand santiser with the kids. Not the way you want to finish off a holiday. My advice..don't go there! We are really well traveled and I can assure you there are plenty of better places around for the money.

Room Tip: New bures on Lomani side are lovely and its also where the best part of the beach/snorkelling is.

Bula Lisa,

We are sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with us. The bure that you stayed in was built very recently, so we appreciate the feedback about the beds and pillows. The glass that was around your bure was cleared (we read about this in the comment sheet that you left behind, so thank you for reporting it). We are still working on signage in the area where you stayed. We do have large scale maps around the resort to orientate guests, and we are about to print resort maps for guests. We will also look into our general signage around the resort.

We are glad that you enjoyed the buffet food at the resort. We agree that 7 days of buffet only would be boring for guests which is why we have an additional 4 restaurants, snack bar, cafe and 2 mini supermarkets at the property for our guests' enjoyment. Guests on meal plan have credit at these other restaurants that is equivalent to the price of the buffet. The only restriction is that only guests aged 16 years and over can dine in Lomani, and the "kids eat free" is only available at the main buffet restaurant (however you don't have to dine with the kids if you are on a meal plan). Musket Cove is also located nearby which has a terrific restaurant, cafe and mini-market as well.

It's disappointing that your 5 year old didn't enjoy kids club. We pride ourselves on the variety of kids activities that the Coconut Kids Club offers run by our team of dedicated minders. We try and offer activities that will suit all ages, and the kids especially love the fish feeding, t-shirt paining and outdoor beach games. This is often the way kids make life long friends on the island, and most of the time it is hard to get the kids to come home from kids club! Anyway, we will pass on your feedback to the kids club team so that we can improve the atmosphere and experience for our young guests.

We are sorry that your family became ill during your stay. There were a few cases of "winter stomach flu" that afflicted some guests in October. Although we have new procedures to try and contain the spread of illnesses, guests can pick up viruses from other travellers from time to time. We do have a medical centre on the island that is staffed by 3 certified nurses, who are able to provide assistance should guests become ill.

We are glad that you enjoyed the beach, snorkelling, hammocks and newly constructed two bedroom bures.

On the night of 23rd October, we suffered from a major food poisoning eating from their lunch and dinner buffet. We suffered from severe diarrhea and vomiting, nausea, 2 people at the same time which clearly indicates very poor hygiene in preparing food.

Management is covering it up claiming that this is not coming from their food, and that no other people suffered from these at the same time with us. The lame PR guy called Ravin and the manager himself were incredibly rude to us, Ravin laughing to our faces saying that he needs to TEST us to see if indeed we are ill! How dares he.

They then offered us to move to sister hotels, every hour their story would change... The medical nurse does admit that almost every day they are having people feel sick with diarrhea and vomiting. This cannot be right, hygiene and food handling at this resort is not proper.

On top of this, they were threatening to charge us money for the rest of our stay, as we wanted to leave the place, since we could not trust the food, and the options on this small island are limited.

In the end we left and moved to the Sheraton on Denarau island, to be on the safe side. Worst experience with a hotel ever, in our 7 month round the world trip!!

If you do not want to ruin your holidays, do not go there, that's my common sense recommendation.

Bula Travelling_is_great11,

We are sorry that you became ill while staying at Plantation and that this affected your experience at the resort. We reviewed your case with the resort nurse and she confirmed that the cause of illness was not food poisoning. The majority of our guests dined at the same buffet restaurant that evening and none of them became ill.

Unfortunately travellers can become ill from time to time with viruses such as noro-virus or the "winter stomach flu" that can be picked up from fellow travellers. We have implemented new procedures to limit the spread of these annoying viruses, including providing alcohol based hand gel in the buffet area for our guests' protection. It is very unfortunate that on this occasion both you and your partner became ill from what we suspect was one of these viruses. We do have testing kits that could have proved definitively the cause of your illness, however this was declined.

After you expressed a desire to leave the resort, we arranged for you to be moved to our sister property, Lomani. There is a price difference between the two properties, and although we arranged a discounted accommodation rate, you indicated that you were unwilling to pay the price difference to upgrade to the other resort. We also arranged a special discounted rate for a 4 star property nearby that was only FJD10 more per night than the rate you were paying to stay with us, however you indicated that Plantation should pay the full amount for the remaining 9 nights accommodation to stay at this other property.

