Plantation Island Resort
Reviewed February 4, 2013

We ended up at Plantation Island after Cyclone Evan had damaged our first choice being Malolo Island Resort. We stayed in a beachfront bure, which we found to be very spacious and comfortable. There was plenty of room for the 4 of us (my wife and our 2 children 15 and 11). The resort is 3 star and our room is a bit on the old side but everything was functional and the maids keep the room very clean and tidy not an easy task with my kids. The beachfront bures are at the best end of the resort and you could swim out and snorkel from here and see all the different colourful fish. Here is a tip, take some bread from breakfast and take it out with you when you snorkel this will attract all the fish, just amazing. The best place to snorkel is just before the pontoon that you will see from the beach.

We were on the meal plan (breakfast and dinner) and although you have to have breakfast in the main area, you do have the choice of where you have dinner and can use your credit there (being F$40 per adult and F$20 per child). I would recommend the Black Coral restaurant, waiter service and a lot more civilized. We rarely went over the credit.

We did a few trips, hand line fishing, snorkeling, and dolphin safari which were all good value. My son and I also played golf on the 9 hole course. The course is OK for a hit and giggle but don’t expect too much. There are 3 swimming pools, tennis, and mini golf and so there is a lot to keep you occupied. My wife also enjoyed a couple of massages at the salon.

I would mention that it is hard to get a drink at the bar especially during happy hour you have to order from one of the staff with an order book and then wait. This can take some time and was fairly chaotic. There must be a better way to handle this.

There is also a coffee bar that does good coffee, milkshakes and smoothies etc.

We had a good holiday but next time we will head back to our favourite resort being Malolo Island Resort.

Room Tip: You need a room in the 200's. A beachfront bure would be perfect

My partner and I stayed here for six days. We had a really relaxing holiday here, the beach was amazing. The staff are friendly and helpful although the service wasn't up to scratch. The food was alright but the location made up for it. Snorkelling was out of this world! The room we stayed in was very dated - the pillows smelt horrible (I think they must have been there since the 80s and never been replaced). This is a really good place to go for families or couples. The rooms just need a refurb - then I would come back in a flash!

Would recommend the Garden Bure's for family, spacious & clean! Staff are fantastic and very happy to please. Kids club was also great, although with aspergers child had to re-iterate to keep closer eye on my child wandering around or out of club. Babysitter's, Evie & Melasi are beautiful girls. Thomas (waiter) is a treasure to be served by. Niven (Manager) absolute gem & takes care of all your needs or concerns professionally and with smile, fun guy!! My tip would be also if you like to drink, get some from the mainland & take with you to the island, although drinks not over expensive anyway. They do have a small mini mart shop on island you can purchase alcohol, drinks, snacks etc If you want to do activities or massage etc book early when you get there as at times they are booked out early for day! You can take a walk around to the marina (smugglers cove) in 25mins and they also have bigger mini mart, souvenir shop on way, bar outdoors you can sit n relax with ice cold drink before walking back along the tropical pathways. Hubby the "pro" fisherman also recommends taking your own gear to experience the abundance of easy catches both mainland & out in the reefs etc!! A walk through the back of the island leads you to Lomani (adults) resort which is lovely, drinks little more expensive but quiet & lovely deck out to watch the water & enjoy nice cocktail. Keep some bread/toast wrapped in napkin to feed fish & watch your kids amazed at how many baby fish will surround the food or jump out of water in front of their eyes!! Recommend the shell island tour but most sellers have the same things so walk around before you buy (unlike me!) Avoid the cyclonic season for unexpected evacuations. They will ensure your safety at all times!! Enjoy your stay :)))

Room Tip: Garden Bures a spacious & quiet!

We originally were to stay at a different resort but because of cyclone damage ended up here at Plantation Island and I'm glad we did. We were in a beach front bure which was good for the money. The bathrooms were very dated but usable, because of the slatted shutters on the windows the air conditioning really wasn't much use but there were roof fans as well. There was a bar fridge and tea and coffee making facilities. The rooms were cleaned each day however the cups etc were cleaned in the bathroom sink. A big tip would be if your staying here to bring a knife and plate because you can purchase bread butter etc from the mini mart to make sandwiches for lunch, which brings me to the food. It's edible but only just. Mostly it's cold. The porters and staff are all very friendly and seem to be happy to help when asked. The best part was the price of goods in the resort and mini mart, though dearer than the mainland they were not too over priced. The island itself is perfectly positioned and the waters are beautiful. One complaint would be that due to the dredging and moving of sand for a new area of the resort, the sand in front of the Bures in the 200 end is dissapperaring and this is causing the beach down that end to become very rocky.

