“A piece of paradise”

We stayed at Tropica Island resort for 7 days over the Christmas period and it was fantastic. The resort is in a beautiful setting with an excellent view of the beach and sunset. Our beachfront bure was lovely and very clean. The staff were friendly and professional and did their utmost to ensure that our Christmas was thoroughly enjoyable, they even went to the effort of decorating a boat as Santa's sleigh and have Santa arrive and greet us by the pool! The daily activities such as hat weaving, basket weaving and crab races were good fun and also an opportune time to talk to the staff about Fiji life. We had a wonderful and relaxing stay. Many thanks to Tropica Island Resort for being such great hosts, especially Sam, Isoa, Cathy and Kara.

We were lucky enough to spend a week at Tropica Island resort in November 2013, the staff were absolutely amazing! They could not do enough for us, anything we wanted they were happy to do. We stayed in a beachfront Bure and it was just gorgeous, we could hear the ocean lapping on the shore every night, there was an outdoor shower, front porch with swing and hammock in the front of our Bure, as it is an 18+ resort it was so peaceful. The infinity edge pool is gorgeous, very clean. No restrictions on drinks or opening hours of the pool either which was fantastic for late night dips. We purchased a meal plan and were very happy with the food, menu changed daily, breakfast was great. This place truly felt like home and we were so sad to leave. I feel we made some real friends too while there, with other guests and staff. Daily Massages by Liti at the spa put my husband to sleep every day, the singing waiters Sam, Ili, Naomi were just gorgeous, the entertainment staff Ice, Sunny and Mak made every night great fun with their crazy games and during the day they climbed trees and got us coconuts and took us out snorkeling it was just fantastic! The ladies at reception, Kara, Cathy were like mother hens, one of them even held the ferry back to the island for us when we were late returning back from a mainland tour. I cannot thank the amazing staff enough for the memories and experiences we had at this beautiful place.

Tropica was our final stop on our first trip to Fiji and we really wish we'd stayed longer. The staff, especially Lli and Rio, made our stay enjoyable with their constant enthusiasm and larger than life personalities.

The food was very good but definitely overpriced and I especially like that there wasn't a lot of choice on the menu, I much prefer a small menu done really well rather than too much choice.

The beachfront bure that we stayed in was absolutely immaculate and a pleasure to stay in.

Our trip did end on a bit of a sour note which was a shame, we decided to participate in the snorkelling trip as it seemed to good to pass up. When we enquired about the trip no mention was made of the trip being chargeable and there was no price on the board. No mention was made either during or directly after. There was another smaller board with a separate trip with prices on so we fairly assumed that the trip on the main activities board was complimentary for guests.

As we prepared to board our boat out to the ferry to leave, one of the crew from the previous day requested that we pay for the trip. We were a little shocked to be asked to pay two minutes before leaving and felt it was a little unfair. We felt bad as we're not the type of people who would try to get something for free or refuse to pay but we'd handed over pretty much all our cash, bar some lunch money for the trip to the airport, to pay our bill. However upon discussion we also felt within our rights not to pay as we were neither told we would have to pay nor was the trip advertised as a cost to guests.

It was a shame that the trip ended this way but it in no way detracted from the enjoyment we got out of the stay there. The ongoing building work didn't spoil our stay at all.

Having backpacked around much of Asia and India in the past few years maybe my expectations are slightly lower than others but I would certainly recommend Tropica and would definitely return.

We stayed for 4 nights at Tropica Island, in a beachfront bure. Staying in this resort gave us a local view of Fiji and the feeling to be on a desert island.
The resort looks homemade and respects the nature. The small number of guests is very relaxing (as well as the absence of children). The bure is nice (but not luxury), the bed is comfortable. The outside shower is nice but not glamorous. There is a fridge if you want to but drinks at the bar and take them at night. There is no safe. The chair in front of the bure is also home made and ours was not very comfortable, unfortunately. The swimming pool is beautiful.

The spa is tiny and very simple. We tried a 15-minutes foot massage which did not give us the envy to book another treatment.

People and staff and extremely friendly and the atmosphere look very personalised; you could feel at home. The staff looks after you, knows your name and will be super helpful if you need anything. The food has nothing special but is ok and it is quiet pricy – I was expecting something much better as per the previous reviews on tripadvisor. The breakfast needs definitively to change and was extremely disappointing: there is a little buffet with cereals, milk, yogurts, fruits and you have to order a-la-carte any eggs, French toast, toasts and bread, pancakes. The service is way too long, not professional and at the end makes you unhappy, even if you take into account that it is “Fiji time” and that you are on holidays. More than once, they mixed the order and we ended up eating something different than what we ordered (both at breakfast and at dinner time), but we can cope with that. What we did not like is that you have to order your eggs at least 30 minutes before receiving them. There is no bread available on the buffet for breakfast – so you need to wait for 30 min to eat your first toast in the morning. Also aunts in the sugar (and therefore on the table) could be avoided.

They try to organise activities but it is limited: volley, opening of a coconut, creation of a palm hat, crab race, cava ceremony, etc. You can do canoe and catamaran boat for free which is nice.
Watersports like jet ski can be done via booking in another resort – you have to go by canoe which is nice and funny but tiring. We would definitively recommend a 3-hour jet-ski trip – marvellous !
Also the transfer to the airport by seaplane is a must do. We wanted to go to the market but it was cancelled at the last minute and to do fishing but it was too expensive.

We appreciated the free wifi around the pool area.
The beach is nice but there is not mattress on beach sun chairs (also they are in white plastic), disappointing.