Unfortunately as you were unsatisfied with the alternative arrangements suggested, we offered to waiver our early departure fees so that you could make your own arrangements for accommodation without financial penalty. We are glad that you were able to find a hotel that was more to your liking.

I read so many negative reports about bad food, service, staff etc... dont listen to them!! The resort is huge and the rooms are spacious and clean (we stayed in a studio garden bure #315) which was about 70m to the beach. A little to close to the bar and the loud music at night for my husbands liking but my son and I didnt hear a thing, after snorkling and activities all day we crashed! The beds are comfy, there is plenty of room for a family of 4. There are fans and air-con, and the housekeepers do a great job. There is a fridge in the room, so stock up on mixers, fruit, bread, snacks, cereal, milk etc at Anandas Supermarket. It has everything you need and a great bakery. A good money saving tip is to take some plastic bowls and cups from home to have cereal and/or lunch and make your own duty free cocktails.
The activities for all ages are fantastic - plenty of water and beach activities to keep you busy all day. 3 pools and beautiful soft white sand & clear water at the beach, as well as good snorkling straight off the beach, what more could you want?
The kids pool has a water slide that is fast and fun which our 'almost 8' yr old loved. We would venture there at the end of each day for a Fiji Bitter ($3.50AUD) and watch him and the other kids have a ball on the slide. There is an adults pool for those wanting a quiet swim and another huge pool for the kids with an island in the middle. It was full house when we were there but it never felt like it. We got deck chairs and hammocks whenever we wanted and had the beach to ourselves most times.
The food at the buffet was fair/good but we only ate there twice, prefering to order 'a la carte' at the other restaurants. There are no set rules however and as a family of 3 (2A + 1C) we were able to sit together wherever we wanted and our son had the choice of the kids or adults buffet to eat from. We loved Black Coral Restaurant and Anandas Restaurant was good too. For lunch they do an all-you-can eat BBQ for ($18/$9 AUD) adults/kids. We also loved Dicks Restaurant at Musket Cove. The food was fanastic and resonably priced, the decor lovely and the best service on the Island. Meals there range from $15 to $25 AUD with a good kids menu.
The staff are very friendly, relaxed and helpful and anything you need is too easy.
We room charged everything. I asked for a printout every couple of days to check where we were up to. You can also load cash or CC onto a 'cash card' at reception and use that instead of room charge.
We did 4 boat trips to different snorkling spots which are cheap and fun. We also did the Island Hop which takes you to Honeymoon Is (snorkling only) Mana & Castaway Islands were you can use their facilities, have lunch and a cocktail or two as well as excellent snorkling (off Mana) This was the highlight of our trip!
If you want luxury, maybe Plantation isnt for you, spend more and go elsewhere but if you want fun and value for money I defintely recommend Plantation Island Resort.

Room Tip: Rooms on the Lomani side (200's) are newer and have snorkling straight out the front but the roo...

Seriously?! Beach bure right on the beach, snorkelling on low tide right on my door step, hammocks and day beds just meters away, getting around all day in swimsuit, no shoes and no worries. Now this is what Fiji is all about!
Since everything is so easy the only thing to think about is food... Here are some tips.
Children 10-12 may not love what is on offer in the children's buffet, it is limited. It's usually ok but be prepared for some complaints. The family we went with occasionally upgraded their children's meals to adults so they'd get a decent meal. Definitely no complaints about dessert however!
If you have younger children feed them EARLY, they'll need it after their long days. They have a section of the restaurant for this... Mum & Dad can enjoy a cocktail at this time... If you time happy hour, even better!
With the kids feed and happy, time for the older bunch to be seated and the younger ones whipped off to kids club. Easy peasy.
We didn't get the lunch package as we found, last time, we didn't need it. There are cafés around so if you want a decent coffee it's there, iced slushies, milkshakes, chilled coconuts... You got it. Chips, wedges, burgers, toasted sandwiches, fruit salad... If you choose, BUT the best lunch option, by far, is to send someone you know on a fishing trip and when they get back at lunch time with a fish (of course!) get the kitchen to cook it up with some salad and sauces... Whoola!! The best lunch of your holiday! We did this twice.
There is a dirt track for runners too about 7km there and back.
This was our second visit and it won't be our last. We went this time with another family which we would do again. It's just the easiest holiday ever, not 5 star and not pretending to be but every bit of awesome family holiday.