service was unfriendly, slow and perhaps resentful. If I was paranoid I would think some 'mishaps' and the fact that our phone rang in the small hours of every morning was down to snarly staff (we kept taking it off the hook and the cleaners kept replacing it). Our garden bure was lovely, large and reasonably clean - we did however have to reposition the bed as there was a definate sloping to the room! The food is so so so bad (breakfast was the only meal worth having) staff did not like it when I insisted on fresh salad for my kids meals every night. The kids hated the kids club and I was concerned for their safety due to the lack of supervision, but they didnt mind the evening movie. Kids liked the waterslide and the beach was lovely - I think the beach really made the trip for us. So a great setting, good room, ordinary service and poor food.

Room Tip: garden bure, good size, close to beach and cheaper than water front

Loved the location on a gorgeous beach although tidal one side of the island is great. Food was average but acceptable for the pricing, Rooms were nice best are probably beachfront but garden were fine. Kids club was so good. Kids loved it and we had a nice time doing our own thing and sometimes family things. only disappoinjtment for us was the rude lady at the snorkel trip booking place. The lovely Fijian lady booked us for snorkelling on teh shallow water snorkel for the kids. it was hopeless as the tide was to low and we couldn't do much snorkelling. Next morning we returned to enquire about better snorkelling and the european lady there was so rude about our suggestion the water was to shallow. We didn't ask for our money backor anything like that. She suggested we did the Island hopper as the snorkelling was supposed to be good. It was hopeless and itwas to long a day for our youngest 5yr old. Luckily our neighbours told us about the great snorkelling off the beach from teh swimm platform. This wasbetter than any thinh we saw on our 6 paid snorkels. My husband and Iwent on teh dolphin trip tosnorkel the Barrier reef which is what the sign said they went to but they went back to the sand place we had been to before. Glad we didn't take the children trip on the boat was to long sitting down. Diving, fishing and parasailing were all excellent with extremely polite and informed staff. We enjoyed our stay and will return.

Room Tip: Beachfront look amazing

PIR-management, Director of Sales at Plantation Island Resort, responded to this reviewResponded April 15, 2013

Dear TripAdvisor readers: Please read reviews posted on here regarding watersports activities with a big grain of salt!!

Plantation has two external companies that operate our watersports activities. There have been a number of fake TripAdvisor reviews posted recently that criticise the activities provided by one of the companies, and in this instance, also praise the activities offered by the other company. The purpose of this would appear to be to gain competitive advantage.

We believe this review to be fraudulent for the following reasons: It is simply not true that the snorkelling offshore from the island is better than the outer reef trips. I also find it difficult to believe that a guest who were unhappy with their first snorkelling trip would go back and book another five snorkelling trips with the same provider before "discovering" the snorkelling directly in front of the resort. Most guests actually practice snorkelling in the foreshore before venturing out to the outer reef. It could be coincidental, but the spelling mistakes in this review are the same as other previously posted suspected fraudulent reviews.

My partner and I stayed here for 5 days. It takes about 50 mins to get here by the ferry. They do not let you take alcohol over to the island. But if you want just put it in your suitcase they do not check. When we arrived they have all the singers waiting for you on the jetty and they give you a shell necklace as you walk off the boat! Great experience! You go through a quick orientation and then your off to your rooms. Unfortunately our room that we were provided was flooded because the air on was leaking on both sides of the room. After paying $800 for the nights we were quick to call up and explain the situation. They found us a new room right on the beach front with everything working. We did not need to carry our suitcases anywhere because they brought them all to us. Great service. They have a kids club, which was not any use to us but for those who have kids it will be. Every night they have a different buffet theme for less then 50FJ$ and it is delicious! You can order off the menu if you do not like the buffet. You get a personal servant that will serve you when ever he is working. Do not ever be rude to these people because they are lovely, extraordinary and work their butts off! Get to know them because they can play a big part in your memories! They did for us! The reef that you can go snorkeling is beautiful! There are many activities that can be booked like fishing, para sailing, and banana rides. Just to name a few. Don't forget happy hour!! Payment you can get a cash card or you can charge to your room. Make sure you keep a tab on what you are spending so you don't get a shock at the end. Hope this helps. Happy travelling!