Regarding the work in progress, we were not disturbed by anything but stayed in the beach and around the pool. Gardens are not spectacular bur are maintained. From time to time, it is a bit bizarre to see big trucks coming on the beach to take the trash or big boats delivering gasoil – but I guess it is part of Fiji life and of our impact on Fiji as a tourist. It ruins a little bit the post card but remains rare.

We booked this hotel because of the reviews on TripAdvisor – 4+ round at the time I write. I would recommend the place for a short stay (3 nights) if you are searching for total relaxation and a little taste of real Fiji, but not for luxury. It is a beautiful unspoiled place but the cost of everything is too high (accommodation, drinks, food, activities) for what it is. The service at the restaurant needs to improve and decreased my overall satisfaction of this trip.
I would put 3.5 “stars” but I can’t, so I will put 3 because the global experience was good; but closer to “average” than to “very” good.

Tropica Island Resort is beautifully located, the staff are welcoming and professional. The snorkeling in the bay is fabulous, the pool is stunningly presented overlooking the bay. The cocktails are wonderful. The food is lovely.

My husband and I missed our flight and first nights booking due to an emergency and the staff helped in re-organising our transfers for the following day. A costly exercise, firstly because we were told our first nights accommodation was non refundable (no compassionate gesture of any kind was offered). And secondly because we had to pay for an expensive speedboat in order not to lose the second nights accommodation.

Initially, we chose this resort based on: good reviews on trip advisor; the website; and comments made by the owner. Admitedly, we were hesitant at first due to some older reviews mentioning that the gardens were still being worked on but the owner had made comments stating that the work had been finalised.

Here are a few comments left by the owner on tripadvisor (below):

“All works in and around the resort are now complete and we are in the process of further enhancing the beauty of the resort through landscaping. This is not causing any disruption to guests.”

And another comment made around 12th August stating: “With regard to the work being carried out at the resort we are just finalizing the last of the landscaping in and around our Resort Rooms which will be finalized within the next 2 weeks.”

And another comment: “Our rooms have not been equipped with TV’s as we aim to enhance the ultimate island experience for our guests without the noise and distraction of televisions.”

So we went ahead and booked a Resort Room trusting that the landscaping work was complete and there would be no noise or distractions by the time we arrived in mid November.

We were assigned room #101 which was beautifully presented, clean and modern but overpriced.

We felt so deflated when we discovered that the room was NOT “set amongst lush tropical gardens” (as promoted on the website) and landscape work is still continuing. In fact, Resort Rooms are set alongside a dirt road and behind the main building (which includes the kitchen). There was constant loud noise of staff and workmen as well as what sounded like a dishwasher and/or washing machine that didn’t stop until just before midnight – then started up again at about 6am. I would not recommend the Resort Room to light sleepers or people looking for tranquility.

We asked to change rooms and were moved from room #101 to room #105 – unfortunately, it wasn’t much better. We were disrupted with drilling, continuous noise and workmen. It was difficult for us to relax or have a good nights sleep in either room.

I can see the vision the owners have for the resort however, we did feel somewhat disheartened and mislead. Tropica Island Resort should not advertise “lush tropical gardens, total relaxation and rejuvenation” if that’s not what is being entirely offered. We kept up our end of the deal by booking and making prompt payment — and sadly we feel Tropica didn’t keep up their end of the deal.

We’re sure if we’d booked a Beachfront Bure it would have been a totally different experience.

Room Tip: Do not book a Resort Room if you're looking for peace and tranquility.

We had a wonderful time at Tropica Island Resort! The accommodations are brand new and very clean. The bures have great views and the outdoor shower is great. The staff was very friendly and the resort was quiet and clean.
The pool was clean and looks just like in the pictures. It's a saltwater pool, so you don't get any of that nasty chlorine feeling after swimming in it. There was plenty of snorkeling right off the beach, and there were kayaks and a Hobie Cat to get around the bay in.
We loved the food and we were impressed with all of the meals we had. We've eaten at Michelin starred restaurants, and while Tropica isn't in that class, their food was still excellent. We would definitely go back to Tropica!

My husband and I were looking for that place where we could relax and have that getaway that we had always dreamed of having.
From the moment we drew near to the jetty and heard the beautiful serenading wafting out across the water we were filled with high expectations.
The staff from the moment we set foot on Tropica Island Resort were truly unbelievable. What a beautiful group of people. With their early morning greeting of "Bulla" to us, to their beautiful smiles, to their contagious laughter, we could not but feel part of their family.
We were absolutely thrilled with our "Beachfront Bure", its spaciousness, the hand made furniture from Fijian hardwood to the outside river- rock shower, the swing on the verandah to relax in and to read those books we had been trying to get round to for so long. The sound of the gentle waves breaking on the sand at full tide, the beautiful glass like sea to overlook in the mornings and the magnificent sunsets at night. Simply breathtaking.
There were many activities to partake in if one wished to or if your preference was for lying by the pool and indulging in cocktails and nibbles that too could be arranged.
The menu had an excellent variety of food which was beautifully presented with warm smiles and a never ending concern for your welfare and that all the meals were to your liking. The evenings were delightful with the Fijian's again providing some beautiful background singing and a dance floor for those who liked to get up and join in the fun. What a hoot that often turned out to be.
We personally were very sad to leave after 8 nights. Not only the resort but our new found friends. We only hope that one day we can return and we definitely highly recommend to all of you who are looking for that truly relaxing holiday. To Sue and Rob, good on you for having a dream and congratulations on making your dream come true.
