“Great people and amazing water!”
Reviewed November 12, 2012

After one week at Plantation Island resort we returned home feeling happy. The island itself is beautiful and the people are amazing. We spent most of our time on the beach and snorkelling, unfortunately the coral isn't so good and they did say that they are trying to regrow in areas, but we did see a few colourful fish. The water was breathtaking and clear with many fish close to shore as you paddle. Our 2 bedroomed garden bure was spacey and cleaned every day, it was literally a 10 second walk down to the beach. Lots of coconuts around which my son loved trying to open to no success lol, but funny to watch. Lots of crabs around and also lizards on your ceiling, so if you have a fear be warned. I find them cute and cool to watch, but didn't realise they woud be inside our bure. The food was the down side and we did have to complain at one point about the buffet, but we where refunded for that evening in particular so that was good. I do think they need to look at upgrading the buffet as we noticed a few people not happy with it. We ended up eating at the Al La Carte most evenings which was ok. Overall we enjoyed our stay there and we did do the island hop which was very cool, but would stay clear of the glass bottom boat as it wasn't very good and not worth the cash. The kayaks where always available and that was fun, and the 24 hour reception was always very helpful and always there when needed. The staff are wonderful and loved my little boy, we had a few good chats and where sorry to say goodbye. They made sure we where looked after by the bar area and wouldn't let us carry our own drinks, each time my husband got up to help he was told to sit down lol. I think I'm quite a fussy person and think the rating for this place is about right, there's no frills and it is very basic, but clean and comfortable. We did find it very expensive and paying at the end of the stay can throw a big surprise if you don't keep checking your bill along the way. We paid midweek to keep track of what we where spending. This is our first visit to a Fiji island and would probably go back to Plantation again at some stage, but for now we want to see what other islands have to offer. On the island hop Castaway was great and looked slightly better in the food area, we had pizza and it was lovely. We also checked out their menu while there and it did look more appealing. Beach at Castaway was just as nice as Plantation. We also had a few nice walks along the beach to Musket Cove, which was nice and a few more bars there. Lomani resort is right next door and an adults only resort, so it's nice to go for a romantic evening if you want to leave the kids with a sitter or in the kids club. The staff at Lomani are very attentive and you'll love it there if you fancy that little break from the kids.

I'm missing Fiji so much, so I think that says a lot about our stay!

We went to Plantation to celebrate my in-laws 50th wedding anniversary July 2012. 6 adults 5 children, ages 9 - 15. Our room was lovely it was situated furthermost from dinning area, but it suited our group. After reading other reviews really didn't expect room to be so nice.
We did need to have some of the kids over early to have their meals on the prepaid deal, which was a little bit of a hassle and probably meant that we spent more time at the cocktail bar than we should have! The buffet style meals really suited the teenagers, but some of us tended to get a bit over buffets 3 times a day and the ticket system was clunky. Staff were fantastic at organising a cake for the anniversary, and serenaded the couple!!!
Snorkling trip was fantastic, many of our group were very experienced and they really just let us go. We took our own masks and rented the flippers, but the ones to rent did look fine.
We left it too late to try any of the day spa options, everything booked out.
Many organised activities, but because we had a group of kids they didn't join in. Many activities for younger kids.
I would certainly recommend it for an easy family holiday, no cooking and cleaning!

We stepped off the late water taxi and were greeted as if we were old freinds by the resort staff.
All the wonderfull stuff we remember about Plantation island is still there but boy ohh boy have tghings had a facelift.Gone is the tired looking building as you step off the boat. Replaced by stunning new water activity sheds. Our Bure 225 on our last visit was getting a bit old inside.Again this has had a huge refurbishment and is fantastic.
The burger bar has gone for now (soon to be rebuilt) but instead theres a new eaterie serving yummy lunch time food.
We had a fantastic time and yep --we will be back.

