“Enjoyable experience”
Reviewed June 28, 2012

My husband and I stayed at FF for 4 nights before heading over to Plantation. We were picked up in a long boat from the Malolo Cat after dark and once beached, I was offed to be carried ashore.

At one stage we were the only people staying there which was lovely. There was no possible way we could fault any of the staff, they were all just gorgeous, especially Abbo with his beautiful smile, Salatay with her magical hands, kind nature and wonderful tales, cheeky Mali, Rajaeli, the new manager and Anaseca who makes great margaritas.

We hadn't bought meal tickets as we wanted the option to eat wherever but once there realised there was nowhere else. There were no options as to what you wanted to eat and the evening meals were enormous and really not that palatable, but then we found the same thing at Plantation, so...

Lunches were also huge but quite nice. Breakfasts consisted of bacon and pancakes (huge pile of!) or eggs and toast, not both on offer at the same time however and bacon never came with the eggs but we found this kind of cute. I'm sure however, if we had asked to have both, they would have accommodated us as nothing was too much bother for them.

We stayed in a 1 room bure which was very basic but clean and comfortable and the outside shower was lovely. We were somewhat surprised there was no bar fridge but they were happy to provide ice and ice bucket. The pool & deck area is nice with a great outlook and the beach although small and sans silken white sand, was lovely, the water was as warm as a bath and was teeming with fish.

We had a great kava night with the boys and got to enjoy their wonderful singing.

The day we left Salatay made us gorgeous leis from the fauna and 6 of the staff walked us to the long boat and sung us a farewell which was very touching.

It certainly wouldn't be for everyone but it was an experience we will never regret having had.

Vinaka FF and sega na lega.

What a great place to stay! The accomodation was great and I have to agree with you Elley C, the staff were amazing! We met heaps of cool of people and have some wonderful memories. The food was generous and delicious and the staff always remembered our names. I would recommend it to anyone who is adventurous and loves surf and adventure. The surf trips were fun and their were lots of options to surf different breaks.

We stayed at Funky because it was close to the surf breaks. I was struck by how friendly the staff were. We stayed in a small room, which was right on the beach. So beautiful. The out-door shower was a nice change. We were picked up from beachcomber by Rush and Marlay in a long boat, the trip over was fun, but make sure you take a water-proof cover for your bag because if its raining it will get wet. The food was great, thanks bloss. I am a camper, and am comfortable to follow my surfing husband just about anywhere, so if you are looking for a full-on resort, Funky is probably not for you, but if you want good surf, good food, and to meet some really lovely people, and if you are willing to rough it (just a little) I would very much recommend Funky Fish.

We stayed thinking we were getting a nights reprieve from Beachcomber but were disapointed when we pulled back the sheets to find 2 large blood stains on them., the long boat that took us to the port was a slow trip and i got soaking wet as did our luggage.
The staff seemed nice enough however they didnt seem to do alot to rectify a problem we had with our transfers to the port.
i wouldnt recommend this place to anyone looking for a resort style stay.

I don't recommend this place. Too expensive for what they offer: a noisy generator in the middle of the island that ruins the peacefulness and nature on the island. Non-tasty and very unhealthy food. The long boat that takes you surf takes a long time to start and once it didn't even started. Includes wine and bear but no water. Rooms dark, no place to put luggage and full of bugs. The only positive thing is that the staff is really nice, but the owner is clearly not being fare for the price he asks and what he offers. Very dissapointing!

Although the weather wasn't on our side for the 5 nights that we stayed the staff and their hospitality completely made up for rain. The island itself was still beautiful despite what it had been through and with free kayak and snorkel hire this made it even better. Overall great staff, great food (thanks apelosi) and good accommodation and we even got upgraded for free.

I stayed at the funky fish for 3 weeks from February to March 2012. I chose the resort because I wanted to surf and boy was I happy!
I elected to stay in the dorms and got an upgrade to a private room. The dorms and the private room were basic, but very clean. The resort was very quiet at the time I was there as they had only just recently reopened under new management. The staff, most of it old staff from previous resort, was fantastic and friendly and really made my stay. The thoughtfulness and kindness were one of the highlights of my stay.
Only negatives: at first the food portions were a bit small, however new management changed it and the servings were very large! Enough to satisfy the appetite of this hungry surfer. My only tip to the chef would be to offer more healthy options at meal times and a little less fried food, but on the whole the food was really really good!

Now to the highlight of the stay: the surfing! If you elect the funky fish you are a 20 minute boat ride away from Namotu lefts and Wilkes' (Namotu is suitable for intermediate surfers, Wilkes' is a fast wave that breaks ona shallow reef) and 25 minutes from Cloudbreak. Need I say more? I would advise this resort to young people that want to experience Fijian kindness and especially surfers on a budget. The private Bures looked very nice inside. The dorm was a lot nicer than I expected and on par with dorms of other hostels around the world.

The beach is not the most beautiful in Fiji, but the staff really makes up for it by organizing outings to other beaches and by being so kind.

Room Tip: bring mosquito repellent!!! Lots of it!