We returned to Plantation Island in Sept 2011 after 18 years but this time with the kids! It was just as magical as we remember it. Wonderful friendly people, beautiful beaches and the relaxed feeling with being on a beautiful island. We had a renovated 2 brm bure - great space for us all. Loved the fact the kids could play outside on the large lawn area in front, cracking open coconuts and playing with the neighbouring kids. Kids loved the pools and kids club. The beaches are stunning and we spent many hours snorkelling right off the beach. Great to have a choice of places to eat with Lomani's being a real treat and a special night for the 2 of us. Sure this place isn't 5 star but then we weren't expecting that (and thankfully isn't priced 5 star!) so if you are wanting a great place to take the family for a fantastic holiday and a chance to experience the 'real Fiji' then this is an awesome place to go. We will be back!! :) Vinaka to all the wonderful staff.

Made our 6 th trip to plantation this year after a bit of a break . As always we had a fantastic time and as always it was super affordable.
Things to remember about plantation
Don't pre buy the meal plans you can purchase them for exactly the same price when you are there.
You can make great savings by purchasing bread cheese etc from the supermarket at Amanda's or down at musket

Chuck a toasted sandwich maker into your luggage and a few light weight picnic sets for plates and cutlery.then you have the options of fruit and cereal as well

The kids club is great fun for older more independent children but it is not like a western daycare if your kids are under Five hire a nanny for them they are cheap as chips and will save any concerns about wandering off.

Don't expect that because you are on the island to have fun that tired whining children will suddenly morph into super beings that don't need sleep that should be up in the bar area until all hours. For everyone's sake put them to bed and hire a nanny

You have a 23 kg luggage allowance so use it. As a family we always have a case with everyone's clothes in it and a case for snorkels flippers and towels. (circumvents people's moans about hire age etc)Could even chuck in a couple of cushions if you wanted.
Walk between plantation and musket. Visit all the restaurants.interact with all the staff be friendly and before you know it you will be having fun.

Of note also we have always bought bottled water on the island it is not particularly expensive use it for brushing teeth as well and alcohol hand wash for hands. Have never had problems with upset tummies

Just arrived back after 7 wonderful nights on Plantation Island. After reading some reviews, I wondered if we had done the right thing, but now feel that some of them where either just bad luck or really unfair on this 3 star resort. We stayed in a hotel room and I was wondering if it would fit the 5 of us in comfortably. It was perfect. As soon as you walked in the door you were in a tiled area and to the left straight into the bathroom which seemed a bit strange but after seeing how sandy and messy the kids were after a day at the beach it was great to go straight into the showers. The main room was big and had a double bed, then there was a partition with a door and there were three single beds in this room and a table and chairs and a desk. It was perfect for us, the only thing I would suggest would be next time I would try and book a downstairs hotel room as we had nowhere to sit outside when we had some quiet times in the afternoon, as the upstairs rooms had no balcony, but that is just a small thing. In saying that it was great to not have any one above us moving around, so depends on what your preference is. The room was always clean and tidy when we came back in the afternoon and I didn't notice any strange smells. The fan and A/C was loud but i would rather the noise than being boiling hot and you didn't notice it after a while.
The buffet meals were ok, the breakfast was fine and the kids loved the pancakes, but I would always check what was on offer for lunch and dinner and most times we skipped lunch and for dinner we did try the buffet twice and it was fine, but we had wonderful dinners at the Black Coral and also down at Anandas Restaurant. I just found that sometimes it was just too hot and the meals were quite heavy, but there was always somewhere else to try.
One comment I would make is that the kids activites were fantastic especially after dinner and our kids loved the dancing and movie times. We found that most of the time though they just wanted to go to the activity and then come straight out which was fine, as it was just too hot, but they painted there own tshirts and went crab hunting, played beach games it was great. If your kids are young, around 3-4 or even younger then the nannies are fantastic. We had Kara for two nights while we went to dinner and she was wonderful and the kids loved her, they even asked if they could have her the second night, so who are we to complain about that! At $4 a child per hour, she was worth every penny and we made sure we gave her a bit more.
We had a fantastic trip and we will be saving up for our next wonderful family holiday on Plantation.

Room Tip: Upstairs hotel rooms have no patio or balcony, lower hotel rooms do and so did the beachfront hotel...
